It has always been a matter of surprise, and the ques- tion is often asked, “Why do not some of our American e@spitalists build a first class hotel at Havana?” Per- hape there 1s no place upon the American continent where hotel accommodations are more needed, or where a fertane could be more easily or readily realized. About the time of Jeany Lind’s visit to Havana, some five years ago, Messrs. Monot & Howard, of this city, and Golonel Mucge, of New Orleana, (the latter several times, ) visited Havana with a view of ascertainirg if the governg ment would give permission, and if the necessary facili- tes and aceommodations could be had for building a hetel, At the time, and until quite recently, the frequent wos of the filibusters from the American side alarmed the government too much to permit, or even en- tertain the idea of allowing the Yankees any foothold on ‘the island. New steamship lines, the increasing travel between the United States and Havana—which, by the by, is always of the first class—these and other conriderations have in- duced several attempts by parties sinye, to obtain per- mission te build a hotel at Havana, but their efforts have always been met by the imposition of so many restric- tiens and petty atmoyances on the part of the govern ment as to virtually amount to prohibition. Captain Acker, oft ‘the Saint Nicholas Hctel, who has just returned from Havana, says, that General Concha ‘hss given permission to Messrs. Treadwell, Acker & Co. to buila slowed pine of # hotel they please, ‘and that they be : sare tae own bi sop sey provisions and everythi construc carrying on @ hotel after eeeonrpiated free ot duty.
