NO, 24. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ' MONEY MARKET, ‘Wepvgspay, Jan. 24—6 P. M. At the opening this morning lower prices ruled, particularly for railroad fancies, The market was active, but the demand sppears to come entirely from aes in the street, and the transactions are ly on time, buyers’ option. At the first board, Indians 6's declined } per cent; Virginia 6’s, 1; New York Central Railroad, }; Erie Railrosd, 4; Reading Railroad, }; Hodson River Railroad, 4; Michigan Southern Railroad, 1; Panama Railroad, 4. Missouri 6’s advanced 4 per cent; Iilinois Bonds, 3; Nicaragus Transit, 2; Cumberland Coal, 2; Diioois Central Railroad, }. The movement in Nicaragua Transit to-day was strong and decided. ‘The purchases were unasually large and in large Jote. Cumberland continues very firm. Evie is with much difficulty sustained. The bell wether of the flock of speculators has been filled up, and no longer leads the way so confidently. The amount of stock in the market is daily increasing, and any clique that may attempt to get up a corner in such @ fancy must have more capital than brains. At the second board the market was better for stocks generally. Nicaragua went up j per cent; Cumberland Co., }; New York Central Railroad, }; Virginia 6’s, 4; Ilinois Bonds, 3; Michigan South- erm Railroad, 1. Erie Railroad fell off 2 per cent; Reading Railroad, 3; Diinois Central Railroad, 2. The largest commission brokers in the street have halfa dozen orders to sell cash stock where they have one to boy. This shows tha’ current prices are bringing stocks into the market from the hands ef outsiders, The advance recently experienced has given outside holders @ good opportunity to realize, and ag mostof them are much cramped in their finances, it is utterly out of the question for them to come in again as purchasers for a long time. The brokers who have been speculating for a rise are full , fetocke, and if anything should occur requiring ‘them to sell, we should have a regular smaah among the fancies. Those who are working the hardest to sustain the market are large holders of railroad bonds and managers of railroad companies which bave jost negotiated loans. I: is of vital importance to them that, for a time, prices should be sustained. Tne loans reported to have been made are in avery dcubtful state. They are all at loose ends, andthe probability is, that they will not be closed up #0 favorably as anticipated. Witham the past three weeks railroad bonds amounting to about ‘twelve millions of dollars have been created, This ieto much added to tne joad the public have to carry, and it must prove very burdensome. Ths recent revuleion was caused by the creation of rail- 30ad bords to an extent beyond tne ability of the eountry to carry; and in the face of such deliaquen- ey and bankruptcy we find the mauufactare going 0p as rapidly ssever. The new boads come from vailzoud compenies which are notoriously insolvent or upprodactive, and it will not be very difficalt to anticipate the result. The following extract from the report just made by the Eagineer of the State of New York relative to railroads, showa that ulti- mately the whole batch must become barkrupt:— The reports of the present year show an increased ex- venee in operating the roads over that of the preceding year, An examination of the reportéof a muinber of rairoads in New England and elsewhere, shows for the last five years an annual increase in their cost of from two to five per cent per annum—an increase in their re- ceipts of from twelve to twenty percent, and an increase tm their expenses of from twenty to forty per cent per annum. ‘The per cent of current expenses, according to thie, ebows ao increase double that of the increase ww receipts. A‘ this rate, it will not reqaire a very great hand a! figures to tell how long tuey can con- tinue in operation. 1; has been our belief for a long time that every railroad in she country mas? uiti- mutely become insolvent, and the State Engineer eon firms it. The closing prices for ateriing ex ebange today was 8) a 9{ per cont premium, and drawere were firm at these rates. The Ocean Steam Navigation Company (Bremea Ime) bave declared a semi-annual dividead of tive yer cent. The Manhatvian Gas Light Company, a dividend of two dollars per share on the full, and one dollar eighty-one and 4 naif per cent on the serip stock. ‘Pue Leather Manalacinrers’ Bauk has declared a ‘semi-annual dividend of five per cent, payable on the Ast of Febroary. The transfer books of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad Company having been placed in the American Exchange Bank on Wedaesday, the 24th imst., will remain open during the remainder of the week, when they will be closed uatil the 24 day of Febrosry next. ‘The City Comptroller gives notice that the fourth imstalment ot building loan stock No. 2, dae on the ‘st of February, will be paid at his office, oo tha day, after which interest on the joan will cease. It may, snd doubtless will, succeed ata dw tance, where their miamanegement and wild and useless extravagance is unknown; bot here it can- cot, and the only reason why their course excites no comment is because & very small amount of their stock is held in this city. That the stock ought to have been * paying coe, no ose can doubt; bat taat itever will be uncer its present system of man agement, is doubtfal, to say the least of it, if we jaage of the fotare