FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | MONEY MARKET. Wernxespar, Nov. 29—6 P. M. ‘There wasa very active and a very buoyant stock market this morning. Erie, Central and Reading were the great cards to-day, and a very large amount of ba- sinoes wan transacted in each, Better prices ruled at the opening than at the close, and the amount of stoc\ sold was greater than we have noticed for several *wooks past. Itis acurious fact that while the fancies have advanced, State securities declined, At the first Pema Bonds, 4g. Minois Central Bonds improved 34 per cent; Delaware and Hudson, 34; Nicaragua Transit, 14; Canton Company, };; Michigan Central Railroad, 2; Reading Railroad, 114; New York Central Railroad, 434; Erie Railrond, %; Hudson River Railroad, 4. Railroad bends were operated in to some extent, at better prices. ‘Lhe rise in New York Central Railroad stock has been most rapid. A day or two since it sold at 76 per cent cash, and to-day sales were made at 8514 per cent—being an ndvance of 91/ per cent in about three days. Nearly three thousand shares were sold to-day, at the imprové- mont? Erie hus also risen very fast. On Montay there were sales at 31 per cent, and to-day itgold at 345g, an advance of tliee and a half per cent since Monday morning. The bulls ought to he satisfied with such a rise {such a short space . Reading Railroad opened and closed firm at the improvement, and buyers were plenty. We have no idea that tiie advance con be wholly main- tained, or continue at tie tame rates. The transac- tions on time form the bulk of operations, and the bears will, without doubt, strengthen themselves by putting out new and longer contracts at better prices. A more moderate, steadicr rise would liave been more likely to be permanent, and the bulls could have realized profits ag it progressed. The sudden change in “the complexion. of the market since Monday is not warranted by cireum- stances, The news brought by the steamship Baltic wan of @ character by no means ‘calculated to favor easier time on this side of the Atlantic, and we have had nothing since of a different nature, We are anx- iously looking for another arrival, with the impression that much depends upon tie effect of later advices from the Crimea upon the finances of (reat Britain, whether the present depression here continues or not. It is time that, as far asthe liquidation of indebtedness is con- cerned in our foreign trade, we were rapidly extricating ourselves, and it is possible that for a time our exporta- tion of specie may be limited, but we must not lose sight of the fact that our commercial relations still continue too intimate with England to be indifferent to the disastrous effect of the war upon her most important interests. We may not require from the capitatists of England, or of the continent, any more money to carry on our works: of internal improvement, and it may be better for us that any such wants cannot, under existing circum- stancon, be gratified; but we look to England for the article affects our mont vital local interests. pound makes, in our resources. how! Virginia 6's fell off 34 per cent; Missouri 6's, %; ; consumption of our greatest and most valuable article of prodace, (cotton), and whatever affects the value of that We look to that for the means of paying tor the bulk of our im. portations, and any trifling depreciation in value per in the aggregate, an important reduction Every merchant is interested in the condition of his customers, and it is for his interest that they should continue rich and prosperous, If they are poor and embarrasred in their affairs, he cannot expect ‘them to pay up promptly or purchase largely. It is in” Liverpoo), basarrived with three days later intelligence ' and tho same way with countries trading with each oth: whetever affects unfavorably one, will be felt more or less by the others. It ia, therefore, useless for us to talk about a rapid recovery, or improvement in our financial affirs, while onr best customers iu Europe are involve d in a war that is likely to bo protracted and exceedingly expensive. The doubt and uncertainty that hangs about the result of the conflict going on under the walls of Sebastopol is.alone sufficient to hold all financial operations in abeyance, and create greater caution and circumspection in all the movements of commerce, The steamship Africa is therefore anx- iously looked lor, She will bring three days Inter intel- ligence, and, without doubt, something more decisive from the scene of hostilities, At all events, wo shall be 40 much in advance of the present time, and may know the worst. In thé event of the financial advices being of au unfavorable character, and the accounts from the Crimea diastrous to the allied powers, it would hasten the culminating point in our stock market, and carry the depression to the last stage. It is upon the turn trom such depreciations that buyers have a strong guaranty of profit. It is the rebound after a great prea- sure that we must look for, and the heavier the weight placed upon operations the more active and buoyant they become when relieved. Almost the last straw has been added to the camel's back. The entire chapter of disasters bas been realized. We cannot think of any- thing else but a repetition of what has already oc- curred, to extend and curtail the destruction of property, credit and resources of the country. The closing accounts from the Paris Bourse this even- ing show a renewed decline of a half per cent, owing te speculative sales, The private letters contain no direct information regarding the rumored loan; but, as the French government at the commencement of the war di@ not, by an increase of taxation, make equal preparations fo those adopted on this side, it is supposed that it cam- not be long delayed, and that it must be for a comsidera- ble amount. ‘The inquiry for gold for exportation to the Continent continues, and would absorb a large quantity, were suck. an offer in the market. ‘The exchanges as yet, however, are not sutholentiy unfavorable to allow of a profit om the withdrawal of any considerable amount of bar from the bank; but should a further decline in the rates take place, this result would certainly ensue. In view of this state of things, and of the steady drain of sove- reigns to the East, it is apprehended that the two or three succeeding returns of the bank will be unfavora- ble as rds the item of coin and bullion. Shipments of gold also continue to be made to Spain and Portugal. The cotton market was very inactive, attributed prin- cipally to the continued’ unfavorable accounts from the manufacturing districts, Quotations remained ateady. Breadstuffs had declined.
