FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY BY MaRKES. Weovespay Jan. 23—6 P.M. ‘The stook market opened dat tnis morning. Transac- ons wore limited, and privcipal'y on tims. At the first board Hudson Railroad adv.noed % per cont; Michigan Comteal, 4¢; Chicago and Kock Isiand, %. New York Con- tral Railroad declined per cent; Milwaukie and Missis- elppt, $<; Galema and Chiceg», ; Michigan Southern, | Reading, 5. Erie, Cumberiaud aud Nicuragus Transit opea- edand closed steady. Of the latter class of ratirosd stock ‘the sales wore quite smail. Railroad bonds continue im moderate demand, and the supp'y is oquaily moderate at prestat prices, This class of securities is heli generally above current rates, and m:thing short of an important fanprevement would bring out many. The European in- twlligence received by the steamehtp Africs at tais port from Liverpool, is three days later thio previous dates, ‘The pews ia of trifling importance, icancially, commer- cially and politically. Witne siignt dvoline ta console, we have an easier money market in Lond vm; with a Itmit” ed amonnt of business in the co‘ton market, prices re- meimtd unchanged; with ovxsicerabie activity in bread etuils, we havea slight improvement in prices. The finan- « 1a} advices are not very favorable. A sew loan is talked of ‘in Rog'and; but {t is said Fraace o1i) not require another toan for some time. The Loudon Chronicle says:— The sixteen million loan bes sil been reseived. We ere corry to add it basal: beeu spent, and nearly four milliops over and azove, which, with the addicional amount of expecditure ab Ve imcvwe trat may pec! ed during the quarter on which w. have now eate: must be provided for out of the wav: sn% metas of the ensuing year. The expeadi ure fur ths quarter nes brea ieee -four poe oras the race of ninoty-six millions @ year. The war is cos jug us, therefore, at the rate of nearly @fty milious » year. Bit i; cannot be seid that the war axstion has ‘pjarlously affected tae trade amd commerce of the country. Lhe money strain haa been severe, but it bas procuced m>crash, Our manufactures are extenoi' g—our cvmmeroe 19 not cri- plea. ‘Labor is not out of p:oportiou tu the demand, nor we wees been lowere". Enormoxs as the amoant of taxation is, the commerce aud resources of the country enable her to bear it without tpjurious ¢ msequences, There is no doubt put that the awount of the reported now loan is greatly exaggora'ed. Toe goverumant miy require the full amount o wd during the present year, ‘but its present wants are comparatively limited, By thia arrival we hear aothing ot apy extraordinary move- ment on the partof the Bent of Evgsad. The weekly returns are no later than those rec-ived by the previous ateamer, and there is row: g to our les sdout aa in crease in the rate of interest. T.e proba rle vause of the decline in consols is the fact that rum rs of peace have lost their force and effect. Tue +x-eusive prapara‘ions going cn in Rassia for a vigorous o-eaing and prossou- tion of w new campaign, have cissipsted all hopes of an | immediate amicable acjustmeat of any of the poiats at | inane, The Kondon Shipping and Mercanitle Gazetis of the even- | ing of the 8th inst. says:— ‘Toe French Minister of Finance be: raised the inte-est | on Treasury bocds ove per cent. The trustees of the late Rochester, Lockport and Ni- ogara Falls Railroad have deciared a dividend of one per cent rom the assets of the company, psyadle on demand, ‘The Pittsburg and Boston Mining Company have de- clared « remi-ennual dividend of $10 per share on 6,000 shares. The followi:g are the dividends paid regularly since they were commenced in 1819, by this prosperous eaine:— 1949, gin 1851. — 1863. noe see er Auguat.. 610" 7 oe The first dividend was paid in May, 1810, The above shows a total of $100 for seven years, which speaks weil for the ruccess of Lake Superior Copper Min- ing, in this eace certainly, and we also have the Minne- sota Mine even more successful thus far, while others will chow their hand in due time. ‘The report of the Boston and Worcester Railroad Com- pany for the year eading Nov. 20, 1856, shows the foliow- ing result :— Amouat of income... «+ «$1,098,004 Ot which (com passengers 620,185 height. 444,981 tan peices. 