IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY NEWS KXTKACTS OF 4 LETTER PROM GENERAL ALVAREZ- GOLD M'N&3— PLACER DIGGINGS 180 MIL¥S * OM ACAPULCO. {Correspondence of the New Orleans D-ita.] Acapcico, April 5, 1855. When the news reached the city of Mexico that Gen- eral Alvarez had beseiged Chi!pancivgo, Santa Anna, in pore, t the head of two thousand troops, s6ft the city for Yguala. The day after bis arrival, the 24 of March, he suddenly commenceia retrograce march, owing to despatches received requiring his immediate return, It is reported that General Viilareal, the head of 500 men of the Alvarez party, has had an ecyagement at Moralia with the government forces under the com- mand of José Santa Anna, son of his Serene Highness. Soni put to flight, with the loss of 100 horses, 300 muskets, some munitions and money. General Degoliado, commander of the Alvarez forces in the States of Michoacan and Guadalsjara, has made an important alteration in the plan of Ayutla, which has ven entire satisfaction to the conzervative party, reby carrying with it a majority of the personal adherents of ‘Santa Anna. Atvarez having accepted the modification, it is supposed the revolution will make more rapid advancement. The following is @ translation of some extractsof a letter received by a friend, {rom General Alvarez, who hes kindly permitted me to maie them public, and from which it will be seen the old chie(tain assigns a very good reason for raising his siege on Chilpanciago:— Texca, March 25, 1855. My Estrexxp Sm AND APPRECIABLE FRievD:—Immense business with which I have been surrounded, has prevent- ed my beiag able to answer in due time your last eatima- ble letter, as I should have desired; but your kindness is so great you will permit meto ¢o so now, dispensing with my involuntary silence. Iam highly delighted to find that the cause of libert; which we, the people of the South, cefend, is so fearle: ly advocated by tbe newspapers in the United States—a country in which the freedom of the press is not ealy tolerated but appreciated; and { am snuch gratified with the bonoravie mention of my nawie, Soould you meet any of toe gentiemen, I pray yon will raturn totaem my kindest regards of expression, with an assurance that my whole object 1s the freedomof my country, without the aspiration to presidential or other honors, My cear friend, the tuking of Chilpancingo would and could have been the consequent resul; of my hav- ing captured the cities of Chilapa, Flacotepec aud Telo- I , were it not that | was adoressed by the citizens to spare theic hves and property; 1 therefore withdrew, and am arravging a new plan of operation, which will be decisive in its results, and, at the same time, be the saving of a great effusion of blood. ‘This apparent retreat vie be looked upon by my ene- mies in acifferent light. They canoot, however, deay the advantage as gained by ms in the capturing of the cities aa named, and by which have not oaly my forces been augmented, but I have taken irom the enemy eight hundred muskets, six pieces of artillery, munitions, and a large amount of money; thus alone bave more than reabzed the object of my expedition, the rest being left to the devoiving of my plan, in which I entsrtaia the idea of not losing a single action or battle, after which I will march into the city of the Montezumas, not as a Dictator, but as a soldier who haa fought for his country’s freedom. * - bd ® ° * Permit me to subscribe myself your true friend and wervant, JOHN ALVERI As General Alverez was leaving Ruens V February 22d, a force of six hundred iavcers appearing ia sight, Generals Thonias and Francisco Moreno, wao were riding some two huudred yards in advance of their troops, were ordered to charge them. Francisco Morono, stpposing his battalion wae close enough to support him, charged, was wounded in the lrg, and taxen prisoner before his troops sucteeded im routing the lancers. He was car- ried to Chilpancingo, on wh:ch Gen. Pallacios proposed to exchange him tor Gen. Zuallago snd a priest, p.ison- ers in the hano« of Alvarez, Vending chese arrange- ments, Gen. Moreno was, on the moraing of March L0th, without any previous notice, taken out to tlie Yiaza, and there intormed by Fallacios that he woul: have him shot. On his asking, permission was granwed him to address the troops, abd buriug his breast, displayed to them two wouncs received at Caurabusco The govern- or, finding