Important Disclosures. STUPENDOUS RAILROAD SCHEME FOR THE CITY OF NEW YORK. Jt appears that we are to have another grand railroad ‘operation in the city of New York, which, in pot of pecalation, will outrival all others, and even throw the great Pacific railway attempt completely in the shade. Certain shrewd and bold adventurers have concocted a plan to fasten upon this city a railroad in Broaiway, another through Grand street from the Williamsburg ferry to the Hoboken ferry, and still another through avenue D, Columbia street and East Broadway. The plan of operation is well laid, the parties interested having engaged subtle tools at Albany, who are now busy in preparing the material for ‘putting through ‘the mill’’ the several bills intended to be presented dur- ing the present session of the Legislature. It is well known that there isa class of men in this community who are open to any chance or adventure for makixg money, and who for the past few years have ‘been lurking about our City Hall, engaged in the Jauda- ble pursuit of securing railroad grants, ferry franchises, and all kinds of fat jobs. Among these a clique has been formed, whose sole object it is to obtain grants simi- Jar to that given to a company to lay rails in certain streets in the citios of Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Bush- wisk, passed June 29, 1883. This clique is made up of three distinct interests, and way be classified as follows:—First, the Broadway Com- pany; second, the Grand Streets Company; third, the Avenue D and East Broadway Company. These three in- ‘Yerests all work in common with one another, and when Dlended together form one harmonious whole—the most finisbed and skilful lobby ever formed by a ‘Third Bouse.’’ The members of this accomplished and formidable dobby have been busy for the past six months, and Dave gone into the subject with such nice calcula!ions as to secure the election of certain members of the Legislature, for the express purpose of carrying this etupendous project by acoup d’état—every point has ‘been well guarded, and they feel sanguine of success. ‘This association is made up of all kinds of material; it bas connected with it ex-aldermen, bank directors, contractors, men holding office under the State govern- ment, and also others holding high postions in tils city—in fact, the projectors have tried te secure every available interest that ingenuity and cunning could Gevise; they will be untiring, being well organ- ized, and will endeavor to accomplish the great work which they have laid out for themselves. But we hope that there is sufficient integrity in the Le- gialature to give this subject a blank denial. If, how- ever, none should be found in that body to oppose this species of special legislation, we trust that the people — ‘the “mighty people,” will rise en masse, and assert their rights by forcibly putting a stop to these nefarious and corrupt log-rolling operations. For ourselves, we con- sider it bet a duty to bring these schemes before the public, that they may know what to antiaps” sadhow wapply a remedy to corrupt legisiation. .¢ appears ‘thst these grants will not be pressed until after the ‘United States Senatorship is disposed of, when they will come up in the ‘ollowing order —First, the East Broad- way, Columbia street and Avenue D Company; next in order will be the Grand street line; and last, the Broad- way. The two former, however, may unite in one con- cern, as such an arrangement is now under considera- ‘tion by the parties. The subject of a Broadway railway is to be brought in atthe last moment. These parties are also concerned with others in driving the New Haven Company from the ‘Harlem track, in order that that company may be put ‘to the extremity of making terms with the Second Ave- woe Reliroa’d Company; to use their track instead of the Feurch avenue. Destruction of the Rev. Dr. Burchard’s Church by Fire. ‘The alarm of fire yesterday morning,+0on after 5 o’clock, was caused by a fire being discovered in the Presbyte rap church, situated at 117 West Thirteenth street. The upper portion of the church was first dissovered on fire, and it is supposed was caused by a defect in the hot air heaters or flues. The church was located between a ‘block of dwelling houses, west of the Sixth avenue. Lackily for these buildings, the church stood detached, and a space Of some ten to twelve feet remained on each side of it. The firemen soon applied water, but it burnt too rapidly for them to save it, and they directed their attention to the saving of the adjoining buildings. In ‘ese than an hour the whole of the church was in ruins. In the rear of this church, on Fourteecth street, 's the Protestant Episcopal church of tne Annunciation, Rev. Samuel Seabury. Thie church escaged damage. ‘The Thirteenth street Presbyterian Church was inati- tuted by a colony from the church in Houston street, of the same denomination. It was commenced in the year 1847, in which year also it was dedi The original cont of the church was $25,000, and of the ground oa which it was built $10,000, At first the congregation was quite small, and !t was a matter of serious concern to them bow they would build and pay forthe chure! bot by an earnest effort they at length succeeded accompliching the former, and would soon have beea enabled to pay off what remsined of the debt of the church had not this unfortunate occurresce taken After the church was opened, the Rev, Dr Burckard was called u) officiate as the prssor of the congre- gation, which pos: he has filled for the last eight years with eminent ability, and to the great satisfactioa of his flock, Though small at first, tne congregation nas gradually increased, watil at the time of the baroing every pew hoe occupisd, both on the ground floor a an the galleries. urch was in the Grecian doric style of archi- twcture, avd though it might not compare with some of its more showy neighbers in outward appearance, its Smterior arran; wt) erything that could be derired. Dr. Burchard