8 THE MATSECL INVESTIGATION. ‘The examination into the nativity of the Chief of Police was resumed yesterday in the Mayor's office. before the Police Commiasioners. The room was crowded, as usual, and the Mayor, Recorder, and City Judge took their seate at four o’clo:k, when Mr. Mrady called the first witness for the defence. John MeKibb n sworn—I know the Chief of Po- tice; 1 proposed him as member of a Freemason’s lodge; 1 think this was in the year 1535; the name ofthe lodge was York Lodge—the same to which H, ©. Atwood belonged; I don't remember that I stated his birthplace in proposing him; Mr. Matsell never told me he was born in England; I never said he was born in Engiand, to anybody. Samuel Smith sworn--I reside in Witliamsbarg; 1 knew the mother of the Chief; I became acqnaint- ed with her eight or uine years ago; I was well ac- quainted with her; sbe lived with the Chief, and died there; she used to tell me where her children were born; she said some of her children were born on the east side of the town and some in Broadway; George, she said, wus born ia Banker street, or | Cherry street, or somewhere on the east side of the town. Foster, M. D., has resigned the charge of St. Paul’s church, Evansville, Indiana. DEATHS IN TRE MINISTRY. Rey. Dr. McGill, for many years pastor of St. Paul’s (Scotch Presbyterian) church in Montreal, died in that city on the 4th inst. Rey. James Logan died in Shelby county, Ky., on the lst ult., aged 56 years. Rey. 8. W. Westbrook, of the North Carolina Con- ference, died at Greenboro’, N. C., on the 28th ult. Died, on Tuesday, February 5, at Bast Haven, Conn., Rey. Stephen Dod, a venerable native of New Jersey. He was born March 8, 1777, at bees (now Bloomtield,) and descended from Daniel Dod, one of the first eettlers of Newark. He graduated at Union College, Schenectady ; was ordained to the Gospel ‘ministry September 28, 1803, and sup- ied two congregations for seven years in Carmel, Putohess county, N. Y. From October, 1810, to May, 1817, he was pastor of a church in heb Conn., and December, 10, 1817, became pastor of the Congregational church at East Haven, where he ministered until bis resignation a few years since, 1 consequence of advancing age.