39,938 Working expenses 603/545, ‘Net income, after payingexpensesundinteress, — 390,254 —Inorease of working expemres for the year $9,014; yet the increase of net income is $149 122. The bonded and devt of the company is $655,428, and the assets $478,206, leaving « balance ot debo $177, 168. The amount reserved for ihe deprectatton of the vad beyond resales in $23,630, ana the reverved income is $111,781. There bas been a steady inosease in the tnoome of thy road, and conpled with ivan iccreese of expenses, in © nsequence of the inoreace? price of labor, fuel, &o, The former, the cirectors think, has reacbed ite maximam, whi’e toc latter will probably be met by a resort to coul, seke, As. The Buffalo and State Line Railroad Company earnet $116,882 in December, 1865, against $07,244 for the same month in 1854, showing an increase of $18,588. ‘The Governor of Wisconsia, in bis message to the Le- qislature, says that the whole amount paid iato the Treasury during the year, inclutiag the balance on hand at the commencement, was 629,340 99. The expenditures: of all kinds were $486,714 73, thus showing a aucpins of $12,526 26 onthe lst inst, The receipts into the Trea eury for current year are estimated at $412,476 54, and the expenditures of all kinds at $274,044 50. This shows an estimated surplas of $138,432 04 in the Treasury on the lat of Jacusry, 1857. From this the Governor draws the conclusion that the tax law of the last session of the Legtsiature imposes a greater burden than 1) necessary apon the people, and he intimates that it ought to be toe! modified. ‘The Chiriqul Improvement Company sre about com mencing operations on ita immense coal estate. A corps of engineers, surveyors, miners, &e., will leave in a few days for Boca det Toro, to enter upon active operations. The immonve deposits of coal on the company’s property muat work an entire revolution in that region, an‘ be of vast service to the rapidly insreas'ng steam marine of the Galf of Mexico. The coal found im such quantities, down to the very shores of the port, and on the islands in the Chiriqui Logoon, is particuiariy adapted to the consumption of steamships, and it is so favorab'y lo- cated, 60 cheaply mined, and 60 easily transported to the prineipal potnts of consumption, that a lance business, at iuzge profite, can be realized from the opening. Tae consumption of coal at the different ports of the Gulf, and at the porta in the Pacific connected with the rola trade, ia equel to nearly ten thousand tona per month the whole of which now has to be placed at those points at a heavy cat, Copsumption ov Coan at Tun Gurr P Ni iz Co., at nea) van, N, ¥. line, per month, tons. 0) a de. This will give them at the ports on this side # clear profit of $7 per tom, and on the o her side a profit of say $10 per ton. These Ggures would give the company an aggregate net income (or the first yoar of operations, as follows:— Total consumption at the Gulf porta, 4,900 tons, at tom profit........ Do. do, at Pacific’ porta, it inoume per month,..... Net income per annum ‘This ia a pretty fair exhibit for Scempeny with an ac- tual capital cf omly $1,000,000. But it is not at all ex- travegant, provided, ef course, that the supply 0! coai holds out, and the quality proves equal fo that reportei. The company have taken the proper steps to place beyond @ question these important matters. That an immense bedy of bituminous coal exists upon the property of the Chiriqui Improvement Company there can be no doubt, from the evidence already in the company’s possession, but more extensive exploration* are necessary to exab'e the company to commence operations at the most acces- sible point, with the least expendi ure. ‘The Milwaukie and Mississippi Railroad Company have made a contract tor ten more first class locomotives. The company is also negotisting for three hundred addi- ticnal freight cars. This increase of eyuipmont is pur- chased in anticipation of the early completion next sea- sen cf ibe read to the Mississippi river, of which there is now po doubt. It is estimated that by the lst of Febru- ary, 1856, nearly al the grading from Madison to the Mississippi river will be completed; at least eighty miles will then be ready for the superstructure, and the re_ waixing portion of the grading can be finished ia two or three months from thet time. The con‘ractors have now in Milwaukie twenty-three hundred tons of iron, sufficient to lay to Mazomanie, to which point they in- tend having the road completed very early in the spring. ‘The remaining portion of the iron to complete the entire road is contracted for, to be delivered in New York, ready for sbipment on cue first opening of the navigation in the spring.
