8 INTERESTING FROM PORTO RICO. (rouble at St, Johns—Revolt of Spanish Troops, déc., die. ‘We have advices from 8 . Johns, Porto Rico, to the 5th inst, It reached St. Thomas in the steamship To- viot, and came thence to us. It appears that on the night of the 13th April the bat- dalion of artillery were stationed in San Cristoval, one of the strongest forts belonging to the fortifications of St. Johns, took possession of the castle, which they held during the night, firing with small arms on the town; they, however, surrendered in the moraing, on condition of thetr sives being spars’, and to the number of three hundred have been divided among other regiments, in the town, without arms. The artillery counted on theas- sistance of another regiment in the place, recently ar- rived from Spain, in which cae the revolt might have @ssumed a more serious aspect The circumstances had occasioned a great deal of excitement. OUB ST. THOMAS CORRESPONDENCE. Sr. Taomas, West Indies, April 20, 1855, Steam and the New York Herali—A Spanish Revolution— False Alarm—Dominican Doings—Fate of the Ben. Franklin and Catharine augusta, dc, Although this is usually rather a dull sort of place, still we get up a periodical excitement, such.as that oc- casioned by the departure of a steamer direct for New York. Only think of it! Although the English steam- ers swarm here once a month, and have literally infested these seas for the last twelve or fifteen years, we, the smartest nation in ail creation, can’t get up & single line in thia direction. There’s something wrong. True, there have been abortive efforts without number, but the parties didn’t goto work right. Where’s Vander- bilt? By the way, bas ‘Live Oak George’ blown off bis steam, and quitted the “shipping mterest’’ forever? I have been so long in foreign parts that really I have quite lost the run of things, end if it wers not for the Hesaip, which luckily tarus up everywhere, a fellow would, upon returning to “the States,’ feel quite Rip Van Wirkleish. Some of us were stirred up the other day by a prospect of a rew in Porto o. We hud sews of a revolt im the garrion at San Juas (the capital), and the varioas con- sus wrote here for the wen-of-war of their respective nations There are a few filibusters hangiog onin hope of some {bing offering in ther line and it was observed they brighicned up prodigt, usly upon reeeiptof this news, In- deed, # couple of them were seea to jump immediately Into a boat, and pull Geoperately off to those long suspeated vensels, the Ben Framsio and Cathar.ae Augusta. Upon this warklise cemeustration, the Consul of her tholic Majesty rushea frantically to the Gover- nor, with @ protest aguinst shove seas pion beiag periuitted to goto sea, (there are three man aud a boy aboard of each ) The autuorities, in their anxiety to preserve the neutrality of De omark, forthwith cruered all the guns at sll the forts to be dounle shotted, and sent a message aboard (be dreadful voosels to the effect, that if they attempted to leave they would be blown out of water, at least such was the report current that even- ing emong the quisnay-s of the colle bouses and bil- liard saloons. It shows, ut least, that tho popular im- prese'cn abzoad, (at least m St. Thomar,) is that any outrege can be commi:tet upon oar citizens and their property with impunity. However, the Porto Rico af- ir proved a fizzle, it vas only a family quarrel be- tween some of the troops and the Goveracr, the former claiming their ciseharge on the ground of heviog per- formed their lawfvl term of eervice. They shut them- selves ce iaa ious: but eing starved out, had to cave in, anc there that Spanish revolution ended There bas also been a similar fuselfunk to the fore- going in the Dominican republic. {t seems a parcel of asses got togethrr and trieo to get up a revolution in favor of the return of resident Baez an exile at = ce, The pronunciados were captured to a maa, & ole thing ended most furcically. So Baez is s' it and howsoever hr may feel, he certaioly looks the character of Scipio A‘ricavus most admira aly. It is row said hers that those troublesome vessels above mentioned, the Ben Franklin fembipterg co deo gusta, are finally to lenve us; snd I have tolerably reason for believing they have been sold to His Mos’ cy rere Highness the Dictator of Mexico, and that they will shortly Jeave tor the Pscific, being destined, doubtless, for thé blockade of Acapulco. They are fine ships, with 8 formidable armament +11 an immense awmoant of mi litary stores, ano we fear their srrival out yonder wil be a terrible blow to alvarez and the federsl'sts, You may regard the Cestinstion of the vessels as certain, thoogh it little nncertaia to whom they will belon; upon ikeir arrival—San‘a Acoa or Alvarez From all account: the former may well cry out--‘‘Help me Cas us, or I eink |” NEWSPAPER ACCOUNTS.
