6 NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, AUGUST.13, 1856. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ‘.MORRY MARKET. faut o'ev'st Seo Suxpay, Aug. 12-6 P.M During the paat Week the stock market his been wocmally buoyant, and an immense umouut of Dusiseas Was daly transacted throughout. “Quota- tong for ail the heading stocks show a handsome ad- waace}) ‘the close yesterday were firm, with an upward) yy. The principal operations during the preseit deason have been in sound, productive Recurities, The fancies meet with little favor’ from ‘@ay class, and prices are only sustained by the ma- tured influence of a rising market. This is favora- bie feature of the existing speculative excitement. A in thiv'respeet differs from all others within our perience and we attriLute it entirely to the serious Acases of last year. It will be some time before the disasters of thas period are forgotten, and their recol. lection will exercise @ wholesome influence upon Wail street affaizs. The sudden start and rapid rise last week in prices, for productive stock securities, was caused principally by the unexpected falling off in rates for foreign exchange. This changed the specie movement to a great extent, and ‘he probabilities of an accumulation of gold from California receipts suddenly beeame too Strong to resist. Many of the strongest and most in- fluential bears at once entered the market a& buyers, and secured a portion of their shares before the im. Provemeat had proceeded far. In this they exhibited their usual shrewduess. The fact of so many large fellers hecoming large buyers gave a great impetus éo the market, and for a few days quite an excite- ‘ment prevailed at the Board and in the street. After @ time we shall find the class of bears more distinct- dy defined again, when the contest with the bulls will be carried on a8 vigorously as ever. The con" tinaed abundance and cheapness of money, in con nection with the belief that there will be no change at present, is one of the causes of the recent sudden inflation of prices; and ao long as the attention of purchasers is confined to the dividend class of stocks, the advance in market value may be gradual and steady, and the dangers of a collapse reduced as the securities become distribated among those able to hoid as permanent investments. Mr. Aibert H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auc- ‘tion file of stocks and bonds will take place on Mon- day next, the 13th inst., at 12} o'clock, at the Mer- chants’ Exchange. ‘Che exportation of specie from this port last week ‘was comparatively limited :— SeuraagIs OF Speci: FROM THE PorT or New York. Hark John Caskie, East Indios, Spanish cot Tauretta, Para, Am. gold seumship Atlantic, Li ‘Votal for the week, Previously . ‘Total for 1855.40.04... During the past week about nineteen hundred thousand dollars were entered at this port from Ca- lifornia, besides the sums coming in the hands of passengers by two steamers from San Francisco. ‘The next weekly bank returns will not show much variation in the specie department, but the returns for the following week wust show a handsome in. cre. ‘The annexed statement exhibita the gross earnings of the Harlem Railroad Company for the month of July, Decrease. Increase. $4,024 $4,024 Neti phe nap ++++$15,879 "fhe great bulk of the increase is just where it should be (in the passenger receipts) to pay the buoyant per cent profit. We understand that the company have reduced ita current expenditures atovt $7,000 per month. This, with the extra com- poasetion it will receive from the New Haven Rail- road Company after October, must considerably in- ereaze its net income another year. ‘The stock of the Reading Railroad Company being now the first on the list, let us examine the super- structare, location and appointments, and determine how far it may be considerod as 2 model to all future ‘operations of the k'nd in the country. Its length, ua every body knows, is ninety-three miles, and be sides a double track, with sidelings on the line ofthe road, equal to half the distance. It is laid down in the most substantial manner, with the heaviest iron rails ia the country. Ite grade deseends twenty-two feet to a dead level, on which a single engine can ‘anil 500 tons ata specd of ten miles per hoor. tne deed, #0 nicely isthe grading adjusted, that the ful power of the engine is only required in the return of the empty cars. At the end of the road, and exactly at the point where the elevation is required for dumping facili- tes, a short plane, at the rate