Whr~ a love of a law.—Boston Gazette. Restoring the Drowned. On my return to the city I received the fol- lowing communication that excellent citizen, Capt. R. B. Forbes, a member of the Humane Society of Massachusetts, whose best energies are devoted to the adoption of means for the better protection of human life: Bosron, September 18, 1855. My dear Sir: The recent loss of a dear friend with her daughter and another lovely young lady, by drowning at Swan Island, in the Kennebec, renders it necessary to do all that ean be done to avert similarcalamities Those lovely victims were drowned in shoal water, and were taken out by an inexperienced per- son in less than twenty minutes—still warm, I believe—and yet from, superstitious or other eyually uofortunate motives, nothing was dore to revive them. Here are some simple direct- ions which I am having printed on ecards to carry in the pocket; the newspapers will also publish them, so thata circulation of fifty thousand or more copies will be insured at once. I suggest that the same thing be done tm New York. And romain, az always, very truly your servant. R. B. Fornes. Even Mentam, Esq., New York. The following are the directionefor restoring persons apparently drowned: Convey the body to the nearest house or shelter, with the head raised. Strip and rub itdry. Wrap in warm blankets. Inflate the langs by closing the nostrils with the thumb and finger, while you blow forcibly into the mouth; and then press on the chest with the band. Again blow into the mouth and again press, so on for ten minutes, or until the patient breaths naturally. Keep the body warm, and the extremities also; continue to rab, and do uot give up for an hour or more, if there is the least reason to hope. To this we add—do not bo discouraged if animation is not immediately perceptible, but continue the affort for even two hours. Sept. 20, 1555. E. Meztax. If not refused at once the practice will become so general that i short time the banks will reject all such picces, and those who receive them will be left to bear the loss. Ee" Lf you wish to know yourself, look, when you travel, at the tombs which borver the road. Whore rest the bones and light ashes of kings, tyrants and wise men—of ail those who were proud of their birth, their wealth, their lory and their beauty.
