Their performanoes on Monday evea- ing were well received. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Tugspay, March 25—6 P. M. We have no change of consequence to report in the stock market. The most active stock on the Uist to-day was Cleveland and Toledo, and the transac- tions were about equally divided between buyer's and seller's option. Erie was a fraction better than at e close yesterday, but below prices current at the first board. Chicago and Rock Island remained without change. The announcement of the dividend put the stock up 1 per cent, but it does not seem to have had the effect contemplated. Galena and Chicago was firm to-day at 113¢ per cent, with a small sale. It is not an easy matter to buy much of this stock. Several attempts have been made lately to purchase a few hundred shares, but the market price advanced so rapidly that the movement was abandoned. The stock is good for 120 to 125 per cent between this and dividend day. Read ing Railroad was better to-day. The read brought down last week 29,100 tons of coal, making an ag- gregate of 340,679 tons, against 417,898 tons to the same date last year. The cause of this decrease is the deep snows in the coal regions. The lateral woads cannot be worked; and then the fact that coal cannot get away from Richmond on account of the ice, prevents coal from being sent down. As soon as navigation opens, the road will make up the present deficiency in tonnage. Nicaragua Transit has become inactive, and remains pretty firm at 15 per cent. The Walker-Garrison-Morgan-Randolph Company have advertised the Orizaba to leave this port for Punta Arenas on the 10th of April. This steamer has been for some years past engaged in the Gulf trade, and belongs to Charles Morgan. She has been made over at the Custom House to Charles A. Whitney, Morgan's son-in-law, who acts as agent of the company. Arrangements were made some time ago—long before it was known here that Walker intended annulling the Transit Com- pany’s charter—for the steamers of the mew company to coal at Key West, and all the ar- rangements which are now being carried out were reported to us some time previous to the arrival of the Northern Light. The information came to us from what has since proved to be an official source; Dut we looked upon it then as a stockjobbing affair, and supposed it to be merely a ruse to depress the market value of Transit stock. It appears now that there was more in it than was generally anticipated; that while these arrangements were being made, ne- gotiations were going on in Nicaragua for the annul- ment of the Transit Company's charter, and that the parties engaged in both operations were the game. We have as yet had but the first chapter in this history. It is to be continued. After the adjournment of the Board, the following gales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by Simeon Draper :— 000 Lake Erie, Wabash &S% Louis RR. 1st mort. ne ol 70 62 52 58 100 shares Paterson’& Ramap> 3 50 Farmers’ Loan and Trust Co.. 67 100 North Ameriean frust and Ba 8 50 Branawick City Stock....°** 5% 16 Beekman Fire Insurarce Co.. 101 200 New Engiand Mining and Quarrying 8 At the second board the market was buoyant, and -there was considerable activity. We have no ad- vance in prices to quote, but the highest rates cur- rent at the first board ruled at the close. Michigan Southern Railroad was in demand at a small im provement. Cleveland and Toledo went ap j per cent. After the board the market was very firm, with * strong upward tendency. Galena and Chicago, \'4} bid, 115 asked; Michigan Southern, 95} bid, 96 asked; Cleveland and Toledo, 78} bid, 78 asked: Milwaukie and Mississippi, 84f bid, 85 asked, firm; Reading, 92) bid, 924 asked; Nicaragua, 15 bid, 15} asked; Illinois Central Bonds, 914 bid, 91} asked. ‘The market can be considered a rising one. Money is easier, and we should not be surprised to seea pretty general upward movement in all the leading stocks. It may be only temporary. We do not look fora permanent rise before May. Then the bears must be prepared for an inflation. The usual spring speculation cannot come before that tim § It may not be, when it comes, so great as is gene- rally anticipated, but we do not look for the appear- ance of outsiders in the market, until the bulk of the spring business is over. th. Tos city represented as in a highly prosperous condition, this ia a most cisereditabls circum stanceand is calculated to act with prejudicial effect npon the securities of the new Western cities and towns now #0 rapidly developing. For the credit of Janes- vi'le we hope this failure to meet ita obligations is but temporary. The Chemical Bank has declared a semi-annual dividend of six per cent. ‘Western railroad companies have had a hard time of it for some months past. With the deep snows and cold weather, very few of them have made money. Although they have in fact earned nothing, they are much better off than the railroads of the East, where they have all been losing money. Great apprehensions are felt regarding freahets, and roads in this State and in Ohio are preparing for serious damages. Bridges have been strengthened, and da- plicates, as far as possible, prepared. A warm rain of two or three days would do vast damage to our railroads. The month of April will, beyond adoubt, be a severe one to these works in this State and New England. The beavy snows of the North have hard $09,276 50 64,313 00 4230 39 NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1856. ly yet been affected by the sun, and as the season advances the dager of s rapid greater, It is now tht 25th of must soon have the usual spring ra'ng: When they come, railroad managers most |.ok ont for their tracks and bridges. In the event of serious freshets the damage to the road bed, &c., will not be the onlydifficulty. Travel and traffic will be interrupted; and while the expenditures are likely to be of an ex- traordinary character, the earnings are likely to be limited. Thus far this month the receipts have been small, even below those of February, and the aggregate is likely to be much behind that of the same month last year. Throughout this State, Ohio, and all the Eastern States, the snow is piled up along side the tracks, in places nearly as high as the cars, and fences in every direction are completely covered. This immense body of snow cannot pass away harmlessly. It is too late in the season to ex- pect such a favorable termination of the winter, and it is best to be prepared for the worst. The past winter has been a hard one on our railroads from the inten- sity of the cold. The cost of repairs this year, if properly reported, will be a big item in the expen- ditures. Locomotives have suffered more than ever before known in the same time, and the limited business since the mild weather commenced’ has on one account been advantageous, as it gave the com- panies an opportunity to repair their rolling stock and get it in order for the summer business, In the whole history of railroads in this country, nothing in the shape of bad weather has ever been known like the past three months. Very few companies will beab to pay dividends for the last six months out of 2, rugs. Dividends may be paid at the regular day, bu. only by borrowing money and an- ticipating future receipts. The Toledo Blade gives the followlng informa- tion regarding the progress of the Toledo, Lake Erie and Wabash Railroad:— This great thoroughfare was completed to Logansport on Saturday last. Few works of internal improvement, in this or apy other country, have ever progressed towards 8 completion with greater rapidity—a tact partially origi nating in the importance ot the improvement itself, as well ina commercia! ag 8 pecuniary point of view. It feems but yesterday since our citizens fire! began to agi- tate che subject of sucha work as this, unui now the thing is more than half finished. In another year werhall be im éaily direct connection with St. Louls, and ia another, perhaps, with the half way station between that city and the Pacific. What an ago is ours ! We are happy to be abie to state that in its unGni:-hed condition the Wabash and Erie road has more than realized the expectations of ite builders, and that the work will be purhed onward with an energy commensa- ra‘e with i's importance. The travel is now large and daily incressing, and the sompary already begin to enjxy & foretaste of the rich reward which the future holds in store for them. Stock .
