FINANOIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MOREY MARKBE?. Weowmemat, April 23—6 P. M. The stoek market continues active, but prices appear to be generally decreasing. There were sales of Milwaukie and Mississippi at 83 a 83%{ per cent cash, and 85, buyer sixty days. New York Central, Erie, and Gleveland and Toledo were the leading stocks on the mar- ket to-day. Michigan Southern was firm at the ed- vance, with very small sales. Galena and Chicago opened at 1153¢, and closed at 1133, per cent, with the sale of only fifiy shares. There was moderate movement to- day in Nicaragua Transit, It told as bigh as 14% per cent, buyer sixty days. Reading was very dull this morning. Two small small lots were sold at yesterday's prices. ‘At the second board the market was moderately active, and more buoyant. Galenaand Chicago advanced per cent; Reading Railroad, 34; Erie Railroad, };; Cleveland and Toledo, 3;. The market is ins very sound, healthy state, It is utterly impossible to get any of the leading stocks down much. Money is easy, and amy amount can be raised to carry good securities. The bears are daily getting Ceeper and deeper into the mire, and if they do not get out between this and the first of June, it will be a Gifficult matter for them to do so with out serious lorses. The bears bave suffered some lately. ‘The market has for come weeks been gradually appre- ciating. The apprcaching summer bids fair to be a good time for the bulls, and those whopave looked far enough abead have already fortified themselves with good lines of all the leading securities. The banks must soon turn their attention more to loans on stock, in the absence of demand from other sources, and that will givea great impetus to speculation. On the lst of Jane seven and a haif millions of specie comes out of the Sub Treasury. Most of that large sum will go into the banks, and thus form « broader basis for an expantion. A. H.
