Illi- nois Central bonds sold largely to-day at the im- provement. An offer of 80} per cent was made this morning for asmalilot of the new issue of Erle bonds. This was probably made for effect. Many of the bidders for the new loan have put their bonds im the market for sale. If they can realize a profit, they will make their bids good; if no’, they wil! be ‘wanting when called upon. N. Y. Central Railroad ‘was quite active to-day, and there wero sellers ali ‘wsys—buyer’s and seller's option. The sale of but one was reported at that price, and it was probably a mazk, to fix, if porsible, an advance on the rates at which the loan was taKen. The failure of a large baking houze, doing busi- nese in this city, at the Wes: and in California, was reported this aitirnoon in Wall atreet, just after the depsrtue of the steamship Star of tue West for Nicaragus. Tie amount involved is very heavy, and rai.road entanglements at the West is said to be the cause of the suspension. The report was not generally belicved—at all events, i; did not disturb bali stook #; eculators inuch, or create much egeite- ment in fivavcial circles. Those lands, which settiers would not take as a gift, are now sold at double price to persons whose applications are filed months abead forthem. We have now to remember that these are the refuse Jands of that region; that the 2,600,000 acres held by the Illinois railroad,-are selacted lands, in the best localities, in the heart of a voua- try filling up with the rapidity indicated in turn of the commissioner. In two years the the re- govern: ment bas sold 2,377,994 acres in that region to set- tlers, and the sales in the September quarer were greater than ever. Probably one-fourth of all the Janda s6ld by the government wore in the region of the Ilincia Central read. The whole prodace of that land muet go, next year, to swell the business ofthe road. That is tossy, a region of land, equal to the wnole surface of the State prolific of Con necticut, is brooght under cultivation, tributary t» the Tlinois Central road. Even ifthe road lend of its own, this fact wonld establish i hai no #4 pros, perity.
