From the accounts given of this celebrated troupe in the Spanish and Cuban papers, we see that Mr. Llorente does not limit is repgesentations only to the merry boleros and sainetes, so common in the lind of Gil Blas, but has a repertory of coreographic performances, which canaot to make a furore also in our city. MONEY MARKET. ‘Tuspay, Sept. 26—6 P. M. There was not much change in the stock market to- day. With a pretty lively demand prices were pretty well sustained, Nicaragua, Cumberland, Eric and Read- ing were operated in largely, and closed at yesterday's prices, Erie has not varied one per cent for several days, and the probability of the combination being even ordi- narily successful is not very good, It is a big load to carry at any price, ad those who are unfortunate enough toget hold of it at high prices will stand a very good chance of being obliged to carry it, Reading was in de- mand to-day, and some large lots were sold. Cumbar- land is wvery strange stock. Itis a very good card tor speculators, and that isabout all itis good for. The company must be losing money at present prices on its coal, Nicaregua Transit holds its own. We notice many purchases on time, both buyer’s aad seller's option. Nearly all the leading Western Railroad stocks were ong the market to-day, and they were well maintained. Galena and Chicago opened and closed firm, Only three small lots were sold. Chicago and Rock Island was a little lower to-day. This glock 4s not moved much either way by mpeculators, There is very Nitle stock on the market, and that is being gradually picked up for investment. It never will be less than ten per cent dividend paying stock without any increase in earnings. With even a moderate increase it could divide fifteen and reserve a large surplus. When it is recol- lected that, three years ago, when the road was located, a large portion of the line traversed an open prairie, and that even now only a small part of the country along the line of the road is under cultivation, and seeing the busi- ness already developed, it is almost impossible for any one who has any regard for his judgment, to make an estimate sufficiently large to meet the increase of busi- ness. The bridge across the Mississippi line at Rock Island will be finished by the Ist of December, and the road to Towa City by the Ist. of January, 1856. That would open a section of country of unsurpassed fertility, thetravel and traffic of which must all pour over the Rock Island road to Chicago, Rock Island is the only Placeon the Mississippi line where @ railroad bridge can ve extended across, and this alone will give that road a great advantage over all others running West. Ili- nois Railroad bonds sold freely to-day, but at lower pri- ces, Other railroad bonds were much noglected, Ai the second board there was no change of conse- quence. Erie was comparatively quiet, and so were all the other leading stocks. The Assistant Treasurer reports as follows :-— Paid on Treasury account $111,911 07 Received on ‘Treasury account. 3,222 Balance on Treasury account. 16, 00, 100 $3 Paid for Assay office a4 3,894 05 Paid on disbursing checks 42,772 64 The Boston banks pay their usual October semi-annual dividend on Monday next. “The following,” the Bee says, “has been handed us as the expected per centim from the several institutions Freemans, Market, Suf- folk, 5 per cent; Boylston, 43g per cent; Atlantis, Atlas, Blackstone, Boston, Broadway, Commerce, Eagle, Eliot, Exchange, Faneuil Hall, Globe, Grocers, Hamilton, How- ard, Mechanics, Merchants, National, New England, North, North America, Shawmut, Shoe and Leather Dealers, Traders, Tremont, Wnion, Washington, 4 por cent; City, Columbian, Granite, State, Webster, 334 per cent; Massachusetts, 3 1-6 per cent; Maverick, 3 percent. The following eemi-annual rates of dividends have been decided on by the Lowell banks named:—Railroad, 4 per cent; Lowell, 5; Prescott, 4; Merchants, 8, Yhe Apple- ton will pay 444 or 5 per cent, but have not definitely settled which. The Wamesit have not yet fixed upon their dividend. ‘The Boston Transcript of the 24th inst. says:— The banking institutions in this city, after consultation and deliberation, have decided to settle their balances at a clearing house, similar in its organization to the one now so successfully in operation in New Yori. It was decided that before the arrangement was carried into effect, it should receive the approval of those represent- ing two-thirds of the banking capital in the ‘ity. The plan Lins been agreod upon by institutions, having throe- fourths of the bank capital, and it will doubtless. bo adopted by all the banks. Tho business of settling the daily balances will be greatly facilitated, and it is thought that the clearing house will have @ benafic keeping the banks in a healthy condition. We hear that the plan meets with such favor that there can ve no doubt of its complete success, During the last twelve months the cry among those having money to invest, has been, ‘In what can we place it with safety?” Now, the tables haying turned, Gnd the crops and business give pragpects for a prosperous future, the question occurs, “In What can we invest for immediate income!’ Our railroads, with but fow ex- ceptions, however valuable to the country through whic they pass, from their grades, and otherwise defective construction, are liable to be superseded, or so far de- prived of their trade, as to leave but the local business for their support. To Albany we now have three badly constructed roads, with the river for the trade. To Bos- ton, we bave so many air lines, besides the Sound, that it is difficnlt to determine which is tho right one, or on which the-traveller can reach the place in safety. To the West, again, the stockholder. is without encouragement, The roads are not only badly located, but “gauged” to conform to the spirit of monopoly with which they were conceived, and now when the expenditure is adding to the capital—is running away with the dividend fand— and the policy of the management is to kill off the opponents, in what can the stockholder cling to, in the hope of a return for his investment? Such are briefly the prospects before us; and ag the reciprocity treaty is cutting off the trade and the population of the North, and the Pennsylvania roads