uély changed his resi dence from West Thirteenth sireet, adjoining the church, to 16 Bank street. In doing #0, he ongiected to remove his library, which was total, troyed by the fire. On this the asurance bad just ran out, and the doctor thereby suffers a loss of some $1,600. The Morary contained som very rare and valuable works. Awong others, an edition of the old fathers, woich can not be replaced in this country. ‘We learn that the pastors anit coi tions of the neighboring churches have come forward in the kindest manver, and offered the use of their lecture rooms to Dr. Burchard’s con; tion, uatil their own edifice would be rebuilt. Dr. Potts aad Dr. Sommers have both mace this proffer, with the assent of their respective eae. A meeting of the trustees of the ehurch was last night, te see what could be done in the way of furnishing @ place of worship for the congrega tion, and to ‘ake measures for the immediate erection of a new building om the site of the old one. Aa the church has now 500 communicants, there will doubtless be no difficulty in raising the requisite eam to com- mence the work. The foliowing is the insurance on the church—Hano yer Insuravuce Co., $6,000; Merchants’ Ioxurance Oo., $6,000; Bt. Nicholas do., $4,000 on the organ, $1,000, om the (‘om Insurance Co, mating in $17,000. Explowon of a Steam Boiler. TRE EXGINEER SERIOUSLY INJURED-—MIRACULOUS EACAPE OF THE RESIDENT? OF THE ADJOINING BUILDINGS. A nteam boiler exploded yesterday morning about 634 @ clock, at the carpenter’s shop of James Stephens, No 90 Went Twenty-first «treet. it appears that Jame, Duna, the engineer, had started the fires as arual, prem te cummencing work, and after doing so he etepped outside the building, leaving no one to attend the fires. The firet apnual ball of the New London City Guards came off in that city on Thursday evening last, and was altogether a most splendid affair, With the New England people the fachion to open the ball at about eight o'clock, differing im this respect very essentially from our city fashionables, who ally wat until near midnight before commencing the dan Having partaken of a hasty repast, we were not slow in wending our way towards the location Where the warrior’s arms Shed their splendor, And the maiden’s charms Shone most tender, Meanwhile, what strain is that which floats through Aborn Ball? Mis music such as Dodworth’s band alove can give. Upon entering the hail, a flood of ight and Veauty burst, as if by magic, upon our vidton; and though New London is rome one hundred and twenty: five miles from New York, they do not allow themselves to be outdone in artistic embellissmeots when a soirée is to come off, while in the sepply of charming women— why, our reporter almost wished hiaself a bachelor again! The stars and etripes roingling with glistening muskets, and the various insignia of office ant uniform which checkered toat capacious amphitheatre, denoted the occasion which brought them together, while on- ward went the dance, and the utmost joy and hilarity seemed to lend their ehsrmed {niluence to render the same highly entertaining d delight- ful. Among the guests who were present we no- ticed quite » number of military gentlemen of bigh dis- tinction in that State, together with several representa. tives from bod rend press at large, while much of the wealth and fashion of the city honored the occasion with their presence. Tt ere was also a full delegation of both ladies and gentlemen from the neighboring cities, no that the entire number present could not have been less than two hundred couple. We will not venture to remark upon the personal attractions of the fair nex who were there assembled, contident as we are of our pec oan A to do them justice, should we undertake it; but tating it for granted they were a fair specimen of New id beauty, we must conclude the Yankee girls are idedly pretty and highly accomplished, Dancing was continued unti! the ‘ little hours’ warned the bappy company of the near inet of morning, when they separated, though not without regrets that the winter solstice did not contribute more length of night than that which marks the forty dret parallel of north latitude. The New London City Guard is commanded by Capt. Parkhurst, and does much credit to the militia system of that State. ‘The city of New London is located upon the west bank of the Thames, about three miles from the month of the harbor, where stands the celebrated Pequot House, one cf the finest watering Placen in New Fugland, |The har. bor is said to be one of the best in the world, and has pot been obstructed by ice more tnan once during the last century, The city was burned by the British during the Revolutionary war, September 6, 1781, the same day that witnessed the massacre at Fort Gris- wold, on the oppomite aide of the river; but it has rsen, phernix-like, and is now one of the first of commercial im- portance in Connecticut. The ball season has fully commenced in New London, and, without disparagement to others, we are informed that the City Guards andthe Nai thing in that line. Brooklyn Intelligence. A PRiwst ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT AND BaTreRy,—Capt. Cail, of the Fourth district police, yesterday arrested a Catholic priest having charge of a congregation in East Brooklyn, on & complaint made by Hugh Fitzpatrick, ebargirg him with assault and battery. It appears that the compla'nant took one of bis children to the house of ‘the priest for the purpose of haring it baptised. In ac- oe ce with the usual custom in such erremoaies, the parent was wired to inake certain answers to ques- tions age by priest. Being unable to do so, after several repetitions, tbe priest became irritated, and in the excitement of ‘the moment gave him several pretty severe raps about the head. This mode of reasoning had no better effect, however, and the parent becomi highly incensed at the summary treatment he reoetved, left the house ins hurry, avd procured a warrant for the arrest of his spiritual advisor.
