ANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Pee ae MONEY MARKET. Sunvay, Jan. 21—6 P. M. |The week Just closed has been rather a quiet one financial and commercial affairs. We have had new failure to record among our business men, d the reports which have reached us by telegraph suspensions in other cities, have not had much ef- ct, and have apparently soon passed away from Public mind. It is our opinion that we shall anti to receive for some weeks reports of fail. from the South and Weet, from the East, and within our own limits, The revalsion 110 Sp turpentine 620 $14,017 Tobacco, Ibs 1,976 407 Tallow. ....19,448 2,546 Guano, tons, 4,509 CORK. $25,684 Staves, No..5,000 $376 ee 600 250 BRISTOL, Rosin, bbls,. 520 $971 Staves, No..4,000 greater. It is necessary that these insolvent | sg, turpentine roy rns should all be brought out, and that credits be sufficies tly cont-acted to compel all those have no other basis to break, and leave more ‘m for those who have done business legitimately m actual paid in capital. We are ins fair way closing up those houses which have been specu- bg in all the bubbles of the day, and have exist- H for a» long time upon the eredit of former days fs absolutely necessary that occasionally a should oceur to purify the commercial , and to preserve the magses in a healthy A few years of speculation leads al jes into all sorts of extravagance, not only in vablic expenditures, but in individual expenses, in- credits, and creates in every department of ado an artificial state of things. Proeperity may ppear abundant and permanent. every branch of industry, high wages may for any déscription of labor, and ali the evi- nces of growing wealth and strength appear sound 4 substantial; but we know such is not the fact. fe know that under the surface of all this bright ex- rior the seeds of disolution are engendering; that elements of decay and diaruption are at work, ady to buret and spread desolation and despair bere @ short time before ail was sunshine and con- dence. The extent of the convulsion is regalated the length of time the causes have been op ating, and the natare of these causes. Fortunately speculations of the past four or five years—those hich have been the direct cause of the present em- . nts and bankruptcies, were confined to the matruction of public works of vast importance to he country at large, to the expenditure of vast of money in opening communications with and remote sections, and giving a wider field better ecope for the agricultural indastry of the fest. These works still remain, and are of immense in developing our interna) resources; but the lity with which they were create], and enormous system of purpose of aiding in their construction, were o much for the basis upon which it rested, and the tire fabric tumbled d2wa with a shock that shook very foundation of this great interest of the ountry. Fora time, the embarrassments of several the leading railroad lines threatened to plunge intoall the horrors of bankeuptcy. By sharp ciering aud forbearance of creditors they have temporarily relieved, and it depends upon fu- management whether simnlacscenesand difficul- may not sgain occur. This railroad mania was carried on 0 long, snd to sach an ex’ent, that few pdividuals of means escaped. All were more or involved, and those who got too far beyond their h have been swaliowed up in the general de- . There sre many still straggling amidet the lwreck of matter and the depreciation of railroad s9- ities, catching at strawe; but we fear they can- ot keep their hesds above water mach longer. Un- atl the victims have been sacrificed —antil the mmunity is released from the pressure frem sach 1a source—it will be useless to look for permanent ef. We may bave periods of apparent ease—for time the stringency may ba reduced—but if the ‘very germs of the disease are not thoroughly eradi ested, it will retarn in full force, and bring with it all the dangers of a relapse. There is a decided improvemert in the movey market. The suyply of capital corresponds more with the demand, and rates are gradually giving way. The accumulation of specie compels the ‘banks to extend their loans, either on call or for short business paper, and there ia evidently more ease among all classes. From Europe the advices continus favorable; but so long as the war continues there will be danger of sudden and disagreeable changes. The relief in our local money matters should not induce expansion, for we know not the /moment when another contraction may commence, The amount of specio exported from this district Jast week was $18,815 81.
