In the evening the fact came to the knowledge of a Catholis priest, who fastructed the teachers to destroy the books. Fourmen who had been appointed teachers by the influence of the priests, went to the school, seized all the books, des- troyed many of them, and it {s said, punished some of ‘the children who cried at their loss. T A SPECIAL MEESING OF THE NATIONAL Democratic Republican General Committee, held at uyvesant Institute on Wednesday, January '3, 1855, at 144 o'clock P. M., in the absence’ of Mr. Schell, the Chairman, Joseph M Marsh, of the Tenth ward,’ was unanimously appointed Chairman pro tem, of the Com- mittee, and A. iagher acted as Secretary. ‘The Treasurer presented his report, which was ap- proved, and the subject of unadjusted claims was re- ferred to the Finance Committee, with power to arrange the rame. On motion of Timothy Daly, Esq., it was unani- mously Resolved, That the thanks of this Committee are due, and are hereby tendered, to Richard Schell, Esq., for the highly efficient, able and impartial manner in which he has discharged the duties of Chairman of this Com- mittee during the past year. Peter B. Sweeney thereupon offered the followin reamble and resolutions, which, after eloquent ani feeling remarks in support thereof by Messrs. Daly and Haskin, were unanimously adopted: — Whereas, we have learned with profound sorrow of the death of our colleague, Richard T, Mulligan, repre- sentative from the First ward to this committees, and whereas, Mr, Mulligan has for a long period been proimi- nently identified with the democratic cause, and has long enjoyed the confidence and esteem of our party, throughout the entire State, as evidenced by the uaan mous action of our State conventions for a series of years, in selecting him for the distinguished and re- sponsible position of mem er of the State Central Com- mittee, which position he held at his death; and where- as, in the more limited sphere of our General Committee, in'which we have been in almost constant association with the deceased, he has commanded the highest re pect and admiration of every member, for his intel! gence, bis strength of judgment, is ‘unbending in arity, and his uncompromising fidelity to the principles of national democrasy, an well aa for his unvarying courtesy and eminent social qualities; and whereas, it in fitting that in this, the hour of affliction to his be- reaved fnmily, we should offer to them our condolence and sympathy for the irreparable loa they have sas. tained, and that we should place on record our estimate of the virtues and character of our deceased associate and friend; therefore, be it Resolved, That in the death of Richard T.
