The butchers, on the other hand, say that the change of day is but a speculative movement, so that the dealers may know what the prices of maat’ are in Philadelphia and Baltiore, whose market days are on Mondays, and thus enhance the price to the buyers mm this city. The question is a knotty one, but we hope ‘that whatever the result may be the laboring poor will not sufer by ite final settlement. Brandy, from the Growers Direct. One of the principal and great causes of the high priceof braniy in this market is the indirect source from which it is rived, Nine-tenths of that imported is received from mercantile houses in Cognac, who buy of the farmers in that district and ship it to the United States, at, much advanced prices, and frequently in an adulterated state. In view of these facts, and (or the purpose of securing & fair price for their product, a union of brandy grow. ers in France has been accomplished, with the view of shipment to the United States. je name of the consolidation is the Central Society of Vineyard Proprietors of Cognac, under the manaze ment of @ president, vice-president, and » committee of inspection of eight members. The’ society itself num- bers five hnndred vineyard proprietors, amongst them some of the most influential noblemen in the neighbor- hood of Cognac, who contribute, under certain by-laws, the entire growth of their vineyards td the general (und of the society, the present capital of which is three million frames.’ The advantages to be obtained from this combination are so apparent as to render unnecessary any further comment on the subject; nevertheless, it may be worthy of observation that few features in this society possess a more striking claim to public attention than the fusion'of interest effected between buyer and seller. Since all are shareholders, it necessarily be comes the interest of each individual to contribute b: every means in his power to uphold the reputation which the society is endeavoring to earn, for shipment of the best qualities of brandies, For this purpose a clause in- troduced in the statutes (article 40) renders it impera- tive that shareholders shall supply the society with the very best Cognac brandies, otherwise they incur the liability of an entire forfeiture of their share. The undersigned, sole agents in the United States for the Central Society of Vineyard Proprietors of Cognac, would sokicit the attention of merchants, hotelkeepers, groceriyand others to the vintages now on hand, conf Gert that they will compare more than fovorably with any article in the market, and at prices far Lelow the stamtard of even ordinary Cognacs.
