NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, FEBRUARY. 4, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET, Suppay, Fob. 3—6 P. M. The stock market closed yesterday firm at our quotations. The spirited movement realized on the reception of the foreign news became 8 little sub- dued, and operators were content to wait the arri- val of the Arabia’s mails The sales of stocks on Friday and Saturday were unusually heavy, the bulk of which was at prices ranging, on an average, full One per cent above those rreviously current. We have not yet seen the effect of this European intelll gence on outside operators. it cannot be otherwise than favorable. Previous to the arrival of the Arabia there was a growing disposition to hold stocks for the opening of the spring business, Independent of the feeling created by the improving prospects of peace, there was a growing confidence im the future, based entirely upon our looal pros- perity, which would have become, unaided by any foreign influences of a favorable character, sufficiently strong to have given an important up- ward impetus to prices. The probabilities of peace will do much towards strengthening and consolidat- ing this speculative spirit, and give it activity atan earlier day. Our domestic finances are in sucha healthy condition, and trade is likely to be so remn- nerating, thatthe means for temporary or perma- nent investment in the prominent stock securities of the day are at present abundant, and likely to in- crease with great rapidity. There must be, before ‘tke expiration of another six months, a vast accu- mulation of capital in the hands of the commercial claases. A portion of this capital will be, for atime, employed in stock speculation, and a portion will be placed in the best class of securities for investment. We have not looked for a very active movement in the market for some weeks, but if future arri- vals from Evrope confirm the advices just re- ceived, and the probabilities of peace become stronger, activity may be realized much sooner, and prices expand more rapidly than we have anticipat- ed. The fature is full of promise and, we hope, of peace. The exportation of specie continues limited. Since the active exportation ceased last year we have added several millions to our domestic supply. ‘Saurmans OF SPEcis FROM THE PoRT OY sa! Yor. Ship Samuel Russell, American gold.. . $1 Sebr. J. We are opposed to the Michigan Southern Com- pany lensing amy branch road, and guarantecing eight per cent per annum on its cost. We do not like to see the directors in a railroad company en- tering into s contract in their individual capacity, to build a line, and then turning round andin their official capacity leasing it from or to themselves at ahigh rate per annum. It does not look well, and it is not right; bat if the road cannot be built in any other way, it may be best to quietly submit to the plan proposed, for 1ta immediate completion is of the utmost importance. When this connecting link is finished, the distance between Detroit and Chicago will be 7 miles less, via the Michigan Soath- ern road, and the line between these points ab-ut one hour shorter than by the Michigan Central line. This will secure all the through Western travel that may desire to take the Suspension Bridge route, and ‘add largely to the income of the Southern line. We agree, perfectly, with the management in all they say of the importance of this new line, and trust its construction will not long be delayed, even upon the plan proposed, if one more just and equitable can- not be agreed upon. It is estimated that the com- pletion of the Goshen line and the connection with Detroit will add one million of dollars, the first year, to the gross earnings of the Michigan Southern Railroad Company. We have no doubt but that the first year after these lines are completed, the Michi" gan Southern Company will earn four million of dollars. The Goshen, or direct line, so shortens ard straightens the distance between Toledo and Chi- cago, that it must be the great highway, both for passengers and freight, between the southern end of Lake Michigan and the western end of Lake Erie. Nothing can compete with a route so level and so direct, and the stockholders are looking forward with a good deal of interest to the opening of that connection. The State Treasurer of New Jersey reports that the receipts of the treasury for the year 1855 were $221,- 263 61. The disbursements were: ordinary, $123,- 021 27; extraordinary, $95,119 06; total, $221,140 32, leaving a balance in the treasury of $113 20. A spe- cial loan of $30,000 has been made during the year, which, together with the loans of 1846 and 1852, makes the indebtedness of the State $95,000. The State holds available assets amounting to $252,112 12, The receipts of the treasury for 1856 are estimated at $171,736 60. The receipts of the school fund were $71,701 12, and the disbursements $70,333 25. The school fund invested is $412,150 08, being an increase of $10,845 75, as compared with the pre- vious year. This is the most active season of the year for im- ports, and the most inactive for exports. Foreign manufactures for the spring trade generally arrive during January and February. The suspension of internal navigation, and the obstructions usually ex- perienced in the middle of the winter to outside navigation, serve to limit shipping operations and keep down the export trade. This season we h:ve had more difficulties to contend against than usual, but we trust they will soon disappear. As the sec- son advances and the weather becomes milder, our railroads will operate more regularly, and our re- ceipts of produce from the interior be in greater volume. 1000 Tenn 6's 160 0, 4060 City 578 70... $000 Him Ist mtg be 1000 Erie Be '76 ex in 1000 H B 2a mg ba.c 1009 HR 3d mtg bis 20000 Li CRR 8 priv 2000 TH & A 2d m ba 20 chs Bk N Amesica = 100 Canton Co...... 200 . 310 Cumb Coal 200 do. 300 do 200 do WON Y Cen 50 do $0000 Virginia 6” 5000 Tl C RR be. 50 aba Cum Coal i Jot 10 Civ, C Wen: 200 Faie RR 3600 — were Sot hos Fv nsnee peTUFs.—Flour—The market notleed, but at the close witha eaging the current reduction in prices.