that if Gereral Moreno contioned hia ad- dress bis command would revolt, in the middle of a sen- vence he was shot dead His death bas been rumored for some days past, but the anihentic information was only received on the 6th April. On the 2sth March, as Gen Thoa. Moreno was advancing in the Costa Chica road, with » command of 1,500 mea, he was attecked by a large governwent force who were buscade. The slaughter, as it was hand to hand, was very great on both sides. Tho Santa anua troops succeeded iu cutting off the whole baggage train of mul which were, on the same day, recaptured by ‘Old Al tez,’’ who at the head of 800 of his ludians, had taken a mountain path to intersept their retreat, ia which che government forces were entirely routed, leaving every. thing in the mountains. Thave seen in the bands of Gen, Comonfort s small uantity of gold as received by him trom Senor oa juliam Ysalas, the man who is tbe discoverer of the mine, As for my part, 1 do not doubt the existence of gold in this State; however, a confidential mao has gooe to examine the richness of ‘the diggings. He is an Ame- rican and an old California miner. I will, therefore, by the next mail, be able to write with more confidence than at present, and content myself with placing before you the affidavits of the parties, aa also the conditions upon which Gen. Alvarer consents to their being worked by foreigners. One thing is quite certain—should they prove rich, and I think they will, a saiden change will come over the dormant slumbers of Acapulco. Crry ANp Post oF AcAPCLCO.—On this, the 20th day of March, A. D. 1855, assembled in the office of the Preiest ‘of the District of Acapulco, the following uamed gen- tlemen: Coione! AntonioGomez, Major Dow Julien Yalas, and Mejor P. Flores, who betag duly sworn, the Prefect stated that he had been directea to gbtaic, with a8 mach accuracy as possible, from person’ of character and knowled, as much information could 9¢ derived concerning the discoveries of gold as recently made in the neighborhood of San Francisco, on the river Deloro, in the ferra Calienta, (hot country.) between Ajuachit: lan and Caynca, being in the State of Guerrero. “Don Antonio Gemez states that he has been in the mines, in company with Messrs. Yslas and Flores, now resent, and he is of opinion they would agree with him 4 stating that the gold is found in abundance in the neighbor! of the town of San Fransisco, Deloro, on the banks of the Ora river; and in eome places it yield about three ounces to twenty-five pounds of earth, depth of one foot The distance from Acapulco is about eight days’ march. Major Ys’as not only ratifies all Colonel Gomez has stated, but adds that he is the person who first disco- vered the gold, and that it varies from eighteen to twenty three carats fine. Mejor Flores corroborates tlie foregoing statements, ANTONIO GOMEZ P, FLORES JULIAN YSLAS. Sworn before me, [Official Seai.] M MIRANDU, Prefecto. If these mines, on examination, prove to be even one- sixth as rich as sworn to, I’ think they will be very apt to call the attention of a few Americans to do that which Mexicans cannot or will not attempt—work them. ‘The following translation is a decree which has been submitted to General Alvarez, and will no doubt meet his approval. It is already in force in the mines, as J am in- formed, #8 also that upwards of two hundred Mexicans are at work :— Ri Art. 1. All Mexican citizens and foreigners arriving in the port of Acapulco, with the intention of proceeding to the mines, must report themselves to the prefecto, who will furnish them with the necersary passports. Art. 2. Mining implements of ali ‘‘escriptions, as alao visions, will be permitted to be landed free of all uty. Art. 3. All Mexican citizens and foreigners in the mines will be governed by a supertaventent, whose duty will be to see that each man will be allowet a cortsin pumber of square yards to work, the regulation in this particular being as hberal as po-sible. ‘Art.4. All persons working the mines must pay for said privilege, the one-sixteenth of al! gol! they extrac:, and a duty ‘of one per cent on all gold exported. Art 5. Any person or s caught in toe a'toempt to viclate srt ea shall lay their goid lable to seizure and forfeiture. i Ant. All difficnities or disputes which may arise as to claims, will be amicably rettled by the superin- tendent i" ‘The foregoing appears to be all very reasonable, and, ae I have stated previously, I siall wait ti I Peer xome- 6 before advising parties to come to the placer of Gicenero. