i } Politics in Tennessee. SPEECH OF ANDREW J, DONELSON, ESQ , THE PRIVATE SRORETARY AND ADOPTBD 8ON OF GENBRAL JACK- SON, AT AN AMERICAN MEBTING IN LHBANON, TEN- NEGSRB, ON SATURDAY, THE 30TH ULT. Tam proud to meet you on an occasion like this. 8 BE ‘We are here not as whigs or demoorsts, but as friends of our country, knowing no party but that which is determined to sustain the constitation, aud rescue the federal goveroment from the incom: apd faithless hands whic are now adminis: ring it, and which have sought to convert sec- tional jealousy and hostility into a pe manent source of power. Although we have differed here on sme mncneree oe pale policy and exp:- diency, we huve always ted togetter wnen mn cove! of the constitution were in danger, id the fundamental doctri:es of our republican were sougut to be undermined. Noman rerd to the support of Ja keon wita more than the havens Webster, in the wi power'ul aod talented men it a State couid absolve her citizens in oysonion, to those higher law men who were ly resisting the fulfilment of constitutions! covenants. Tre true whigs acd trus democrats of that day Icved their country more than party, and thrir common end united exertions saved us then, as they did in 1850, and as I trust will in 1856. Fellow citizens—The sentiment the feeling which brougnt tse e«ucd men of 1832 and 1850 to act together, are the sentiment ard feeling on which we rely for the eucceas cf he American yarty, whore platform you are aseembied here todiy to ratify, and bead as the guide of our fatare po- htical course. It is admitted very generally that the democratic party, as represented by Mr. Pisrce and his Cabinet, is nothing but a coalition of a0: litionista and nollifiers, and that the couatry never can pr ‘until ite counsels are directed by wiser apd men. The effect of tais administration is to deatroy sll national tove in the management of our affairs, to bring down to a sectional g both the men «nd measures of party, t> oae) tne patronage of office in conflice witn the lom of elections, and by weakeniog the b.nis of our Union, to jeorardizs the perpetuity of the Dleesings banded down to us bs our fachers. [ was one those recently at Poilade'phia, where the convention assem! which bas framed the spletform tow under your consideration, and [ can may to you, fellow citizens, with all sincerity and fhuth, that the judgment I have just on the went e: ve government at Washington is barmopy with toat of nearly every intelligent man I conversed with, whatever may have been his eerie ty antecedents. The nullifiers of the the North control all the patronage of the epee They have sent ench meno as 5sulé, @ man Who was banished from F'ranze for his law- Jess conduct, to manage our dipiomatic relat'ons with the great governments of Europe; and, ag might bave been expected, the achievement of the administration is a disgracefal Osterd 8, = (ape the Wino ae ns cxaiDl a - waton- ab opporti 0 com mit an act iracy on @ friendly power. ‘Aad results equally netaral and disastrous to our vational fame are appearing now on every theatre of the administrative action of the federal government. Fiiibusteriam in Europe, in Central rica, in the Gulf of Mexico, is the order of the day, wherever the action ot Mr. Pierce and ‘his Cabinet is felt at all in our foreign relations; aod the same remark may be made in regacd to the in- uence of the government in all ics in‘erior opera- tions. If the tree is to be judzed by the fruts it ears, if » man is to bs kaown by the com- pany he keeps, then must this administration de forever referred to as a striking illus tration of the fact, that treachery and poset , contal cer Be political, as in other rela’ within themselves a punishment whic’ it is imoos— sible joes to conceal or avoid. We are told, fellow- citizens, in tae and inspired Scriptures, ‘that the days of calamity were made for the wicksd.” In view of this awtul truth, let us exsthias fur a mo- ment, somewhat in detail, the conduct of Mr. Pierce. Before he came irto the Presidency be wruts t> ma that on tbe great questions pu; in issue by the com- ae of 1850, he steod where Gen. Jackson did. at is to say, be dencunced 6s traitors tae nalli- fiers and higner law men, under whose blows our Joricvs Ui ion and constitution were reeling. That may be charged with no misrepresentatioa or mistake in this particular, [ exhibit you the letter ot Mr. Piere, and offer it to the inspection of any .one who may desire to see it, in which letter he used the following language: ‘‘ There is a great attle before us—a battle for the Union—a battle for the aecencancy of the prin iples, the main’e- nance of which ao nobly signalized the admiutstra— tion of Gen. Jackecp.”” Now, wbo were fig iting ia this battle sgeinat the Union, sgainst the consti- ciples of Gen. Jackson? They were the cullifiers of the South, headed by Jeff. Davis, Soulé, Borland ard others; and tuilitiers Oy Filmore, Webster and {Bronson. Now this naltify- ipg or dieupion band established a paver at Wash- imgton, called the Southern Press, whose business i was to tredace and calamniate every man who gustained the compromise. The leading idea of thi jorous sheet was, that no dem 2crat coal the compromise, and that the South if it acqu'esced in it. If repeat the compromise, ths g : ie see ; =| ef i i E Bs ee FEEE i He eeEeE ag FE it i if beers 83 fe cil eeeeiecs the an identification of the appticuat with the disunion schemes of the Hartford Conveation No. 2, assembied at Nashville. Fellow citizens, I call this condac’ of Mr. Pieice base treachery— treachery that has aot its équal on the page of onr history sinve the form sion of the government. Bat my old democratic friends tell me tbat they are not t) biame, aod that the democratic party is not to be biamed since it does not endorse this treachery. My reply is, to this suggestion, that no effort has been made here or elsewnere by any portion of the democratic party to repodiate the «administra tin. 80 far from anything of thie sort beng ipted, we see, on the coutrary, the most strenuous exertions to sustain tie condact of the Executive. Look at Virginia, and what doftyoa see there? Why, the calamniator of Jackson acd Polk has been elec‘ed by the icfluence of what is tasre called the democratic party, merz'y because he fa vors the doctrines of tne fire eaters and cisuntovists; and the same party is trying ty accomplish the sams r» ults in every State where there is an election. Let 10 ask what is tie Mesviog ot Aady Jonnson’s Ja cob’s Ladderiem in this State’ I: ts understood endorsement of the Pier. active in the support of hia eiection. So it is witn these officehol warriors of Mr. Pierce. They revel in the work uf decapita tion and hold up their victims with j yous acciama- ticn, counting them as co many mrmorials to be called up when the trophies ot office are to bs dis tributed. Woy, fellow-citizens, it is now said that nota member of the American Barey csn hold an office. I forbear to follow out apy fysther the copdact of the Pierce administration. mngh has been said to wos that no good Union man, who stood whers fackeon did in 1832, could consistently advocate euch an administration. It would be easy to show that precisely the same atate of facts exist ia regard to the whig pa-ty, as it stood in its purity. Free roilers and jonists taking the name of whigs have absorbed the power of the party practicaliy. The true whig end the true democrat can then con- sll the capgerous isms of the day, aud rec ® omy the great and sentiments of such pa- triots as the father of his couutry cherishe’. It is this plutform which has been adopted at Philadel- hia by the General Council of the American party. 00k at it, fellow-citizens, examice whatfit contalos cn the subject of Union, the Leip set) aad the foreign and Roman Catholic aence. Mr. Denelson here read extracts from the platforn, and after deecanting upon the passages in rela- tion to the Ruman Catbolice, and sho: that there was no design to interfere with the joas rights of that or ary other denomination of Chris tiara, concluded bis semarks. But before doing eo, he adverted to the report that he was a dissppoint- ed office eeeker. Tcis report, he stated, has vroce- by grown out of a letter which he addrested ¢o Mr. Pferce before his inauguration, 10 behalf of bis s2n- iv-law, Col. Wilcox, then a member of Congress from Mississipol. This letter he then read, end showed that Mr. Pierce, after the organization of ois cabinet, couid act have appointed his sou-ia law, inssmuch as the cndition of his appointment in- volved a principle wh'ch the President hed violated in the composition of the cabinet. Mr. Doucisoa stated that he recommended @ man for offi ¢ because thet man bed vincicated the cause ot the Uaion aad op.vosed the seceders and abolitionsta, and did not wish thy appointment of nia friend, except as an evidence of the President's determination to main- tain the doctrine of Gen. Jackeon on the subject of nullification. This is > fally stated in the lester that there can be no mistake avout it. Mr. D. would have been diseppointed if Mr. Pierce had givea the eppeintment to bis son-in-law after the formation of the cabinet, because that cabinet wae coa- pored of nullifiers and free soilers. The whole yeport was, therefore, character zed fxs a slander, auch as could only emanate fcom a President who re forfeited his Bledges to A ergs — Crear ive, compromise ir. All the leading stocks sod at lower prices, aud there appeared to be a general desire to sell. The bask statement, publisbed to- day, is pot at all satisfactory. The great expansion of Icans bas frightened cautious operators, and they have availed toemselves of the high prices ruling and reslized. They are undoubtedly wise in so doing. With a line of discounts samming up tairty” eight million of Collars, it is fall time to look about and eee how prices for stock securities are likely to be affected by a contraction. A similar recommendstion is to be made to the members of the association, in case the quality of any cargo of coal shall, upon survey of the committee, prove interior to the article pur chased or contracted for, or in case a cargo weighed by # sworn weigher shall tarn out to be short. ihe committee recommend that dealers shall not settle for cargoes of anthracite un‘il they are landed, s0 that quailty and weignt may be made satisfactory while the purchasers have the account opea. The coal trade of the Camberland region is pro- gressing favorably. For the week ending the 30!) ult., 52 boats descended the Chesapeake and (Ohio capal, carrying 5,503 tons of coal.