are doing their work in the West, we, the New York stockholders, are bulling our favorites, shutting our eyes to the facts, and hoping for a new batch of dupes to relieve us of our “perma- nent investments,’ But “every dog has his day.”” The people of Ponnayl- Vania started upon turnpike roads, and, as they believe, monopolized the trade of the West. The commerce of the country was likewise under their control, and in con- templating the ships and Conestoga wagons they believed and proclaimed themselves the greatest people of the world. Financially, they were the levers by which the movements of the continent were to be regulated; and commercially, their position secured the monopoly, and, of course, their futuro greatness. But, in the midst ot their ‘glorious prospects,” a dream or a mist ‘‘overcloud- ed their hopes.” De Witt Clinton, with a mind singularly in advance of his cotemporaries, and enter- prise equal to the conception, brought forth his “Ditch,” and fora time buried both his fortune and fame, but eventually raised the city and State to their present im- Portance, Since then, his successors, with but a tithe of his genius, have expended $128,000,000 in railroads, and instead of “monopolising the business,’ they have, by their location, their grades, their gauges, and the fragility of construction, superseded the designs of Clin- ton, driven the bulk of the trade to the Welland canal, and are now characteristically cutting the throats of their cotemporaries, and bestowing upom Pennsylvania the honors and the profits of the trade they desired to feoure, These frets, though briefly alluded to, are sud- stantial and trothfal, They are not the conception of » selfish or @ local interest. They are every day illustrated and proclaimed in the official reports. In the monthly reports we have the inereased receipts, but not the in creased expenses, and in the annual dividends we have either a corresponding increase of capital or a floating debt equal to the sum divided, We have in this State an expenditure of nearly one hundred.and twenty millions ofdollars in railroads, which does not yield to those who have advanced that enormous sum an average of three per cent. The Erie, Harlew, Hudson River, Ogdensburg and Saratoga do not pay @ centin the shape of dividends, and some of them do not pay the interest on bondsissued. The New York Central pays eight per cent ona capital of $25,000,000, which tends materially to bring up the small average named. That company, representing about one-third of the entire railroad capital of the State, is not likley to continue long in its present apparently prosperous condition, It has been in operation about twenty-five years, ani the road has become old, dilapidated and rickety, No reservation has been made any year for depreciation, and the tranl: and superstructure had run down so low last year, that three millions of dollars had to be spent upon the line at once, to keep it in even decent order, That three millions wasraised by an issue of bonds, notwithstanding which the totalnet earnings have since been divided in dividends and no provision made for future extraordinary repairs. The managers have squeezed out the regular four per cent semi-annual dividend by the skin of their teeth, while the decay and damages to property which is represented to have cost upwards of thirty-eight millions of dollars, exposed to wear and tear of heavy traffic, and dangers from the elements, are not provided for to the extent of one dollar. The attention and exertions of the managers have been devoted entirely to the payment of dividends, without giving a thought to the preservation in proper order of the immense amount of perishable property, 50 necessary to secure the future prosperity of the company. Very soon another three millions of dollars will be raised by a new issue of bonds to repair the track. Every dol- lor of that sum is required for that purpose this mo- ment, and every month’s delay is only adding largely to the expenditure. Had this company done from the start what the Galena and Chicago, Chicago and Rock Island, and Michigan Southern haye—made a proper reservation from its earnings for depreciation and other contingen cies—the stockhol ders would have got smaller dividends, but the construction account would have been mauy millions less than what it is, The North American Gutta Porcha Company have brought their manufactures to wonderful perf Their vulcanized gutta percha fabrics, manufactur der patents, are, without exception, the most beautifat and useful articles we know of, and it is not, at all sur. prising that they have been compelled to extensively ea- large their works. Gutta percha is far superior to Tai rubber in the manufacture of articles for domestic p poses. India rubber is not a perfect repellant of water, but is more or less absorbent, while gutta percha has an exceedingly fine grain, and its oily property makes it a complete repellant of all liquids. Vor whalemen it is indispensable, for it will resist heat and ofl, We learn that the government of the United States have ordered of the company two thousand entire suits for the army, and that the British government have ordered ten thou- sand knapsacks, Uplil the works are enlarged, the com- pany cannot supply the orders already received from dit- ferent governments, for garments, &e, for their armies. The freedom from smell and sticking property, and the great pliability of the vulcanized gutta percha fabrics, make them particularly desirable and valuable. The Secretary of the Navy gave an order to fully test gutta percha before introducing it into the service, and the re- port was as follows:— naitk Pet, Jackets, mado of gutta percha fabrie, wore in the came manner as the cloth clothing for the as under a pressure of thirty tons, ‘They were then placed over a steam boiler in the yard, and remained for sixteen days subject to an average temperature of 100 degrees, at times as high as 212 degrees, On examina- tion, the garments were found in the same state as when packed. There was no adhesion of the folds, nor any de- composition of the gutta percha, One jacket was dripped in water, rolled up and sewed in the covers, (but not pressed,} and subjected to the same heat’ for throe days. Un examination, this was also found uninjured.
