De Coppe! & Oo., prepared for trapsmission to Europe by the steamship Africa, gives the following review of the stock market for the past week :— State stocks have been generally very quiet, excepting Virgina @s; whtewhtave coslined og pos cent, ‘and’ anoee sulr.y Missouri 6’s, in which large transactions ve taken piace at a fractional advance. In other State stocks business bas been very limited. In city bonds, the buries 13 very light, the demand betng only for small amounts. Im covaty bonds there have been some purchases of St. Louis 64, Bata (Kontucky) 0s, Devmoines (Iowa) 8, aud Henry (Iowa) 18 per ceat, the latter of which bave but recently been introduced in our market. In railroad bonds considerable transactions have taken place bs im JUinois Central Construction st main. ‘tained rates. Buricess bas been moderate in Erie second mortgege, in Erie 7’s 1871-75, and also in Hudson river third mortgege, without material variations in rates. We notice some business in New York Central 6’s and ‘7's, the latter ata rise of 1 pe: cont. The ‘“subdseri, tion” bonds of the company remain wi:hout inquiry. private sale there have been sales of Milwaukie and Mie eissippl, 34 section, at some reduction in rates; other- wire there haa teen but little doing. Railroad Stocks—The speculative movement in Cleve- lard and Toledo has continued on s large scale, closing with a decline of 3% per cent on our last quotations. There bas been some animation in Erie, New York Central and Ceveland and Pitteburg, the latter especially, at a considerable rise. Reading was quite ac ive; to » sudden zine sucoveded an equally sbrapt dec] ne ‘A reduction in the freight of ccal occasioned depression. Illinots Central was ip good demand and meets par. She brings dates to the 19:h inst., inclusiva, from London. No change is reported in quotations for consola, The money market continued stringent, and the rate of interest without alteration. A relaxation in discount rates is locked for at no distant day. The pros- pect of large arrivals of specie aifords » good deal of hope for future ease and abundance in money matters. The last returns of the Bank of England show an increase in the amount of buliion of £42,562. In relation to Ameri- can securities, Satterthwaite’s circular says: — We have hada quiet market in Amoricdh securities to Lonaon during the past week. We note, however, trans- actions to some extent in llinois Central Free Land nd bonds, at advanced rates. The Construo ion ponds are sellers a the price of 80, with a siack inquiry. [ne non-payment of the in- terest om the Chicago and Missiseippi (some of the bonds of which road were negotiated here) has an unfavorable influence as regarcs the introductioa of finished roacs. Some of the bonds of t St. Joreph’s have found their way here, but we have not heard ot eny sales. Canacian securities are in strong de- ad, at advanced rates, and oer home macket ts fisoded with » host of new schemss, and the like disposivion is manifested in all the continental markets, which causes a very active demand for money, here and elaewaere, at high rates. The cotton market is quoted frm. An advance had been realized, but it could not be sus‘ained. From the macutecturirg districts the accounts are favorable. In breadstuffs there wae considerable depression. All the leading articles bad ceclined, and tbe demand was only mederate for consumption. A further reduction tn mar- ket value of some importance was looked for. Cheap food will give greater impetus to all branches of industry, and the impression appeared to be general in the public mind on the other side that « period of prospesity was pear at hand equal to anything that had been known for mony years, It will take scme little time to get matters gettled down once more upon ® substantial peace basis, fand recover from the derangement caused by the wa: but a4 sooo as & proper order of things is again & as- lished, we shall see @ more rapid pregress in all the «le. ments of individual prosperity aad national wealth -han ever before known.
