MONEY HARKET. Sunpar, Nov. 19-6 P. M The stock market, during the past week, has expe- rienced fluctuations somewhat more extensive than | usual, but they seem to have had no matetial effect upon | the views of operators, or upon the position of specu- lators. The reduction in market value within the past | six months has let loose a great deal of capital. It re- quires much less to carry any of the leading fancies now than it did a few weeks since, and this has been an ] inducement for many to take hold as purchasers. At | present prices, the dividend paying railroad stocks give larger rates of interest, and investments are made daily where ten and twelve per cent. interest per annum will be realized without much risk of further depreciation, There is an advantage in such investments which makes them most attractive, and such securities must seon be entirely absorbed, We allude particularly to first class railroad bonds, In leas than twelve months there will be # scarcity of this class of stocks, and they will be sought after at enhanced prices. The absorption of our good railroad bonds is going on in Europe, as well as on this side of the Atlantic; and as the creation of them has nearly ceased, the supply must, before the lapse of months, be largely redueed. All first class railroad companies will be able at all times to raixe all the money they want at rates not at all exorbitant. We allude particularly to those roads which are completed and so located as to com- mand a large traffic, without much regard to sectional, financial or commercial disturvances. Unfinished roads have a hard time of it just now, and it will be a long time before the means fer their completion can be raised. Railroads earning large sums of money monthly, and showing from month to month a handsome per cent in crease, cannot be checked by any temporary contraction in financial affairs. Those which have been productive must, with good management, continue #0, and the most they can suffer would be in the natural increase of earn- ings. A year or more since, when railroad bontls were put on the market at the rate of about a million of dol- lars per week, there was a glut, and prices run down to very low points; but during the past year or so, consump- tion has been steadily going on, while the production has almost entirely ceased, The effect of this groat change must soon be felt in the market. Those who were unfortunate enough to get bonds of half-finished roads must make the best of bad bargains, and make up their losses by economy and industry, while those who made investments in completed, productive lines must con tinue to exercise proper caution ia the future purchases. That there will continue an active, xteady demand in this market for good railroad bonds, there is no doubt; and as the supply decreases prices must improve. The construction of now lines of railroad has stopped. This alone will be of vast service tu the lines in operation. he causes arresting the pro- gross of new works must in this way prove beneficial to the old established companies, They have for the time shut off competition, and charges for both travel and traffic will hereafter be enhanced, so as to give a larger net income out of gross receipts. Arrangements have already been completed to this e‘Tect, and on some of the leading lines have been in operation a few weeks. It is estimated that the increase in the tariff of charges will be equal to a reduction of full ten per cent in the run- ‘ng expenses. All this tends to the relief of the older companies from their temporary embarrassments, and will ultimately place them in a better position than they Jove ever before occupied. The new companies will Lave to struggle along as they best can until better times appear. We have railroads enough for the present, and must giye the country an opportunity to recover from | 4 eburden so impradently heaped upon it, and gain strength sufficient to make productive all existing works of internal improvements, before investing any more capital in new projects. ‘There are but two railroad companies in the market for loans of any magnitude, and these are likely to be suc- cessful. We allude to the New York and Erie and the New York Central. Tho first named is in the market for a nominal loan of $4,000,000, but an actual loan of only $1,250,000, which will remove its entire floating debt, and place its bonds at long dates, with an abundance of available funds to provide for them as they mature. ‘The gross earnings of the Erie Railroad Company the pre- sent year will be nearly equal to the original estimate of total cost, and upon the net revenue derived from this enormous income the company feel confident of beng able to establish a sinking fund of nearly half a million of dollars per annum, and pay to the stockholder) a moderate dividend. Within the past six months there has been a greater revolution in the affairs of the Erie Railroad Company than in any other road in the country; a revolution which has placed the concern in a much bet- ter position in all its departments, iastead of placing it |) greater embarrassments, like many cther roads. The wrie Railroad Company have at last adopted a policy which we have been urging upon them for the past four or five years, and the fact of its having done so shows 4 © correctness of our views. From the re-organization f the company up to last June, the principal business of the management was the contraction of debts by an issue of bonds, and the expenditure of money on cong struction account, with the greatest extravagance. Now all that has ceased. The construction account has been closed, The payment of dividends out of the proceeds of the sale of bonds has ceased, and the attention of the 1 anagement is now turned to the consolidation of its {debtedness and the ostablishment of » proper system of finance. Under the old system all was confusion and «rayagance; under the new, we have every reason to Delieve all will be order and economy. The reau!t of every year’s operations will be a reduction of debt, iustead ofan increase, and the influence of the sinking fund "pon the company’s securities will be much more effe § | o than is generally anticipated, The appropriation of rly half a million of dollars per annum, and the interf +ovon that amount, to the purchase of the company’s evidences of debt, must work like a charm upon the ma [ Ket value ofeach class of bonds, but particularly upon che issue under the new loan. The first month after the negotiation of that loan, the trustees of the sinking fund will be in the market as purchasers for thirty-five *usand dollars worth. How much that will buy de- uds upon the market price, and the company will have the benefit monthly of any discount it may at first be obliged to pay on the loan’ It is extimated by those well posted relative to the present condition ef the financ § of the Erie Company, that with a gross income for the year ending September 30, 1855, of six millions turee hondred thousand dollars, there will be, after paying ope- ting expenses, interest on debt and sinking fund, a net revenue of nearly one million of dollars, to be appropri ated to such purposes, aiter paying a moderate dividend, as the management may deem advisable.
