STUPENDOUS RAILROAD SCHEME FOR THE CITY OF NEW YORK. ‘Wt appears that we are to have another grand railroad operation in the city of New York, which, in pomt of pecalation, will outrival all others, and even throw the great Pacific railway attempt completely in the shade. Certain shrewd and boid adventurers have concocted a plan to fasten upon this city a railroad in Broadway, avother through Grand street from the Williamsburg ferry to the Hoboken ferry, and still another through avenue D, Columbia street and Fast Broadway. The plan of operation is well laid, the parties interested having engaged subtle tools at Albany, who are now busy in preparing the material for “putting through ‘the mill’’ the several bills intended to be presented dur- ing the present session of the Legislature. It is well known that there is a class of men in this community who are open to any chance or adventure for making money, and who for the past few years have been lurking about our City Hall, engaged in the lauda- ble pursuit of securing railroad grants, ferry franchises, and all kinds of fat jobs. Among these a clique has been formed, whose sole object it is to obtain grants simi- Jar to that given to a company to lay rails in certain streets in the cities of Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Bush- wisk, passed June 29, 1883. This clique is made up of three distinet interests, and way be classified as follows:—First, the Broadway Com- pany; second, the Grand Street Company; third, the Avenue D and East Broadway Company. These three in- ‘Yerests all work in common with one another, and when Viended together form one harmonious whole—the most finished and skilful lobby ever formed by a ‘Third Bouse.’” The members of this accomplished and formidable Jobby have been busy for the past six months, and Dave gone into the subject with such nice calcula'‘ons as to secure the election of certain members of the Legislature, for the express purpose of carrying this etupendous project by a coup d’état—every point has been well guarded, and they feel sanguine of success. This association is made up of all kinds of material; it bas connected with it ex-aldermen, bank directors, contractors, men holding office under the State govern- ment, and also others holding high pontions in tiis city—in fact, the projectors have tried te secure every available interest that ingenuity and cunning could devise; they will be untiring, being well organ- ized, and will endeavor to accomplish the great work which they have laid out for themselves. But we hope that there is sufficient integrity in the Le- gislature to give this subject a blank denial. If, how- ever, none should be found in that body to oppose this species of special legislation, we trust that the people — tbe “mighty people,’’ will rise en masse, and assert their rights by forcibly putting a stop to these nefarious and corrupt log-rolling operations. For ourselves, we con- sider it but a duty to bring these schemes before the public, that they may know what to anticipate, undhow to apply a remedy to corrupt legislation. It appears ‘thst these grants will not be pressed until after the United States Senatorship is disposed of, when they xl] come up in the tollowing order —First, the East Broad- way, Columbia street and Avenue D Company; next in ‘order will be the Grand street line; and last, the Broad- way. The two former, however, may unite in ome con- cern, as such an arrangementie now under considera- tion by the parties. The subject of a Broadway railway is to be brought in atthe last moment. These parties are also conserned with others in driving the New Haven Company from the Harlem track, in order that that company may be put ‘tothe extremity of making terms with the Second Ave- wee Rellros’ Company, to ure their track instead of the Fourth avenue. Destruction of the Rev. Dr. Buarchard’s Chureh by Fire. ‘The alarm of fire yesterday morning,+0on after 5 o’clock, ‘was caused by a fire being discovered in the Presbyte rian church, situated at 117 West Thirteenth street. The upper portion of the church was first dissovered on fire, and it is supposed was caused by a defect in the hot air heaters or flues. The church was located between a ‘block of dwelling houses, west of the Sixth avenue, Lackily forthese buildings, the church stood detached, and o space Of some ten to twelve feet remained on each mde of it. The firemen soon applied water, but it burnt too rapidly for them to save it, and they directed their attention to the saving of the adjoining buildings. In dese than an hour the whole of the church was in ruins. In the rear of this church, on Fourteecth street, 's the Provestant Episcopal church of the Annunciation, Rev. Samue} Seabury. This church escazed damage. ‘The Thirteenth street Presbyterian Church was insti- tuted by ® colony from the church im Houston street, of ‘the same denomination, It was commenced in the year 1847, in which year also it was dedicated. The original cont cf the church was $25,000, and of the ground oa which it was built $10,000, At first the congregation was quitesmall, and .t was @ matter of serious concern ‘to them bow they would build and pay forthe church; ‘pat by an earnest effort they at leagth acceded ia aecowpliching the former, and would soon have beea marbled to pay off what remuined of the debt of the church bad not this unfortunate occurrence taken After the church was opened, the Rey. Dr Burcktard ‘was called upon *o officiate aa the pracor of the congre- gation, which pos: he has filled for the last eight yeara with eminent ability, and to the great satisfactioa of Bis flock. Though small at first, tae congregation aas wradually increasd, watil at the time of the burnt every pew was occupisd, both on the ground floor a an the galleries. The church wae in the Grecian doric style of archi- ‘tecture, aod theugh it might not compare with some of its more showy peighburs in outward appearauce, its ‘aterior arrangements were everything that could be desired. Dr. Burchard has receutly changed his resi- dence from West Thiiteenth sireet, adjoining the church, to 16 Bank street. In doing #0, he crglected to remove his library, which was totally destroyed by the fire. On this the insurance bad just run out, and