of 40 feet to the mile. is enceontered. On this ascent, which, in any other position woold seriously interfere with the busi- ness, three engines ure required te carry ap the jJoad; aad, as the fact thus tested, not only deter- mines the advantages over undulating reads, but gives the data by which the cost can be estimated, it may be regarded es an important trath in rail- road science. In all our de the grades hove been regaided as secondary objecte; bnt now, when the expense account is running away wiih the dividend tu this matter, with some others of less impor. tance. are worthy the attention stockholders. Besdes the advantages of snperstruetare and grades, the location of the Reading roud is peca- Niaiy adapted to busines. ('n the enst, the Deanches diverging to the several collevies, including the Catawissa road, pass into it with rapidly de- ascending grades, Inthe middle port of the re- gioa ike advantages present themselves in its fa- vor; #udon the south it meets not only the same facilities to the colleries, but the Mahanoy road at- tycbing it to Sunbury and Prie, and the Dauphin avd Buaqnehanna with the Pennsylvania Central, ‘vhese works, without the main lines Wranching to the noet and west ina connected form, exteud to er 500 miles, and if we view the work as the f outlet to the business of the valley of the fobhaytkil, (the richest valley inthe country, ac- cording to its length,) we will be able to determine its future business, Witee toll knowledve of al) these fucta, and ia view of the prospects which cannot be forestalled or puperveded, what has icen the course of the managers? fustead of -ecuring the objects required by the trade to themselves, they anticipated the advantages and wecured the railroad into the city—the depots and the wharf property, by which the capacity of the road is determined, to the stockholders, On the wihurt property they have now in operition eighteen wharves, with sidelings equal to the accommodation | of 5,000,000 tous of coal, and they have yet apace tore similar number, which will eventnally be re amined by the trade. For the depots, they secured aqnares, at prices fer below their present vaine; and as the bridge and railroad, with the right Of way into the city, was obtained at one-third the cust, # cannot be said that seliishness, x0 fashiona. ble im other quarters, has had any jaflaence ia the owaagement of the Reading, The increase iu the valve of Che property secured to the stockholders is alone estimated at from two and a half to threo mitiion of dollars. On the road, according to the report Of last week's coal business, the traffic ix equal & 3,000,000 tons per amurn; and when their exteasive workshops, their sidelings at the several depots, and their numerous stone and iron bridges, art taken into the catologue of their assets, the as. toolhing part of the matter is, that the co is but $15,064,114 6L-on which the gross incone will exceed 33 per cent Theanthracite coal tonnes this for the past week i neariy equal to that of the previous week, which was larger than in any one week ever before. It reaches by the three lines the very heavy aggregate of 130,225, only 308 tons less than during the last previous week- The Reading Railroad brought down for the weck ending on Thureday last, 59,386 tons, aud for the year to that time, 1,415,740 tons, being an increase over the tonnage of the road to corresponding time last year, Of 158,920 tons. The Schuylkill Naviga’ tion, for the weck ending on Thursday, brought down 28,401 tons, and for the season, 510,094 tons, being an increase of 75,184 tons on the tonnage of the canal to corresponding time last year. The in- creased production of coal thus far this season, from the Schuylkill region, is 224,104 tons. Mining ope- rations in the region, we are informed, continue to be prosecuted with more than usual vigor. The ehipments of coal from the Lehigh for the week end- ing with Saturday last, were 42,438 tons, against $3,719 tons for corresponding week last year; for the Feason, 634,731 tons, against 682,660 tons to same me last year. The demand for shipment continues very active, without change of price. The retail market begins to give signs of improvement, and will now, probably, show an increasing activity from week to week, as the city fills up by those who have been absent during the great summer heats, ‘The total shipments of anthracite coal from Rich- mond, the depot of the Iteading Railroad Company, during the week ending August 4th, 18556, was as follows Albany, N.Y Boston, Musi Bridgeport, Ct Norfolk, Va.
