Eewerrrre er, Lanner SHIPSASTERS.—THE ATTENTION OF THE BOARD i of underwriters has recently been called to a most blo general chart of: the coast from Gay Head to Cape Heniopon, from a survey under the direct on of & R. Hassler and A. D. aul tendents of the sur- vey of the coast of the Uni States.”’ Published in 1so8., It is the judgment of the board that this chart should be in the possession of every shi ter trading to and from the of New York, ead tt i jon lieved that if its directions are carefully observed, and | | the lead and line properly used by competent hands, no | j reael would be stranded on - shores of Long Island | or New , unless ven & hurricane. Board of Underwriters. December 9,J1854. Sailing directions for Vessels from Sea.—General direc- tions —The Gulf stream, by its high temperatare, gives the first warning of an approach to the coast. In lati- tnde 3844 deg. it is nearly 340 nautical miles from the land, messuring on a parallel of latitude. After passing through it, tho temperature begins to fall. There is also | & fall of temperature on striking soundings, which shows the time to use the deep-sea lead, | | The color of the water changes with the depth. From | 150 to 50 fathoms it from dark blue to light Dlue; and from 50 to 30 fa ‘and less, from a light showing the depths of 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 86 and 100 fethome, bp to | Senne ‘the shore; and between the 8¢ and 100 out i i i 5 z i ; : i titude of a ship's place is usually better known than the beet os but the latter is the most important A on 3] thia coast, and can be determined ap- ximately from the latitude in connection with the jistance between the curves of depth. ‘To show the slope of the bottom, .1 the sudden change in the depth, on a sown lings, sections of the bottom five hi wi are drawa on the wap, are added. The rise o! the outer bank slope is #0 rteep that if uncertain of position, from want of obser- Sat‘ons, the careful use of the lead will preserve from rom danger. Eottom.—In 109 fathoms, east of the entrance of Delaware Bay, the bottom, in 100 fathoms, is most. dark gray sand, mixed with broken shells. To the nort! o, th porallol it is mostly green and blue mud, mixed witl : In less than, 100 fathoms, east of Delaware Bay, the bottom, between 100 and 40 fathoms, is most frequeatly sand and broken inside of 40 fathcms, gray or yellow sand, with black ‘specks. North of this parallel the bottom is as often m sand, the mud being more frequent going to the northeast, until off Block fsland, where the bottom from 100 to 20 fathoms is mostly green mud or ooze, koown as the Block Island soundings. Green mud or ooze cannot be found within fifteen mites of Block Island, and seldom to the west of the meridian of Montauk Point, in less than 50 fathoms water. Between 40 and 20 tathoms, off the coast of Long Island and New, Jersey, the character of the bottom changea so often between these depths that constant reference must be made to the descriptions on the chart. Bouud to New York.—Courses —From the eastward, striking soundings in more than 3b fathoms, green mud, steer direct for Sandy Hook, making Nevesink or the Light Boat. Striking souadings in leas than 30 fathoms, green mud, steer to the northward of west, shoaling the water very gradually on that course, If beating against a-westerly wind in the nightor thick weather, do not siand into less than 18 fathoms on the northwarily tack till nearly up with Fire Island Inlet. The chart shows that after passing inside of 25 fathoms the soundings decrease very slowly going west, and very rapidly going north, or on Long Iéland shore. Thia distinction should be carefully borne in mind. Nors.—If vessels from the east bound to New York fall in sight of Flankaty Light, they are too noar to Davis’s fouth Shoal, and’ will keep to the southward till they lowing extracts from che ee which accom- | oes it. P'Prom the soutliward end eastward shape the course from the Nevesink Lights, observing the precautions with the lead given in the guneral direstions. Sk. From the southward, bound to New York from the southward, nothing is gained by running into less than 15 fathoms water. To the north of Barnogat less than 15 fathoms is unsafe, 10 or 12 fathoms being found within a mile and a quarter of the beach. fin 15- fathoms in the night or thick weather, the lead should be kept in hand and the bottom examined. Gravelly bottom indicates too veer an approach to land. To ran for New York harbor from the Light Boat, whon up with the Light Boat, if without a pilot steer NW, by W. 34 W, and after shoaling the water to eight fathoms, take up the range for thojchannel to be entered according to the direetious on the chart of New York bay and harbor. Bottom Near the Coast.—From Sandy "Hook towards the south, the bottom changes from fine sand to coarse gray sand. On approsetnog Barnegat it becomes gravel- iy; and off the mouth of thag inlet, it is gravel pebbles, and insome places thells. The soundings also change from ten to seven fathoms at the same distance from the shore. After passing Barnegat, the bottom changes News—New York Crystal Mines—Beg- ing Weber cnt met om for Mating ry Fortune™: from gravel to yellow and gray sand, with yellow specks, found off Old inlet, Little Harbor. “Of Great Eg Harbor, thejbottom, in from eight to ten fathoms, is fine gray sand; to the scuth of this yellow aand is again met and is carried up to Hereford Inlet. South of this inlet haar ye! of Cape May, the bottom is white orgray sand. ebay tai en. a mates the shoal gro of inlet, extends from 3 to 134 alles from the shore. On the Jorsey shore, there are shoals off Barnegat and the the inlets to the south of it, extending from 1 to 13¢ i pom the shore. They are to be avoided by using | e lead. HORSES, CARRIAGES, 4&0.
