6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL: MONEY MARKET. SATcRDAY, Oct. 27-6 P.M. The market was feverish this morning with slight ad- vances in some securities and « falling olf ix others. It ‘would, undoubtedly, have been @ bull market but for the repert, goon after the opening of the first board, of two or three failures. The number was ascer'sined, after the close of the second board, to be bat one, and that not very lange or very bad. Erie, after falling’ from 50K to 49%, recovered to 4934; Galena and Chicago sold at 117 cash, 118 buyer 50 days. We understand that a telegraphic despatch has been received to-day from Chi- tothe effpe: that the recnipts for Ostober will ox- ceed $900,000, We should uot be surprised to see a divi dend of twenty per cent on the Ist of February, (half cash and half stock,) instead of fifteen, The party who sold two thousand shares shor’ about ten days since will probably have a good time ot it in buying them in- Michigan Southern advanced one per cent, closing at 92. The receipts of this road, we are informed, will excecd $525,000 for October. If oue half the effort was made by the Michigan Southern to obtain business that i, made by the Michigan Central, the receipts would be twenty per cent larger. The Michigan Central is one of the best, if not the very best, managed roads ip this country, 80 far as getting business is concerned. There is nota point on the face of the globe where the slightest ‘emount of business can be expected that the Central have not an agent, with orders to secure il at any price, With- out the genius of the Michigan Cential, 1aueh of the busi- esa whieh now goes over the Great Western and New York Central would be lost. A close alliance «nd league, offen- sive and defensive, has been formed de\ween those three companies, the soul and spirit of which ix the Michigan Central, or rather Brooks, its Superintendent. He di- recta, and John Bull and New York Cvatrai pay. Itis not long since that Satterthwuith poiuted out fo his cir- cular from London, that New York Central, Great West- ern and Michigan Central had come to be regarded abroad as the great route between the Atlantic cities end the West, If Brooks was uct at the bottom of that “first ‘Tate notize,’? we are very much mistaken, But nature, as may be seen by a glance at the map, is against this Northern route, Within eighteen months we shall see a line completed from New York to Chicago, by way ot the Jersey Central and Pennsylvapia route through Clevelacd, at least one hun. edred miles shorter. In the meon time the Michigan Southern and Lake Shore roads might, by throwing off a -dittle of their dignity nud taking some pains to secure business, easily turn the tables. Michigan Central ad- vanced to-day %{; Missouri 6’s, 3; Illincts Central 7's, 34. Chicago and Rock Island closed firm at 90—the price of yesterday. Nicaragua advanced %, with large sales, Cleveland and Toledo declined 1; Reading, %; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 2; Panama, 2%; Cumberland, %. We heard of sales of 200 New York Central at 88%, and 100 at 88, As wre. predicted, the late panic is having one good effect, Parties are inclined to look closer to the intrinsic merit of their securities. Stocks that pay a sound divi- dend, that are safe and profitable to hold under any cir- ‘cumstances, quickly recover while those ofa precarious, doubtful, fancy nature, must drag till all remembrance of the fright is obliterated. We are a little surprised that there fs not more notice taken of bonds. There are many railroad bonds on the market at from eighty to eighty- five per cent, which, in point of security, are as good as a first mortgage on the Astor House for one thousand dollars. This is a pretty fair investment for qevenue, and in there squally times, for those who have a0 money to risk, is perhapy better—because safer—than any stoeks, It does not follow that because the stock of ‘a company is a bad investment, that its bonds must be 60 too, We can point to millions of bonds waich are per-. fectly aafe, while the stock of the companies is not worth astraw. But when a bond, in addition to its first lien upon the property, has double the smount of stock be- ‘hind it paying ten per cent profit and upwards, and sell- ing in:the neighborhood of par, such a bond must beyond all question be a perfect recurity. The Lockport Courier announces that J. W. Fitch, William M, Lanmen and William Waters bave obtained 4 judgment of $85,896 30 against the Lewiston railroad. ‘Does not the New York Central foot this billt We mere- ly inquire for information.
