2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. eo MONEY MARKET. Wepnespay, April 11—6 P. M. ‘There was a better feeling in the stock market to-day. Reading and Erie Railroad stocks continue the favorites, ‘at improving prices. There was «little more activity to-day in State stocks and railroad bonds, but prices do mot show any material alteration. At the first board, New Jersey Zinc advanced \ per cent; Nicaragua ‘Pransit, 4; Cumberland, 3s; New York Central Railroad, 4; Brie Railroad, }¢; Harlem, }¢; Reading Railroad, 34; Michigan Central Ravroad, {; Michigan Southern Rail- read, X. Hudson River Railroad declined 54 per cent; Panama Railroad, 3; Galena and Chicago Railroad, 14; Gleveland and Toledo Railroad, {. The law proceedings against certain directors and managers of the Nicaragua Transit Company have terminated just as we antici- pated, and the porties concerned havanot accomplished Seo ahjest almed 5 The market price of the stock has netvaried more than a fraction during the arguments, ‘and those who sold stock, with the impression that a panie would be created, and lower prices rule, have sim- ply made a mistake. Panama Railroad stock is selling again below par. The extravagant statements made upen the opening of this road, regarding its future earn- ings, have not thus far been realized, and probably will not be. The stock advanced largely and rapidly, in an- ticipation of immense receipts; and it was our opinion at that time, that a more favorable time to realize would not soon eceur again. We understand the ‘reasons for preferring the drafts drawn from the 9th to 16th March, are, that parties who came forward to :'4 the house in resuming business, by buying their 22. ehange and giving them money for same, under such cir- @umstances, areentitled to considerations which those whe came in subsequently, and after the house had re- gamed, and purchased in the regular course of business, are not. Holders of drafts should retain them and not wend them;to Sen Francisco, forall the fands of the firm fer their liquidation will be7placed in the hands of the assignee here. ‘The steamship Asia, from Boston for Liverpool, to-day, carried out $690,000 in American gold, and £125 in Eng- lish silver. ‘The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, ‘Washington, on the 9th inst., were:— For the redemption of stock. + $28,911 37 Fer paying Treasury debts. 1,166 02 For tha Customs.. 657 For‘the War Depart 184,794 52 Fer repaying in the War 16,364 60 Fer the Navy De; 117,852 75 For the Interior renee a 1,587 66 The notes of the suspended free banks of Iinois are mow redeemea at par by the Auditor of that State; he having, in compliance with the law, sold the ae which were pledged for security of the notes, Thi pended bank notes of Wisconsin are also, iiainia 5 in the same way. ‘The gales of lands of the Illinois Central Railroad Com- pany from the 12th of February to the Ist inst., were:— Pre emption Jands, acres Mortgage lands, acres, Free lands, acres... In the Senate of this State Mr. Spencer, of the Bank Committee, read a note from E. J. Brown, Esa., Presi- dent of the Manbattan Savings Institution of this city, stating that an error exists in the report of the Bank Committee on Savings Banks, which doos great injustice to the institution over which he presides. The error is im showing a deficit of more than $130,000 in the cash item of its assets, whereas a correct statement shows a surplus of more than twenty-one thousand dollars. Mr. Spencer read the following table showing the true con- dition of the bank: — Loans ow bonds and mortgages. seyee $787,229 61 Btocks and bonds owned by the i Leans on call, $136,020 87 66,383 64— 222 900 51 seeeeeey $1,089,684 02 068,669 96 1064 06—$1,09,634 02 ‘The Commercial Bank of ns as declared a @ividend of four and one-half percent. [he Suffolk In- surance Company of Boston has declared » dividend of four per cent, payable on demand. The Cochituate Fire Jos urance Company a semi-annual dividend of four per eent. ‘The receipts of the Chicago, Burlington and Quiscy Railroad Company for the months of January and Feb- ruary, 1855, amounted to $41,023 51, against $28,732 81 for the same time last year. It will be remembered that ‘the road was entirely closed by snow from January 20 to February 27, while from the 7th to the 13th of February it was only operated 13 miles of its length. From the 984 to the 27th of February, likewise, no trains run upon the road. A comparison of the aggregate movement in the lead- ng departments of the banks of Boston, during each of the past three weoks, exhibits the anaexed results: — “ee or Bostos. April 2. The gross receipts of the Southern Michigan and North- ¢ 1p Indiana Railrond Company for the firat three months im each of the past two years, have been as follows:— Micmaax Sovrumas ax Norturns Ieptaxa RarnoAn. 1855. ° $88, 325 92 196, TT 00 Total.....seeeeee $122,916 37 Increase in 1855. But for the obatrac' ry, the increase in receipts that month would have been much greater. ‘The following is a description of counterfeit fives on the Bank of Commerce, Boston, which have recently been put in circulation:—The vignetté consists of a fe- male, the Goddess of Liberty, holdin; pear, on which liberty cap is placed, in her right hand points to a seroll on which the words “, and Comme: ce’ are inreribed. All these advances were made on the growing produce of the Consolidated Fund. There were also advanced on Exchequer bills two sums of £1,760,000 and £300,450. All these amounts were paid off during the year, except £235,900, which remained undischarged Jn the hands of the Bank on the 5th of January last. The balances issued for the pay- ment of dividends due and not demanded, ani‘for the payment of lottery prizes or benefits not claimed, amourted as follows, viz :—On the 5th of April, 1854, to £1,099,209, of which £990,953 was advanced to govern- ment; on the Sth of July to £1,079,164, of which £979,- 164 was advanced to government; on the 10th of October to £1,013,203, of which £913,203 was advanced to gov- ernment; and on the 5th of January, 1855, £1,066,061, of which £013,203 (the same sum as in the preceding quarter) was advanced tothe government. The sums left in the Bank of England consequently amounted on the above quarter days to £108,256, £100,000, £100,000, and £152,788, respectively. Am account of the receipt and expenditure of the sum of £2,794,722 during the year 1854 by the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt, shows that the greater portion of the receipts acerued from ‘cash received at sundry times from the Exchequer,” and that nearly all of this cash, or £2,771,597, was expended in the purchase of Ex- chequer bills, ‘The rest of the receipts were appropriat- ed to the purchase of £2,974 Consols, and £24,921 Re- duced Annuities Consolidated. A supplementary return states that on the 16th of February, 1854, Mr. Gladstone. the Chancellor of the Exchequer, applied to the Bank for advances on Exchequer bills of sush sums as should not leave a larger amount of the said bills in the hands of the Governor of the Bank than £1,000,000; and that on the 8th of June, 1854, a similar advance was requested to the amount of £750,000. Both requests were com" plied with by the Court of Directors of the Bank of Eng- land. Stock Exchange. Waowmpay, April 11, 1865, $10,000 Ind.
