B BRANDRETH, Dr. Hunter on Diseases of the Throat and Lungs —To the Editor of the New York Herald—Sir—The encouragement I have received from the press, in my efforts to bring about a reform in the treatment of the most prevalent and fatal class of maladies incident to this climate, and the grati{ying recoguition of ny labors, both Oe press and the profession, induce me to be- lieve that a series of popular articles on the nature, causes and treatment of diseases of the throat and lungs, comprising catarrh, sore throat, laryngttis, bronchitis, astbina and consumption, will not be unappreciated by your readers, ‘To me it seems a duty the physician owes to the cause of humanity, no less than to nis own pro- fessional character, to diffuse more generally amor maas of the people'a knowledge of the causes of di and their most appr 1 remediie¢s—particularly #0 in regard to those alec hich I propose to discuss in wy letters: for in o 18 of dir are the afflicted so liable to be mad: victims of ignorant and seltish em- oes or drug vendiog speculations, as in those alfect- ing the orgaus of respirations and yet, in no class of dis- easen is the wrong, the cruel deception of the empiric, #0 aggravated, so inexcusable. The lawentaole failure our profession to arrest the progress of these diseases to the present time, fills (he mind of the sufferer with fore- bodinge of ill, and apprehensions of inevitable fatality. Every offer’ of reef is, therefore, grasped at with the avidity of a drowning man; aud the wretch is not more to he deprecated, who would huld out a straw to rave the one trom drowning, thao is h the other hand, who speculates in the of his fel- lows, in the vending o! a nostrum for the paltry con- sideration of lucre. We all know to what an aiarming exteut this practice of quackery, in the saie of patent medicines, has hitherto prom Sy and still prevails— how numerous are its victims, and how fatal its conse- quences, Lisease goes on eating its way into the citadel of life, unchecked by any legitimate or effectual means; while the victim is amused with a variety of remedies, ignorant of the nature of his real malady, and more ig- norant #till of the qualities of the preteaded remedy on which he hangs tule hopes for life. T have thus plaialy stated the evil; 1 come now to search out the parties at fault, and the remedy. In cases of consumption the mediewl practitioner bas too long been accustomed to treat with neglect tbe catarrh, sore throat, or the slight bronchitis, which mark the early stages of this malady: and when, through such oh ody the lungs have vecome stuffed with tubere! to shake his head and shrug ois shoulder in ominous token of an inevitable fatal termina- tion. The patient sering the physician despair of nuceens just when he myst requires his aid, flies of to every ignis Jaiuus which presents itself; and thus, in ignorance, nos- trums find sale enly because the people are unacquainted wi b the laws of health, the causes of disease, and the pro- per means of cure. They are abandoned to the mercy of the Uunserupulous, at the ‘very moment when they most re- juire protection, by those who profess to be the cura- ol their bealth and lives. 1et the physician re- Ss move this ignorance, by plain common sense articles in Let them meet the the journals read by tie people. requirements of the times, by diff abroad as shall arm the people against the inhumanity of those who wonld trafic in the health aud lives of their tellows, Let them come out from behind the screen of professional dignity, and talk to their fel- Jow-citivens as man to man—giving them, in every pos- sible manner, correct views on the aubject of health and its best prevervatives [am happy in taking advantage of this opportunity, to seknowledge the caudid and cor- @ial co-operation of my professional brethren, who are either themselves uncer my treatment for Phthisis, or are conducting cases in their practice under my direc- tion—several of whom have had the frany aves wad gen- crosity toavow through the press, the benefit they have observed or experienced, as’ resulting from my treatment by inhalstien. For my own part, I regard the rule of silence so rigidly observed by the profession generally, adverse alike to the'r own interests and the welfare of the community, and ‘more honored in the breach than the observauce '? The subject of the letters whieh rnest and y years. Te not conceive that I do my profession any injustice by giving pabtiity to the results of my research and expe- rience in a matter where thousands of lives may be con- cerned in its free and open discussion. In this belalf [ have labored since my introduction of the treatment into this country, in y, 1851. T have regarded its universal publicity s84 matter of the mort vital im- portance to my suffering fellow-beings. I have ampl. proved in my practice its potency in subduing and cradi- eating pulmonary disease. 1 bave spared neither ex- pense nor toil in disseminating my views and experience on thie peculiar treatment, siopal reputarion uw been, from the first, that it i# destined to fill that ful blank in medieal practice involving the organs of rexpiration—a birnk into which, like an interminable gulf, myriads have sunk before the eyes of their friends, the profess: nd the world. If I have departed ono step trom professional etiquette in coming before the publi¢ as T have dove, through the colamns of the press, Lean only piead ndefence the humavity of my {nten tions, and the importance of my subject. If this will not suffice to sattefy the fastidious, then———. Thia much I have said ny way of introduct on. letter I shall consider the nature, causes and treatment of chronic catarrh, I have the hovor to be your obedi- ent servant, ROBERT HUNTER, M.
