N & MAPES, Proprietor. HE SMITHSONIAN HOUSE, BROADWAY, CORNER of Houston street, on the same block with the Me- tropolitan Hotel and Niblo’s Garden, and opposite St. Thomas’ church, This new hotel, in the heart of Broad- way, will supply a great desideratum to travellers and the public ia general—superior accommodations in the best quarter of the city, at moderate rates. Rooms 50 cents to $3 a day, according to location, &e. ; but the higher priced apartments, when occupied to their capa- city, ranging trom 60 cents to $150 aday cach person, All ‘single lodgings 50 cents to $Leach. The prosent Smithsonian, located at 604 Broadway, three doors below Housten street, was opened in August last, aud such found to be the public appreciat on of the enterprise, that it was at once developed that larger accommodations were necessary to supply the pudlic demand. The house therefore, is undergoing enlargement by the addition of two spacious and new buileings aqjoining and extending to Houston street, enlarging the establishment to three times its present capacity, and affording accommoda- tions for about four hundred gueats, containing also suites for families. © Smitheonian takes its title from the institution of the same name established by Congress in further ance of the will of James Smithson, of Hogland, who be- jueathed his property to the United States to found at Washington an establishment for the increase ani dif. fusion of knowledge among men. The title of my house was selected, therefore, as contributive to the pecpetual recognition by the American mind of that great. pria- ciple which is the basis of our free inatitations—the ia- telligence and education of th . The teature of « hotel on the European plan, for ladies as well as gentlemen, whieh I deem, to some extent, a peculiarity in my enterprise, and which has met with marked favor, will be continued; and was adopted origi- nally both becanse I conceived that the women of this age, when woman's ight approach rapidly to culmination, should not be debarred from that species of hotel accom- modation which the men have found convenient, and that the patronage of my countrywomen and their say would ada to the respecta dility of tay enterprise. at the same time let it be understood that this means what is saidjand no more; and under it lurks no invitation to the vicious, who will find here ro accommotation. ‘The house will be thoroughly heated by steam pipes of the moxt ap- proved construction, securing thus a most pleasant at- moephére, and obviating every danger of fire, the fire apparatus being located of the premises and under ground, the arrangement being such: that each ocsupant, y the turn of & screw, may let on or shut off the heat} and to obviate every possible cause of alarm from fire ot otherwise, abundant modes of egress are provided. The first floor on Houston street has been arranged to accom- modate the aged, or others disinclined to go up stairs. Every room has & marble Croton basin, bella, and gas. There will be a bathing saloon, with separate baths for ladies. The dining saloon will be 26 by 100 feet on the first floor on Broadway, with private dining rooms ad- joining, and meals furnished as ordered at prizes graded to suit the convenience of those inslined to econo ny, 48 ti well as the tastes of those more extravagant, The fur- niture a: jpoitments will be arranged more for con- venience and comfort than mere show, a prominent tdea being without much expenditure for mere extravagant appursenances to furnish hotel accommodations in this most desirable lozality with every substaatial comfort, and all necessary rogard for the taste and refineme it of the people. In conclusion, I will add that I am a native born American and New Yorker, and as such, while cognivin g world-wide Catholicity of that besutiful pri ciple in our ever to be perpetual Constitution, Which welcomes all nations to its protection, and the peculiar applicability of that principle to a hovel in this cosmpo- litan city, fam aware of my especial responsibility, when I pledge to my countrywomen aad countrymen, of the United States in particular, and to the outside world in general, that the establishment shall not be surpassed for the reapectability, decorum, order, neatness, atten- tion and comfort, with which It shall be conducted. necessary works to adapt the new buildings to the pur- poses designed are in a state o/ rapid forwardness, and will be completed in February, of which due notice will be given; and in the meantime the accommodations of the present Smithsonian will not be interfered with. and my frienis and ‘patrons are iavited to continue their favors as heretofore.
