After a tircsome search, » pillow covered with blood was hauled to the surface of the water. A bed was also fished up, but it bore no marks of gore. A light horse pistol was also brought up from the cabin, but when near the surface of the water it fell off the hook, and, siaking to the bottom of the bold, diseppesred from view. All efforts to grapple the bodies which, it is sup- posed, remain in the cabin, were ineffectual, althouga the boatmen say they touched and struck what they Dbelioved to be the forms of inanimate men. There wae an active disposition exhibited to roll. Fle opened at a decline, and ran down further to ‘the clove. Cumberland and Reading were run off in large lots, at lower prizes. The only stock on the list that im- proved was Nicaragua Transl, The prospoct of getting this concern out of the hauds of the present monagers is having @ favorablo effect upon the market value of the stock. There is very little doubt but that some impor- tant changes will be made. Whatever foandation there may be for the rumors relative to an amelgams‘ion of the Nicaragua and the Pacific companies, we know that the leeches which have for so many years had their hold upon the former will be choked off, and tho enormous suns which havé annually gone Into the peckes of presidents, agents, &e., will herea‘ter go into the pockets of the stockholiers. In the event of the com penies being amalgamated, or placed under one minage ment, oxe set of officers, one set of agents, and of oflices, will suffice for the management of ail, ond the Transit Company will be released from the nest of officials which are now turning every dollar into their own pockets. If the Transit Company could be faiily and honestly ms- raged the steck would be worth to-day double at least what it is selling for, If some change is not made it is dear at the market price, In relatfon to this company we esll attention to a communteation, following this arti- cle, which in rather pointed. The Misavis Content, Chicago and Rock Ilend, Michigan Central, Barlington and Quiney, and Galena and Chicago, all receive and pay ont George Smith's money, and three or four of them keep an account at bis bank. The far-seoing Journe) above alluded to wiil then revert to the warning which it Is now giving with no small degree of prite— and not till then. Our awiadie Albany offspring, notwithstanding ail of the above companies are acting precisely alike im regard to George Smith ourreney, slogies out, on the ples that “no injustice may be done to other Western railroads,” the Galena and Chicago a+ the great ofeaser That is not the motive st all, A little close examination will ciscover that the aim was presisely the aumo ay what it states, and the real motives simply this—to be revenged upon us for our exposure of the rascalities of the Albany New York Central Railroad clique. The jackal of the Albany lioas was unsble to deny the charges we brought sgainst its masters, and in desperste spite undertook to ite the aterm rod of justice held over it. Somsmore potent arms of defonce and offence must be devised. To refute our arguments or disprove our statements, were that possible, would indeed be a revenge. Wo cannot, however, be moved by slanders upon a company that we have seen Ait to hold up to the public merely as an exam- ple of a road msnaged upon correct business principles. Nor necd our contemporary, or its Albany prowpters, flatter themselyes that by such a ruse wo are to be di- verted, or that public attention ix to be diverted, from the doings of this Albany edition of the Camden and Am- boy political machine, Wo huve as yet but raised » cor- ner of the cloak that «kios and films the ulcerous sore. We know it to be ficwly engrafted upon tho body politie—deeply roated at its very hearts coro— wining and corrupting all that in fair in legislation, do- cent in morals or homest fn finance. itis a mighty mo- nied power, in the hands of an unscrupulous clique, aid- ed by 8 corrupted press, used for the purpose of control. ling the polities of the State, and of swindling the people IndividuaNly ana collectively out of their money. Not- withstanding its accumulation of sins, grown palpable and rank through years of indulgence, xt ia at thin very ony in the full tide of power and successful plunder. It is, nevertheless, our fixed and unalterable purpose to do battle upon the monster until he restrains himself with- im his legitimate limits, We fear not its hundred eyes, its hydra head or its suckling cub‘‘nearer home.’’ One and all we ore ready to meet, In plain terms, we intend to proceed with our exposure of the New York Central Railroad management, present and past, until the entire subject ard the individuals engaged in it are fully and perfectly appreciated by the public abroad as well as “nearer home,’’ ‘The Boston Journal of,,the 26th inst, sayas— As to the country banks whose bills have been refused by the Suffolk. it was snnounced at the time of refusal that the measures were compelied by the inability of the Grocers’, which had previously acted asx agent for them, to male the jomporesy: advances required to protect an aceicental over diaft for redemptioa. It is well knowa that most of the country banks in New England arrange with the various eity banks to redeem their circulation en fart as sent in from the Suffolk, keeping open accounts, which at some periods of the year show handsome balan: ces to their credit, while at others tho accounts are tein- | aghl overdrawn by @ more rapid return of ciroulation, it happened thet the Grocers’ was not in a condition to give this temporary eredit to the banks with whom they d kept such accounts, ani thas bills were discredited which, for all this proves’ to the contrary, may be as sound apy in New Engiaud. Had other hanks in State street ad opted the same rigorous policy towards the country banks of which they are agenta, wo fear that the number @f banks refused by the Sulfolk would have beew tearfully increased Juat at thia time. ‘This brief explana- tion will suffice to show the machinery of bank redemp- tion in State street, and the insuileien’ grounds of alaria in the accidental aud doubtiess temporary discredit of the banks alluded to. Taken throngh the your thee ae- counts a1@ doubtless profitable toour banks, and proba- bly show a hondsome average balsace on the eredit aide, and it does not foliow that the country banka are any less able to protect their issues, because the Grocers’ has been unable to extend a credit to which they wore doubt. Jens fairly emtivied. Already two of the banks mentioned have rewitted funds sutlicient to take eure of sheir biils, which arc again reseived at the Suffolk, and the others will no doubt respone as promp:ly.
