The canteens ere then filled with spirits of wine, vu lard, oil and water, all of which were sudmitied to degree of heat mentioned sbove, and the liquors kept in the can- teens for twenty-four hours. They were not impaired by the bigh temperature applied to them, amd there was no perceptible action upon the fabrics by either of the liquids, The resulta of the aforementioned experiments were so satiof to the Board, that it was deemed {mportant to ascertain what would be the effect of a long continued high heat upon the fabrics. sane ments were accordingly made by the Quartermaster for applying this heat, and the adjourned to meet again on the 20th inst. PHILADELPHIA, Pa., April 20, 1855 —The Board met pursuantto adjournment. Present, all members. An examination was then made of which bad been folded and rolled up into » compressed package also the canteens containing the liquids be. fore mentioned, all of which had been subjected for a week to a continuous heat of from 100 to 150 degrees Fabrenheit in « close room. ‘The articles contained in the package were found to be not impaired by the action of the heat and were ap- bare the same state aa before being submitted to teat. ‘There was a slight taste imparted to the spirits of wine, but no change could be perceived in the oil, vine- gar or water from tue action of the gutta percha upon them. Several articles werefplaced in an ice house, em- bedded in the ice, and after being kept there for several ca vere examined while in a very cold state and found ver: pliable. Several articles were presented to the Board to tnd which are not enumerated in the list before mentioned. ‘These are a military cap, or hat of a new pattern, a may reim, and sword scabbard, all made of gutta a. ain the teats that the Board have been able during the Nmited time it has been in session to “pely to tne fa- Drics presented, have been perfectly satisfactory to all the members, and they would recommend for » practi- cal service trial upom the frontiers the articles herein enumerated, tobe placed in the hands of the troopa, in order to ascertain whather they will prove serviceable in the field. Several letters from officers of the army and navy have been ated to the Board, which give tl cy of their experience in the use of the guita all of which are favorable. ‘Tne Board would especially recommend for the use of the enlisted men the military sbawl, knapsaok, baver- sack, canteen, valise, stock, cap and cover or hat, bridle rein, racdle bags, and sword and bayonet scabbard. ‘The Board also recommend for the expedition that has been ordered into the plains under General Harney, the large sacks for the transportation of flour, sugar, coffee, ical and ordnance stores, or other articles that are liable to become damaged by exposure to moisture or the weather; also, the tanks for carrying water or other liquids, and the water buckets for the use of trains. the ecenomy of transportation, as in the preserva- tion of the contents, these articles are by the Board as very superior to the wooden barrels, &c., or the erdinary cloth grain sacks. The in conclusion, would unanimously recom- mend to the Department the propriety of adopting the new pattern military bat presented by the Gutta Percha Company. It is believed that this hat, im addition to being ieee ogee) ia mueb better adapted to frontier rvice than the cap at present in use.
