‘Temperance in Poughkeepsie. Povouxgersiz, May 10, 1855. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEGALD. I noticed the following In the Heraup of May 9:— A meeting of the friends of the liquor law was held in Poughkeepsie last week, which broke up ia a row, aud the final organization of two meetings. I would simply state, sir, that you have been misin. formed. The facts of the case are these:—A meeting was held, and through the influence of a whig clique, led on by a defeated candidate for the Assembly, an obnoxious individual was placed in the chair. A motion was af Yerwards made to dissolve the meeting, which was car- ried by only one dissenting vote. The meeting was thea re-organized, with another person in the chair, and all passed off harmoniously, A large and enthurisstic meeting was held at the same place this week. By g this correction, you will oblige the friends of a prohibitory liquor law in this viaialty and your onedi. t rervant, C. AUGUSTUS HAVILAND. The Fire in Vesey Strect. TO THE BDITOR OF THE HERALD. Is your morning paper of the 11th inst, you state the fire st Nos 58 and 60 Vesey street originated in my first floor. It is an error, as we clo:e our place at aix o'clock, and persons early on the spot said it was in the basement, and others said on the third floor. 1 am certain it did not originate in my place.
