Considerable sensation has been prodaced in Boston by the conduct of two men in that city, named Cobarn and Dalton, who have been administering @ flogging to two you: gentlemen for trespassing on their connubia rights and taking undue liberties with their wivgs. One of these young gentlemen, as we learn from the Boston Time, Nov. 24, is Mr. William Sumner, a cousin of Hon. Charles Sumner, and his family is one of the highest respectability. He is between nineteen and twenty years of age, quite retiring and modest in his wangers, and one to be easily caught by an in! g and pretty woman. The name of the other young man {s Josiah Porter. Mr. Porter made a complaint before the Police Cou ainst Coburn and Dalton, jag cant we ae the case on his examination, which we give as reported in the Boston Times : Mr. Sumner, 2s it first caw and was introduced to the ladies, . Coburn and Mrs. Dalton. in Vinton"s Ssloon, at the timo when Mrs. C. eee and spoke to Mr. Porter. ‘fhe acqu then formed was slight, as but very little conversation passed between them; and the same may be said of the second meeting of the same parties in the same evening. At the third meeting of the samo parties, they all sat down at the same table, the ladies opposite the gentlemen, and held quite a long and lively conversation. At this interview Mrs. Dalton evinced a strong liking for Mr. Samner, and during the conversation she assed him a note ler the table, requesting im, in a whisper, not to show it to Mr. Por- ter. The young gentleman, who has had lit- tle or mo experience in such matters, was greatly surprised at this movement; and when the ladies bad retired he opened the note and read it to Mr. P. The tenor of the note was such as te excite the young man’s suceptibili- ties—for who can withstand the flattery of a pretty woman when she is determined to make you believe that she loves you. The note was auswered, and naturally enough a correspon- Saee egies fe ni ty During the when the correspondence was mis Tey = the parties met each other often in company with Mrs. Coburn and Mr Poitor ; but nothing occurred at these inter- views worthy of mention, unless it be that they indulged in a little kissing, but this was dove in the most modest and barmless manner. At one of the meetings prior to the grand ex- plosion and expose on Exturday, rs. D re- quested Mr Summer to return her notes, for fear of accidents, and he complied with her wishes. She, however, retained the answers sent to her, among which was one of Moore's amorous poems, addressed to her. Now comes the sequel. On Saturday after- noon last Mr Sumner repaired to a saloon in West street, where refreshments are sold, and Was quietly sippiug a cup of coffee, entirely unconscious of the chastisement which had then been inflicted upon his friend, Mr. Por- ter, and the cloud which was lowering about his own head, when two strangers approached him. One of them, Mr. Dalton, inquired if his name were Sumner, to which be replied in the efirmative. Mr. Dalton then said to him : ** Mrs. Dalton is very anxiozs to see you at her house this afternoon. I hayeacarriage at the door, and will take you right up there. If you miss the train I will send you home in my carriage.’’ Ar. Sumner declined going on on account of the lateness of the hour, (about 4¢ o’elock,) as he was afraid of missing the cars for Milton. Mr. Dalton again urged him to go, and, find- ing that Sumner still declined, he snid, “ You must go with us.’’ Tho two then gently drew Sumner out of the shop, got him into the car- riage, and ordered the driver to stop at 84 Shawmut avenue. The deportment of the two strangers, who had not revealed their names, excited the suspicion of Sumner thata!l was not right, bat he kept still. After they had entered the house, the two mea announeed themselves as Coburn and Daiton, and took Summer into the parlor, where he found tbe two wives. A conversa- tion ensued between the two parties, during which Dalton asked Sumner if he had ever taken any improper liberties with Mrs. D., or had piss hig hand upon her bosom. Sum- ner denied that he had ever done anything of the kind. Dalton then accused his wife of having made such a charge, te which she re- plied, “I placed his hand upon my bosom, be did not. He never took any improper famil iarities with me.”’ Dalton a red to be furious at this con- fession, a oth he and urn took hold of Sumner and dragged him down staire. While going down stairs, Mr. Sumner saw two men standing under the staircase, who ap- peared to have been hired to assist, im case of their services being required. Samner was taken to the basement room used for storing fuel, and the door locked upon him; after whieh Cobura and Dalton beat him with their fists until they were satisfied, or afraid to pro- ceed any further. A door was then opened, and Sumner was asked if he could see a fence stahding a few fect from him. He replied that he could, and they told him to start for it, Dalton giving him a kick as he started. Glad to escape from the hands of the ruf- fiens, Sumner did not look for any gate, but climbed over the fence. While on the fence, Coburn and Dalton rushed on him again, and struck him a number of heavy blows beforo he could getover and escape. Mr. Sumner then left c bome, with bis face badly bruised and suffering from the blows on the head. Thus ends the history of the second victim ; and we think that the public will, after read- ing it, have less ect for the ladies and their ruffian husbands, and much more sym- pathy for the two young men who have been so cowardly beaten. In answer to numerous inquiries, we would state that Mr. Dalton is employed as a clerk at No. 29 North Market street, and that Mr. Coburn is a salesman in the clothing estab- lishment of Joba Gove & Co., Merchants Row. The ladies are daughters of Mr. John Gove, and quite well known to alarge number of the young men ubout about town, who tell stran; stories conceraing the characters sustained by the females befere they were married. Ifone half of the stories in circulation have any foundation in fact, the husbands have but lite moral right to maintein, and the imdi- viduals whom they have so b beaten have been the only parties deceived and in- jared. Je A Rica Lecaoy—Firty Minrion Pousns Srex.ine.—The Syracuse Standard says that two enterprising young merchants of that city have recently received ii that they are heirs in a direct Iine to a large amount of money and property in land.
