It is to be hoped tha! ih steamer due by the other line will bring enough to make up the usual aggregate of the semi-monthly remitta:ct The Tritune of this morning says:— The Albany Argus hax 1 half column reply to the Herai’s attack upon Central, to which we alluded some days since, but it does not appear to meet the case. It simply denies the truth of the statements, and attacks the Hina in turn. Our eclurans we ogain ¢ tender to any friend of Central who wishes to reply to the Heraup at reasonable length. This is the second time our contemporary has called upon the friends of the Central Railroad Company to reply to our statements relative to the consolidation scheme, so successfully carried out in May, 1853; but the company appears to have no friends. No one can refute the tacts and figures we presented in such a strong light a few days since. We shall dispose of the Argus at our leisure, A simple denial of the truth of our statements is not sufficient for the public mind, and the fact that the Tribune has twice offered the use of its columns, without response, looks as though the company had no champion. The Zritune has been in the habit of puffing the Central so extravagantly that it better try a band in its defence, now tha: it has been so generally deserted. The Boston and Maine Pailroad, Me only company in all New England which sust»ined itself amidst the gen- eral ruin, has at last been compelled to give way and ac- hnowledge its insolvency. {here is every reason to be- Heve that if this company had confined itself to its legiti- mate business it would Lave escaped bankruptcy, but it lad become entangled in ali sorts of alliances, and im- mense losses of course followed. The Boston Traveller, of the Ist inst., gives the tollowing synopsis of the report made by the committee aypointed to investigate the com- pany’s finances:— The committee begin by a reference to the heavy ex- penses of the road for tav pa-tyear, which they trace to the coat of horse oe in reaching the depot; the rent of the Danvers Railroad, a new charge; an advance in the price of wood, and also in the price of labor. The average cost per mile appears to have advanced between 6 and 7 per cent, so that the same number of miles run this year cost $2,000 more than last year. They then devote Par tleular scrutiny to the always unpleasant circum- stance of having to borrow money to meet the payment of divicends, and find that (his system has been followed since 1854, the two last di idends having been thus paid. ‘the cause of this new policy iy traced to the advances which lave been mad» .» the Georgetown and Dan- vers read. The earnings of the road are on ay good footing as heretofore; the prospects for the * Unree months are fair, and we have no doubt an average divilend will be earned, but shall consider it a work of (he highest energy to pay thes floating debt from the assets, so as to enable one to be paid without, for the thiid time, borrowing money for the purpose. The conmittee next speak of the prospective liabilities of the corporatien, and find the tullow to exist:— $100 000 State Loan, due Avg 1, jot provided for 20,000 State Loan, due Aug. 1 1880) in 1849. 40,000 due ben Smith, who is litigating for a larger 20. 000 ue artlett & Minot, litigation connected with 125,000 tained by Mr. Hazen of Andover, who has re- covered a judgment, evicting us from several hundred yards of our track, and who demands that eum for his land (20 or more acres), which mast be paid, or we change the road, unless the Legirlature relieve against it. 20 to $26,000 in suits for personal damages, &>. estimated by Mr. Minot. 7,000 per annum on Danvers? lease, lest the amount > interest on the boads we shall retain as colla- 25,000 pussantood bonds due in twenty years, as above tess those we shall retain ax collateral, estimated about $50,000— interest contingent on Passumpsie preferred stock, as per agreement. 6,000 claim of Great Falle Manufacturing Company. 6,000 estimated a year on Northern, according to un- derstan¢ing, until certain results arrive, © 41,600 proposedto be expended on new freight house, the 75,000 feet of land in progress of reclama. tion adatitonal to to $16,000 estimated by Trea- surer for this year. The expenditure incurred in creati these en causes of reel annoyance iprocal amounts to over $2,500,000, a lai tion of which has been drawn from the treasuries Rho two roads, Not only may this capital be considered absolutely sunk, but the leases taken by the respective trank roads compel them to the Lipson age of a continued onerons duty of run- ning such roads, at an annual loss, of which we cannot see the end. By the special contracts with manu facturing corporations, merchandise—especially iron and coul—are carried at very low prices, and the committee recommend an acvance. The report next treats at length of the various arrri — with connecting roads, and complains that under quintuple treaty much of the Western and Canadian its are carried at scarcely remunerative rates. The ccatahios recommend that with such a floating debt in existence, & smaller freight house than that proj should be erected—they suggest about half an acre of warebouse, and an acre and a half of brid ing and filling. Over this route a first class locomotive can draw cighty loaded cars with case. With regard to the route from tue summit to Norristown, the summit between the Porkiomen and Norristown cau be entirely avoided by following the creck to its junction with the Echuylkill, and thence by the valley of that river, 83; miles to Norristown. The entire distance would thus be increased about two miles, while about 200 feet ascent and des ent would be thrown out, which according to the calculation of engineers, would be equi valent to four miles in distance. With this change in lo- cation, a level or descending grade would be obtained from the summit of Norristown. That the Allentown Railroad, from Allentown to Port Clinton or Aaburn, will be commenced speedily and pushed to completion at as early a period as money can do it, there is searsely a doubt—and that the Norristown and Allentown Railroad will also be built is almost equally certain, When these two lines shall have been completed, all that will be re- quired to consummate the long sought for route between Pottsville and Philadelphia, to relieve the Reading Rail- road ofa portion of its already overburthened and in- creasing tonnage, will be the construction of the proposed link, about six miles in length, commenciug about seven miles cast of Kutztown, and passing over very favorable ground to the summit, near Seibart’s Gap. From a pret- ty accurate knowledge of the ground, I can safely say that the cost of this link will not exceed $180,000, Stock Exchange.
