A inside at the narrow halls and stairs, with a view ‘@ the nearly total absence of opportunity of ventilation, showed it to be, in point of construction, one of the worst clave of tevant houses in the city, The rooms were all Aled, even to marly cuifocation. It comprised a piain tour story modern building, in the rear of No. 42 Ridge street, eccuipied by colored people. A staiworth uegro, of darkestebony hue, was scouring ab old musket, declared himself bound fer Kansas, and asked that some member of the com- mittee would furnish him with a rite. The leading feature connected with the premises was a policy shop kept at the side of the alley way leading to the build- Ing. None of them wore adie to tell ef extracruinary juck in making “ hits,’? but they were all looking very hopefully fora “ ‘good turn” 4 eome, One woman, more frank than the majority, eonfessed that during the past two years sh» had svent ix ehillings where she had -drawn one—but she said it wasilike whiskey to the Irishman—she could not let it alone. She said that colored people were a smail portion ef the patrous of the shop. She had known those who fad pawned every article they had to venture is in buy- ‘tog lottery policies, and as a resuit, had been turned into the streets because they could not pay their rent.
