The New England Emigrant Ald Company heli their enous) meeting in this city this afternoon. There was a Jerge attendance. ‘The report of the directors speake of recent events in Kanrae—the reported cestruction of Lawrence amd peril of the'r agent, Gen. Pomeroy. The total recsip's for the year have’ been $67,184, They bave sawmills in various parts of the Territory. The company hold their Sand in Topeke and Lawrence by Vegal title, ard cannot be dispossessed. The statement was made that the handsomes: stores in Lawrence were owned by Missourianr. ‘Fhe emigration frem New England to Kansas, the pre- vent epring, has not been very large--say from 400 to 500 persons; but from Obio and the other Western States it hae been quite ex'ensive, More free S:ate emigrants have gone from the Southern and Western States this season, than all the emigeante from New England. ‘It was stated that Mis. Robinson bad started on her yeturm to ber husband, ssying that she was determined to be near bim during the p:esent crisis. It was prop:sed to form aid societies to retieva the wan's of the people of Lawrence, an3 it was auzoancsd that M:. Orce, cf Hartford, hai sabiorided $1,000 for that purpore. It was recommerded by Mr. £11 Tuaver, that these ald wocieties be formed altogether independent of the con pany, allover New Eoglan¢, to farnish no! only supplies to the enffering, but the means to send forward those wh) are willing to go to Kangas, but have not the meaus, ting was apnownced for to-morroy to obtain sub- scriptions for this purpose. Slavery wnd the New England Branch Ame Fican Traet Society. Boerow, May 27, 1858, At a meeting cf the New England American Branch fract Society to-day, atter an earnest and interesting ciseuraion, Rey. A. L. Stone was elected on the Execu tive Committee, in plase of the Rev. Nehemia Adams, author of the ‘South Side View of Slavery.’ Mr. Stone received 66 votes, ani Mr. Aiams 43. Tne opposition to his re-eleetion was, that New Eogland should no: be re presented fn a nacional rosiety by @ person holding the views of slavery attributed to Dr. Adams. ‘The Natfonal Abolition and New York Black Republican Conventiens. Syracuse, May 27, 1858. The New York Black Republican State Convention and the National Abolition Convention will assenble here to- morrow for the purpose of appointing delegates to the National Nominating Convention, which mee‘s in Phila- delphia on the 17th gf Juze, The delegates have not all arrived yet, and, juiging from present appearanc:#, the representation at either of these bodies will not be very full. ‘The abolitionists do not come in strong force; bat, as one of them raid, “ If it it not great in numbers, it will ve strong in principles.” Their choise for Presidential eandidate is, I understand, Gerri t Smith, (white man), and for Viee President, Frederick Dong'ass, (eclored). The platform which the Convention intend to sdopt will resemble, in many partisulars, that of the Diack republicans. There will be a rcattering series of reeolutions upon the present state of things in Kansae, end the free State men are to be ea- couraged to fgbt till the ‘last armed foe expires,” &>, Upon the agsault on Mr. Sumner there will be more reso- Jations equally strong, and expressive of their determi- pation to put a stop to what they call the spirit of slavery aggrersion. The black republicans sey they are unanimous on the objects for which the Conveniion is ealied, and that they will stand by the platform adopted in the address at the Pitteburg Convention. The majority of delegates are said to be in favor of Seward for their Presidential can Gidate, and will so instruct the delegates to be appointed ‘w the Nations] Convention. Col. Fremont, however, has strong friends, who determiced to contest his claims to the last. Seward’s partisans are wiliing to compromise matters by cffering him the nomination for Vise Presi- dent; tut it will be refused with indignation. Chase, of Otio, is sp.ken of ass nominee for the Presidency, and Sumnes is regarded au one of the strongest c'aimanta be- fore the Convention. There will bes number of resolu- tions devoted to him; and, on account of the fund of sympatby created fur him by the personal asssult of Brooke, he may receive the nomination, lt is hardly probable that be will, however. Tae political capita! created by public sympathy, real or supposed, for a broken head, is not of a very reliable cherac The “knowing ones,’ at least, are too shrewd to think it will Iast till the Preridential election, and so Samner’s chances, after all, are rather poor, The Pittsburg platform will be som what modified, but will suffer little or no change in what principles it possesses. The destruction of the towa of Lawrence is to rezeive marked notice, and upon the ex - pediency or policy of resommendidg the free State mea to fight it out there will, it is expected, bes warm dis cussion. On this point, however, the aboli ionists wil! be ahead of them; but, as Lewis Tappan told me, the Diack republicans, although not quite up to thelr stan- Gard, soon will be, and afvera little while may stan upon their platform, ‘There fea rort of brotherly fesling exlsting between them, already, and the fact of their having ehosen the sam: town to hold their conventions in, {s looked upon by the sanguine of both sections as suspicious of an early union. Im fact, the black repubtioans are already ro- garded by the abolitionists as favorable to their prin- ciples. ‘There was a caucus of the biack republican delegates this evening, and rumors afloat that there is a divis- jon among them upon the question of candidate aud the appointment of delegates to the Presidential Convention, Some are in favor of having a committee of thirty.:wo appointed to recommend delegates, while others de- sire to leave it to the voters ia each Congress. fonal district. Joseph Biunt was Caairman of the meetirg. The following are spoken of, and will probs bly be sppointed delegates at laxge:—Rodert Emmet and Moses H. Grinnell, of New York; Georgs W. Patterson and Judge Addison Gardner, from the western part of the State; Phillip Doreheimer, of Buffalo, and A, B. Olta, of Troy. Norroik, Va , May 27, 1856. Off Norfolk, at about 1 o’slock Monday morning, the steamer Keystone State, from Savannah for Philadelphis, eame into collision with the bark Cavalier, from Balti- more, bound to Rio. Both vessels were serlously injured. The steamer had her bow atove, and commenced making water rapidly. She roon freed herself from the bark, and made for Norfolk, where she arrived, and was run on the flats to prevent her sinking. While the veesels were ia contact, the first and second mates and three sailors, belorging to the bark got on board the steamer. The bark was atruck opposite thé foremast, and crushed so as to prevent her reaching port. The captain called for help, but the fficers of ihe steamer were not willing to risk the safety of allin endeavoring to save him. The steamer had e nsrrow escape. The water, at one time, was within three Inches of the fires. The passengers were all rafely landed, and most of them have proceeded on to Baltimore, Death of Hon. Roderick White.
