FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Turspay, Aug. 21—6 P. M. ‘There was a little more actifty this morning among the leading railroad stocks, but prices. were not sustained. At the first board Canton Company declined } per cent; Cumberland Coal, }; New York Central Railroad, {; Hariem, j; Reading Itail- road, {; Cleveland and Toledo, j. Michigan South- ern Railroad advanced 4 per cent; Illinois Internal Improvement Bonds, }. The transaotions in State stocks to-day covered quite a variety, but not much amount; railroad bonds were in little better demand at prices previously current. The market has no life, and operators have not that spirit exhibited a few weeks since. Most of the stocks on the list appear to have reached points as high as specula. tion can carry them. Those paying dividends may vemain there, but those of a fancy character, aud those paying dividends by borrowing money on issuing bonds at enormous sacrifices, must full back to a level more in accordance with their actual value. A stock which does not pay dividends is in reality much better than one which for a time pays them by increasing its floating or funded indebted- ness, and ultimately suspends, involved in all worts Of emberrasements, Both Erie and Harlem re actually better stocks mow thin when they were paying regular semj-annual divi- dends. Then they were getting deeper and deeper into difficulties, and the longer they paid dividends the greater their embarrassments became, until, by @ final suspension, an opportunity was given to re- cuperate. It will be many years before the stock- holders in either of them will ever get a cent, but they may ve thankful that the roads did not fail in- to the hands of receivers. The Western railroads, asa general thing, are doing well; but there are some black sheep among them. An unfinished rail- road, one that is contiaually in the market as a bor- rower of money at high rates of interest, aud u seller of bonds at enprmous discounts, never should pay dividends, even if it has a net income large enough 10 do so, }ut should appropriate its earnings to the liquidation of its immediate liabilities, and relieve itself from all financial difficulties. Instead of doing this, we find railroads borrowing money at usurions rates, on short time, selling its bonds at great sacri- fices and paying dividends, without earning the first cent. Their managers conceive it neceasary to carry | on this cut-throat game to sustain their corporate credit, but they finally bring up deeply involved in debt, abandon their dividends and become hope- kessly bankrupt. After the adjournment of the board the iollowing saics of bonds and stocks were made at auction by Simeon Draper :-— £200 Newfoundland Electric Tele; yh band, for..$10 00 $460 Cincinnati, Logans’t & Chi. Covered in from miscellaneous sources, Repayments on account of the navy. 562 On the 16th of March last, the Cleveland and To; ‘edo Railroad Company declared a dividend of ten per cent for the previous twelve months. ‘That di- vidend was paid in bonds which were issued at less than sixty-five per cent. The next six months end the Ist of October, and it is about time to look around end figare up the probabilities of a dividend. ‘The gtoss earnings of the company for the four | months past, according to official returns, were as | tollows:— Total groas earnings V'stimated for August. Do. dor September . Yotal gross income for six months. Current expenses, fifly per evut do.....$! laterest on bunds, $5,549,000, @ months, 224,210 Total met earnings....+-++ ‘The capital stock amounts to about three millions of dollars, and there is a large floating debt. The above net income is equal to only two and a half per cent on the capital, but before any dividend can be paid the interest on the floating debt, at leam, must be provided for, 80 that the rate is likely to be considerably leas than two and a half percent. We have no idea that the company will acknowledge its inability to pay a larger dividend, and to cover up jts unproductiveness may reaort to another issue of donds, and squeeze out five per cent. From Cleve- land to Toledo is one hundred and tweive miles. It isa good route for a railroad, as it ison one of the main lines Letween the East and West. A road properly laid out, well built and well managed, would undoubtedly have peid « fair profit on the amount actaally expended. The road as it now stands cost too much. It hae already cost, in its anfinisbed state, double what it should have cost completed and fully equipped. It has two tracks of siifferent gauges, requiring the maintenance of two sistinct sets of equipments. This sort of manage- ment ie visible throughont, and where fifty per cent bf gross earnings might suffice for expenses on ordi- ‘nary roads, it will require upwards of sixty on this. ‘There are, in fact, two distinct roads to support. ‘The following communication has been called out dy our Temarks regarding the finances of this com- pany, and the writer agrees with usin the views pxpressed :-~ CLEVELAND AND TOLEDO RAILROAD. Various plans have been under the ferrin gig hark be = secnre the means of providing for t! completion the road, but they were all decided to be insufficient for the desired purpose until the present tplin was, after thorough consideration and consultation with some of the lending stockbolders, tinally adopted, as the most fensible, This plan, if responded to by the stockholders will se- cure the great object of completion, and will enhance the value of the stock from ita present depreciation to a nearer approximation to its intrinsic value.