from its past oisiory, from whisb we find that the managers have sep ood out of thet legitimate path and entered into rpecuistcos for- ‘ eign from the intentions of the or'gica! projectora of woe rus), ercumulaicg whereby» lage Iostog reserving it with the paper containing | NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1855. debt, which has been carried at extravagant rates until it beeame too troublesome, and then funded in stocks or bonds at enormous sacrifices, which was no sooner done than some other speculation was sought after, another debt created, with alike re. sult. The result of all this has been to doable their capital debt within nine years, and daring that time making but two (we believe)cash dividends and earn. ing, it is generally believed, not one. The unfortunate admission by the company that. these expenditares are never to cease 8) long as the business of the road require it, is an alarming policy in view of the above facts, which go to prove that the interests of the stockholders are to be sacrificed to carry out the extravagant policy of the managers. We find the entire cost of the road to be very nearly twenty millions of dollars. It will be re- membered that this is taken from their own report It will be as well to remember, at the same time, however, that in a report some years back an item, amounting to a million of dollars, was sup pressed, and afterwards the policy of it defended on the ground of expeiiency. Their floating debt is over one million and a hal’. We also find that they have paid over two hundred and fifty thousand dol- lave exorbitant interest, aud this, too, while their cash receipta were reported to have been nearly one Dundred thousand dollars per week. We find au item of seven bundred and fifty thousand dollars among their asseta noted as‘‘debta due the com Fany,” on which they suppose a logs of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. No mention is made as to how this large debt was contracted, by whom or when. As there are other debta dae the company from their ‘(current business,” it is presumable this ‘was made in some other way. The company, with all its boastings, large earnings, as spread before the public, have been compelled to tax the poor stock- holders by forcing them to take ten per cent ad- ditional stock, at par, for their dividend; or, in other words, compelling them to pay ther own divi- dends. It is not ecen, in view of these fasta, how the company can bosst of their flourishing con- dition. Too much pains appear to have been taken to cover up important items of expenditures, in order to blazon forth their large gross earnings. A bill has been introduced into the Legislature of Pennsylvania to repeal the 47th section of the bank act of April 16, 1850, which requires banks east of the mountains, under a penaity of two mills per dollar of their average circulation, to keep their notes at par in Philadelphia, and those west of the mountains at Pittsburg. The object of the section is t2 prohibit the interior banks from trafficing in their own bills through an agent, where the bills are | in circulation and bought up by the bank’s own unde st @ discount. The Boston Journa! of the 23d"instant says: — The bonds of the Rutland and Burlington Railroad are, attracting the most attention; 62)¢ waa bid for frat mortgage, 313; for second, and 12 for thirds, but no sellers appeared. The movement towards an amicable arrangement between the first and second mortgage in teresta progresses favorably, aad will undoubtedly be suc- cessful. It is believed that the net earnings of the sent year will be sufficient to pay interest on both and second mot the product will mortgage. It should be remembered that the entire amount of the three mortgages ia but $4,200,000, viz., $1,800,006 first, $1,200,000 second, and $1,200,000 third, that the road has but to earn $294,000 net to pay interest on the whole. Within three years the Rutland road in the increase of traffic should earn more * than enough to pay interest on its entire indebtedness. ct ~ in speculative stocks were quite large jay Vermont Central was firm at 'y sivance ; nd Massachusetts went up to 15; Ogdensburg Rutland to 434. In mining stocks there is ion. Poltec is the favorite, aud has advanced , Algomah has just commenced also, and went up ne day, while Winthrop, Dana, Ripley and others begin to attract attention. Isle Royale is in re- quest at bid, but the stock has eutsoaly become very ‘opper Fal firm at 45. In land stocks toad: nt with but little excitement. Waverley and Edgeworth are most prominent. The Comptroller of this State has given notice that he wiil pay $884 25 upon the surrender of each | 1,000 bond of the Hadson and Berkshire Company, isened az der the act of 1847, to relay the track. A movement is now on foot for building another vet of locks on the Welland canal. The Board of Pablic Works of Caneda are seeking information from shippers on this side, upon which to base an opinion aa to the size of the ealarged locks. The locks should be capable of passing propellers of the largest capscity that mavigate the upper lakes, a: least. The business of the canal will increase in proportion to its size and capacity. The Weatebes'er Jeffersonian says that the West chester and Philadelphia (direct) Rellroad Compw ny have been offered a million of dollars for their road as it now stands, by s company from abroad— from New York, it is said.