the doctor thereby suffers a loss of some $1,600. The Library contained som very rare avd valuable works. Among others, an edit:on of the old fathers, which can. not be replaced in this country. We learn that the pastors an! con; tions of the neighboring churches have come forward in the kindest manver, and offered the use of their lecture rooms to Dr. Burchard’s congregation, uatil their own edifice would be rebuilt. Dr. Potts aad Dr, Sommers have both mace this proffer, with the assent of their respective es. A meeting of the trustees of the church was last night, to see what could ve done in the way of furnishing a place of worship for the congrogi Vion, and to take measures for the immediate erection of a new building on the site of the old one. Aa the church has now communicants, there will doubtless be no difficulty in raising the requisite eam to com- mence the work, The folowing is the insurance on the church—Hano- ver Insuravuce Co., $6,000, Merchants’ lasurance Co., 6,000; Bt. Nicholas do., $4,000 on the organ, $1,000, ao the ‘om Insurance Co, making in $17,000. Explomon of a Steam Boiler. TRE ERGINEER SERIOUSLY INJURED-—MIRACULOUS RACAPE OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE ADJOINING BUILDINGS. A steam boiler exploded yesterday morning about 634 Welook, at the carpenter's shop of James Stephens, No 90 West Twenty-first street. It appears that Jame, Duns, the engineer, had started the fires as usual, pre peratory to commencing work, and after doing so he stepped outside the building, leaving no one to attend ‘the fires, Through rome inexplicable oversight be oe glected to acjunt the steamescape, when @ most (earfu pr coe Tay lace, which tore the building to atoms seattered he rulos ‘ very oe . Military Ball at New London, ‘The firet annual ball of the New London City Guards came off in that city on Thursday evening last, and was altogether a most splendid affair, With the New England people the fashion is common to open the ball at about eight o'clock, differing im this respect very essentially from our city fashionables, who vsually wa.t until near midnight before commencing the ance. Having partaken of a hasty repasi in wend.ng our way towards the locat: ry. put out, ty. | we were not slow plendor, And the maiden’s charma Shone most tender, Meanwhile, what strain is that which floats through Aborn Hall? Tis music such as Dodworth’s band alooe can give. Upon entering the hatl, a flood of light and Veauty burst, as if by magic, upon our viiton; aod though New London is some one hundred and twenty- five miles from New York, they do not allow themselves to be outdone in artistic embellis meats when a soirée is to come off, while in the supply of charming women— why, our reporter alm wished himself a bachelor again! The stars and stripes roingling with glistening muskets, and the various fnsignia of fice and unifore which checkered tuat capacious amphitheatre, denoted the occasion which brought them ther, while on- ward weot the dance, and the utmost joy and hilarity seemed to lend their charmed Infuence to render the same highly entertaining and delight- ful. Among the guests’ who were present we no- ticed quite a number of fr mat ebtncse of high dis- tinction in that State, together with several representa. tives from the public press at , While much of the wealth and fashion of the city honored the occasion with their presence. Tiere was also a full delegation of doth ladies and gentlemen from the neighboring cities, no that the entire number present could not have been leas than two hundred couple, We will not venture to remark upon the personal attractions of the fair sex who were there assembled, contident we are of our inability to do them justice, should we undertake it: but, taking it for granted they were a fair specimen of New pe Deauty, we m conclude the Yankee girls are a ly pretty and highly accomplished. Dancing was continued until the ‘little hours’ warned the Dappy company of the near Lo! ard of morning, when they separated, though not without regrets tha’ the winter solstice did not contribute more length of night than that which marke the forty-dret parallel of north latitude. The New London City Guard is commanded by Capt. Parkhurst, and does much credit to the militia system of that State, ‘The city of New London is located upon the west bank of the Thames, about three miles from the month of the harbor, where stands the celebrated Pequot House, one cf the finest watering Places in New England. The har- bor is said to be one of the best in the world, and has pot been obstructed by ice more than once during the last century. The city was burned by the British during the Revolutionary war, September 6, 1781, the same day that witnessed the massacre at Fort Gris wold, on the oppomte side of the river; but it has risen, pheenix-like, and is now one of the first of commercial im. portance in Connecticut. The ball season has fully commenced in New London, and, without disparagement to others, we are informed that the City Guards andthe Nameaugs eclipse every. thing in that line. Brooklyn Intelligence. A PRIEST ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT AND BatreRy.—Capt. Cail, of the Fourth district police, yesterday arrested a Catholic priest having charge of a congregation in East Brooklyn, on a complaint made by Hugh Fitzpatrick, charging him with assault and battery. It appears that the compla‘nant took one of his children to the house of the priest for the purpose of haring it baptised. In ac- cordance with the usual custom in such ceremoaies, the parent was wired to inake certain answers to ques- tions pet by priest. Being unable to do #0, after several repetitions, the priest became irritated, and in the excitement of the moment gave him several pretty severe raps about the head. This mode of reasoning had no better effect, however, and the parent becomi highly incensed at the summary treatment he reseivel left the house ina hurry, aod procured a warrant for the arrest of his spiritual advisor. The defendant ap. peared before Justice Curtis iterday morning to ai awer, but as the complainant did not make himsolf viei- ble, it is more than probable that the difficulty will be settled without recourse to la Court Calendar—This Day.
