6 TANANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Sonvay, July 6—6 P. M. ‘Tne week just clesed has been a fortunate one for boiders of certara stocks, but only in case they have re- alized. The adjournment of the board on Thursday last over to Monday, interrupted operations materially, but did mot seom to reduce prices. Yesterday the street brokers were in full feather., and they made desperate efforts to rule the market. They bid freely for nearly every stock on the list, but no one seemed disposed to ac- ceptany of the offers made so liberally, and operations ‘Were, therefore, not at allactive. Erie closed steady at 64 per cent, but other stocks were without material alteration. We bave no change to report im money mat- ters. The exportation of specie yesterday by the steam- ship Atlantic was larger than anticipated, and much larger than usual by that line. The supply of money is equal to the demand, but there are slight indications of @ more active inquiry. The impression is that the banks will not show much change in their next week's returns st 23 gskses ss stati ssesesetsss | ‘Total for the week. $880,871 40 Previousiy reported $16,245,018 87 Motel, 1856...........00000 008 seve eee+$17,226,790 27 ‘The Conard steamer from this port on Wednesday next, ‘Will take out upwards of one and a half million of dollars ta specie. The imports begin to come in largely. Last ‘week they amounted to nearly five milion at this port, ‘with a limited export. We shail have, without a doubt, ‘am itmmense importation during the approaching fall sea- soa. ‘The steamship Baltic, at this port from Liverpool, brings four days’ later intelligence. Her advices are not impor- tant. Money continued easy. Consols were quoted about one-eighth of one per cent better. The arrivals of gold ia London bad been unusually large, and the next bank returns will probably show a great increase in bul- lion. In cotton there had been no change of consequence, either in prices or demand. Breadstufls had ad- Yanced. The weather was not so favorable for the harvests. The rapid rise in prices slightly checked business. It was anticlpated in financial circles Of London, that as soon as the instalments on the new joan wore paid up money would be much easier, and hat a great impetus would be given to business in al! the staple articies of trade. It was the impression that the restoration of public confidence, by the satisfactory ad- justmeat of the political difficulties between the United States and Great Britain, would make all kinds of trade more active, and draw money from stock investinents to ‘engage in commercial transactions. A revival of business ‘will have the same effect on this side of the Atlantic, A. H. Nicolay will hold his regular sale of stocks and bonds in the Merchants’ Exchange, on Monday, at 12}, o'clock. ‘ The New York Central Railroad Company have adver- tised for a new loan of $500,000. Proposals will be re cetved until the 17th of July, and payment must be made a or before the Ist of August. In the last annual re- port of this company the funded debt was put down at $14,462,742. The balf million now required will make the aggregate about $15,000,000. This, with the capital stock, $24,150,000, makes a grand total of $39,000,000. A portion of the loan advertised for is in eur Opinion re- quiced for the payment of the August dividend. There is very little doubt of it. It is well known that the net earn- ings of the New York Central have reached their mazi- mum—that its passenger business shows no increase, and that its greatest gross revenne is from freighting, which 45 vot at all profitable. In September last, when we ex- posed £0 thoroughly the rotenness of the New York tral Rairoad Company, we made the following predic- von: — We know it to be a fixed fact, and the managers know too, = ws ag oory met ne ry Ss = w com cr to ace imcrease its debt by @ Stale ae ian of Oeine? We know that this imerease Of gross receipts for the last two years ts owing entirely to freights carried under cost, and that in conse- quence of rival routes, the enlargement of the Erie Canal wndother causes, the net income isnot iu future to in- erease. Tn leas than ten months from the publication of the sbove, the truth of it ie fully verified. In lees than tea (months f-om the date of the Company's last annual report proposals are issued for a pew loan of half « million of dol- Rate, and partics taking the loan are required to pay it into ‘the Company's treasury on the very day the next semi- enaual dividend is due. The past winter was very severe wpen all raiiroads, and the New York Centra! suffered its (ull share. During the second quarter of the prevent fiscal year we doubt if the road paid its operating expenses. It is the intention of the company tw issue T per cent bonds for the sum of $1,947,815 72, which, added, te the present debt and stock, will make an aggregate of $41,000,000. ‘The @ve huadred thousand now proposed for is part of the $1,947,815 72. The balance will be issued as required. ‘This is but the beginning of a now series. This company has for years paid dividends beyond its net earnings, and the deficiency can only be provided for by new loans, ‘The managers can no longer dieguise the bankruptcy and rotteaness of the concern. ‘The groas receipts of the La Crosse and Milwaukie Rail road Company, ia each of the first six months of the pre- sont yoar, were as follows — La Crowe ap Minwarkre Rarnoap. Total _ — aie, 1866 test $190,579 16 ‘The increase from month to meth is most extraordi Gary, as Ht is Over the same length of road. The road ts operated only #ixty one miles, upon a cost for coustric tion Of about one million six bendred thoneand dollare ‘The receipt: for the remaining *ix months of the year wil! beyond a doubt average more than Gfty thousand dollars per month, which would give an aggregate of $500,000. ‘Those who know the road, and the country through which ft passes, beat, say the gross earnings for the year will ox ceed $600,000, or more than one third of the constrac!.ou Cost. The gross income would be equal to thirty por coat net on the present capital stock.
