New Haven, July 24, 1855. ‘Now Haves, or at least « very large portion of it, is ia a state of the most pleasing excitement, for to-day the commencement of Yale College begins, and, as almost every one knows, who is st all acquainted with the matter, the anniversary of that venerable institution ia always an occasion of the greatest interest. The wea: ther bes been threateni:g sll day, but the people here pay very little attention to it, and if it should prove ever ao unfavorable it will hardly prevent the people from enjoying themselves. Hundreds of the former graduates of ‘O'd Yale,” as it is affectionately called, have re- turned from their homes ia different parts af the Union to look once more upon the time-honored walls of their ‘Alma Mater, to renew the associations of their earlier days, and to join im the festivities of the Occasion, The merchsat has left his counting-houge and the busy marta of commerce; the lawyer has for the time bing forsaken forgotten ‘‘ bis quirks, his quiddities and his tricke;”’ the physician bas consigned hia patient to the decree of fate, fortunately, doubtless, for them™ solves in many cases; and even the min'ster bas re- signed bis place in the palpi: and left his flock to sup- ply their epiritual needs ‘aemselves, and allare to b> found mingling here toge’her in the moat pleasant fol lowship, recalling the reminiscences of the past, and indulging in those little amenities of social _interoourss which, although trifilog us they may appear to some, make up, after ail, the real pleasure of life, The stu dents swarm the streets, they throng the hotela; they are, infact, #0 omniprerent that New Haven appears to be taken captzve by them. Like victorious soldier returning from a brilliac! campaign, they are the cyno- aure of alleyes, and it wouia appear that the ladies bave become #0 evanwre2 of them that they will not even deign to les upok apy other of man.
