of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, | ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED BVERY DAY. for warehouse, and also the withdrawals from warehouse, ————oII ESI SSSS=S=—=" uring the week ending and including Thursday, Jan. 12,722 54 1,433 ——o 37,808 $161,113 304,801 950 $741,029 Value put on the market during the week. ..$3,024,251 Sinee the date ct our last report, the holidays have intervened, which checked transactions in dry goods, as ‘waual at this season of the year. The chief exceptions to ‘this pause in the trade wore found in scattering purchasers from the iterior, who had run short of supplies, and ‘were forced to exter the market to replenish their stocks. Upon the whole, however, the December sales wore in advance of those for the same period ofthe year pre- vious. The past year will stand dut as one remarkably successful in the dry goods trade. The trade was (es- pecially in the autumn months) distinguished by unu- suslactivity at improved prices and remunerative profits Withal, too, and what was still more satisfactory, the collections from the interior were unusual- ty good, and the failures few ani far be- tween. The trade has entered the new year with encouraging prospects for continued prosperity. Should the Eastern war terminate, and money continue abundant, with favorable crop prospects in the spring, we may anticipate another year of unusual activity, with some danger of carrying the trade to an undue and un- safe state of expansion. The late successful season has greatly stimulated tmportations both from England and the Continent. Each steamer from Havre was expected to bring valuable cargoes of French staple and fancy goods, the stocks of which were much reduced, while prices were enhanced. The healthy and prosperous con- dition of the trade has drawn an inereased amount of capital into its channtl:, and several new and respectable firms have been formed, with the intention of competing for » share of the business, In the meantime, job- Yers are busy with replenishing and arcanging their stocks for the opening trade of the new year. ‘Yhe export trade continues to a fair extent, and brown sheetirgs and shirtings are taken to a moderate extent for that purpose, at 7{c , while the stock is increasing. Bleached sheetings and shirtings were dull. For cotion duck the market was steady, and prices for bolts were unchanged. Drills ruled at about 73c. Corset jeans were in moderate demand at old prises. Printing cloths were firmer, with moderate sales. Prints of new styles were in better supply, but the market haa not yet open- ed. Inawns were abundant, and assortments extensive. Mourline de lsines have been active, for the season, and prices well sustained. The advancid season now rencers prices easier. Manufacturers are* sending in new styles of cassimeres and ratinets, suitable to the spring trade, ‘the market for which has not fully opened. Tweeds and Jeans were moderately dealt in, but at easier rates. Lin- ‘seys-are inactive, st 1e.a14c. i foreign goods the trantactions have been moderate, but at satisfactory prices. Recent importations are being distributed among jobbers, preparatory to the opening spriog trade, when prices will become better established, Exxchas aaa SATCODAY, Jan. 5, 1856. $1000 Virginia 6's... 927% 150 ahaNYGen Ri 40 91% YOOON Y 6% 758...:. 100°” 170 Cleve & Tol RR.. 73 {000 Ohio 66 °60...:1 10234 30 49......030 7834 4670 Ohio 6s "70 107 864 2660 Missourt (7a 8534 854 85.44 %6 wie 100% ieooHar Ist mgbds: tee % _ 2% Cleve, C joco Rrievaest 3, 4. 38Ga & Chic RR = ax 1€000 IM Cen RR bds. 2600 8134 750 Erie Raiiroad, 81 00 do. do. 2000 Ch & RIsRR bd 2000 T H & Alt 2d mb 20 shs Bank N Y. 90 Del & H Canal Co 118 86 Cora Exch Bank. i 90 Penn Coal Co 1 100 do. 10 N H & Hartf’d RR 0. 175 Mich S & N Ia RR 20......b60 233% 100 do. 200 Geld Hili Mine... —% 100 do. 91 200 do. ‘137N Y Central eo 100 15 do.