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. ’ Suspay, May 13—6 P. M. ‘The money market is beconing more and mors pletho- ric. Every week seems to add to the amount of capital seeking employment. The demand, on the contrary, is gradually becoming loss, The banks manage to keep ap their Lines of discount amidst the general stagnation, but it is only by being little less particular in the class of business paper. It in the easiest thing in the world to hypothecate fancy stock, at limited margins; bat as #pecuiaticn in tock securities ix just now pretty dull, nough of that busivess olfering to employ much capital, An abundance of mosey in this market, for any length of time, urually leads to epeculation, either in stocks or come deserfption of marchan!ise; but such is not the caseat present. There are mo ipdisations Of # moyoment of that wature in anytuing. There is a9 disposition to buy or sell stocks. Holders are looking for | burg will be offered for sale at the Merchants’ Exchange | in this city, om the 24th of July, at 73 P. Very soon the hot | goos fat divideads and high prices, while buyers, believ- ing that lower prices will soon role, hold back and place their money on deposit in some bank. There is a weather will be along, when there will be a thia ning out among business men, There will be almost a universal stampede, Jook sharp after the almighty dollar. Between Schuy- felt safe, and such scenes of anxivty, excitement sud despair have seldom been experienced by any commau- pity years of active pursuit of fortaces under all the revul sions of our commercial history, All that has passed away, and the effect nearly obliterated. Hundreds who have borne im mind the horrors of those days, have 50 managed their affaifs as to cut themselves loose us soon og the bot westher sets im, and give the city a wite berth. This feeling bas had its influence upon busi- ness. We shall be able to see, before the fall busivess commences, how the uropean war works, aud its effect npon financial and commercial matters, It is, thore- fore, safer to pursue a masterly inactivity than to be come involved in mercantile transactions, the end of which cannot be foreseen. In the msantime let us hops that the weather may continue favorable for our crops, and that the harvests msy prove ail the husbaaiman can desire, We must look to our supply of breadsta‘Ts es the means to extricate ourselves from all present or pending difficulties. If our crops fail a second time we shall be worse off than the allies before Sebastopol, The election for directors of the Hartem Railroad Com- pany comes off on Tuesday, the 15th inst , and every stockholder should see that his interost is properly pro- tected. We have seen but one ticket, but take it for granted that there is another in the fleld, The present President has signified bis intention to retain that office only upon certain conditions, However sound his rea. sons may be, it must be admitted that the manner adopt- ed for making them public was in very bad taste, to say the least. It must bave been done without Mr. Biatch- ford’s knowledge or consent. A. H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction sale of stocks and bonds will take place on Monday next, 14th inst., at 12 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. The receipts of the New York Central Railroad Com- pany, in the first four months of the past two years, have been aa follows :— New York Centrat Rarnoap, 1854. 5. Increase. Jenuary...... $535,862 14 66,564 18 + 216,113 40 20,012 98 + $29,277 77 91,393 77 ces 601,905 83 123,075 76 $1,581,859 14 1,844,805 81 303,146 67 This shows an increase of about twenty per cent. Of the receipte in 1854, $763,095 05 was from paxsoagera, and $818,564 09 from freight; and in 1855, of the aggregate, $816,661 72 was from passengers, and $1,108,244 09 from freight. This explodes the idea that the Central does a larger passenger carrying business than a freightiag business. The returns of the Central thus far received this year, show that its business ia no more profitable than that of the Erie, and therefore that ita stock is artifically inflated, and caunot long be suetained at its present level. Either the Central ia too high or the Frie is too low Now, we are mora inclined to admit the first than the ast.
