2 FINANC D a ae MONEY MAR ‘Weowespay, J Cale M. ‘There was a better feeling in the stock market to day. Reading and Erie Railroad stocks continue the favorites, at improving prices. There was e little more activity te-day in State stocks and railroad bonds, but prices do mot show any material alteration. At the first board, New Jersey Zinc advanced 3 per cent; Nicaragua ‘Pranait, 4; Cumberland, };; New York Central Railroad, 34; Erie Railroad, 34; Harlem, 1; Reading Railroad, 34; Michigan Centra) RatJroad, ; Michigan Southern Rail- read, , Hudson River Railroad declined 5 per cent; Panama Railroad, 34; Galena and Chicago Railroad, 4; @leveland and Toledo Railroad, \{. The law proceedings ‘against certain directors and managers of the Nicaragua ‘Transit Company have terminated just as we antici- pated, and the psrties concerned hava not secomplished the object aimed at. The market price of the stock has nobvaried more than a fraction during the arguments, ee those who sold stock, with the impression that a ald be created, and lower prices rule, have sim- ay mete mistake, Panama Railroad stock is selling again below par. The extravagant statements made upen the opening of this road, regarding its future earn- ings, have not thus far been realized, and probably will not be. The stock advanced largely and rapidly, in an- ticipation of immense receipts; and it was our opinion at that time,-that a more favorable time to realize would Bet soon eceur again. ‘The following sales of bonds were made at auction to- 10,000 New Orleans Cit; 2,000 Great Western (Ill.) We understand the reasons for preferring the drafts drawn from the 9th to 16th March, are, that parties who came forward to 2'1 the house in resuming business, by buying their ¢2- ebange and giving them money for same, under such cir- e@umstances, areentitled to considerations which those he came in subsequently, and after the house had re- sumed, and purchased in the regular course of business, are not. In the Senate of this State Mr. Spencer, of the Bank Committee, read a note from E. J. The error is im showing a deficit of more than $130,000 in the cas! item of its assets, whereas a correct statement shows a surplus of more than twenty-one thousand dollars. All these advances were made on the growing produce of the Consolidated Fund. There were also advanced on Exchequer bills two sums of £1,760,000 and £800,450. All these amounts were paid off during the year, except £235,000, which remained undischarged in the hands of the Bank on the 5th of January last. The balances issued for the pay- ment of dividends due and not demanded, ani‘for the payment of lottery prizes or benefits not claimed, amour ted as follows, viz :—On the 5th of April, 1854, to £1,099,209, of which £990,953 was advanced to govern- ment; on the 5th of July to £1,079,164, of which £979,- 164 was advanced to government; on the 10th of October to £1,013,298, of which £913,203 was advanced to gov- ernment; and on the Sth of January, 1855, £1,066,081, of which £013,208 (the same sum as in the preceding quarter) was advanced to the government. The sums left in the Bank of England consequently amounted on the above quarter days to £108,256, £100,000, £100,000, and £152,788, respectively. An account of the receipt and expenditure of the sum of £2,794,722 during the year 1854 by the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt, shows that the greater portion of the receipts acerued from ‘cash received at sundry times from the Exchequer,” and that nearly all of this cash, or £2,771,597, was expended in the purchase of Ex- chequer bills. The rest of the receipts were appropriat- ed to the purchase of £2,974 Consols, and £24,921 Re- @uced Annuities Consolidated. A supplementary return states that on the 16th of February, 1854, Mr. Gladstone. the Chancellor of the Exchequer, applied to the Bank for advances on Exchequer bills of sush sums as should not Teave a larger amount of the said bills in the hands of the Governor of the Bank than £1,000,000; and that on the 8th of June, 1854, a similar advance was requested to the amount of £750,000. Both requests were com" plied with by the Court of Directors of the Bank of Eng- land. Stock Exchange. Wanymspay, April 11,1865, 2 sha Erie RR. 30 $10,000 Ind.
