Bunce & Brothers, of New York, have recent- ly, and for manifestly selfish and mercensty ends, sot up a very stupid assumption, and are now, in a seeming spirit of most virtuous indignation, doing all in their power to knock it down. The assumption is that the authoress of ‘Fashion and Famine’’—Mrs. Ann 8, Ste. phens—has been reputed to be the authoress of “Hagar, the Martyr.” Now, we have given Bunce & Brothers no reason whatever for assuming any conclusion of the sort: an in looking over the numerous favorable notices ot “Hagar, the ‘tyr,’? which have appeared in the tee lic , we can lind no authority on which to base suchen apprehension. The authoress has, with two ex- ceptions, been stated, in these notices referred to, to be Mrs. Hy Marion Stephens; and these two exceptions were the Boston Times and Transcript, both of which pa spoke of Mrz, Stephens as the Mrs. Stephens, of Boston, and not Mrs. Anz 8. Stephens, of New York, whom, wo aro justified in ssying, neither of the editors alluded to me m their minds at the time they penned their notices, But, supposing the public should confound the names of the two ladies, it is not therefore at all uncertain that Mrs. Avn 8. Stephens would he highly compli- mented the mistak Nay, it is absolutely rea- shnablo that she will, or onght to be; for, if wo mine take not, the book Published ‘by Bunce & Brothers, un- der the title of “Fashion and Famine,’’ has a singular affinity in all respects to one previously and fagitively known as ‘Prisons and Palaces; or Sequel to tne Straw- Girl.” Mrs. Stephons—that is, Mrs. H Marion Stephéns—is no collator, but the authoress of an en- tirely crigioal work, and in this respect would not likely, by parties interested, be willfully placed on the level ol a mere compiler and patcher up of oli and exploded ma- verials; It is, therefore, under the circuuzstances, en- tirely unnecessary and uncalled ae, on the part of Measrs. Bunce & Brothers, to notify the public that Mrs. H. Marion Stephene is not the authoress of ‘Fashion and Famine.’’ at lady has fame enough, independ ently of what she would derive from such a relationship. and in evidence of this we cull from a very numeroyg with all the modern improvements.
