3829 by ‘Viator, or a Peep into my Note Book.” In the epistic dedicatory, he says, ‘it is the second of a series now in course of publication, on agreat variety of topics, the whole being designed to be illustrative an] somewhat corrective of what is called the New School, and to por. | tray the unbappy influences of the present mania in lit- erature, over men, manners and things, as they appear on itis side of the Atlantic.’ The author was ‘tn wati fed that Jack Downing, Bor, Sliek & Co., slwull #0 drebly supplant Bacop, Shaky are, Johnson & Co. | ‘The great work of Mr. Hoffman, however, was not ocmpleted until he wss an oll man, and its publication fe; still unfinished. It is entitled “Chronicles Selected frow the Originals of Cartaphilus, the Waudering Jew— Embracing a period of nearly nineteen centuries; now first revealed to and edited by David Hoffman.” ’ This wxtracrdinary proJuetion occupied much of the author's Save for more than twenty years, aad was to make six lange octavo velumes, comprising as much matter as | the entire works of pir Walter Scott. The design DpLezzs to be toexhibit the civilization of the successive Christian ages, as it would have appeared to a single ob- eerver and participator. Adopting the fable of the Wan- dering Jew, that mythieal personage is made the his- tortan of the manuers, philosophy and affairs of all the generations since the time of Christ. The two volumes which we bave seen, and which, we believe, are the only ones yet printed, come down to the slose of the sixth century. The first appeared in London, in 1S86u, aud the secon! in the early part of 1854. This werk evinces an extent and thoroughness of erudition very rare among the scholars of this age, and quite un- yarallele? probably among those of our own country. It is much to be regretted*that the venerable and learned author did not live to see it all through the press, and to hear the judgment which the literary workd will pro- ne: , finely formed, and of” dignified His conversation was rly #, and an unusual knowledge | en, and was a shrowd judge and an interesting de- Kneatwor of character. His taste in the fine arts was ex- erlent, and his skill as a euisinier wan equal, perhaps, to that of Bellini. His social virtues wore of the bigh- ost order, and gentlemen had more numerous or more attached friends, THE LATE PRINCESS OZARTORYSKA. [From the Journal des Debats, Oct, 28.) We bave already announced the death of the Princess Maria of Wurtemberg, the Princess Czartoryeka by birth and the sister of Pringe Adam Czartoryski. On the 2th of this month, after diviue service had Deen performed in the church of Faint Louis en Viale, a funeral procession followed the coffin of the noble de evased to the village of Montmoreney, where her morta remains were placed in the cemetary of the pariah. A few touching words from the Abbé Jelowicki, from the Abbe Thullicr, the parish curate of Montmorency, from ‘the Abbe Godiowski, almoner to the princess, from M Barzykovski, formerly a member of the Polish govern- meni, brought out in relief before the mourning family and a numerous auditory the virtues of the priacess. Born in 1765, she lived through all the troubles of the Inst reign in Poland when independent, and the sad vi- cheiudes of Poland conquered. Frederick the Second, King of Prussia, who, it is kzown, took the initiative in the partition of Poland, Perceivod, towards the end of his reign, that in the long run he was only playing ® secondary part in the North, and that the excessive preponderance of Russia might iu eurious information. of net be without danger for Germany. He thought, per- haps, that a German Prince succeeding Stanislaus Au- atus on the throne of Poland might become a guaran- = this increasing preponderance of Russia. In this hope he turned his eyes on hia nephew, Lewis Fred- eriok Alexander, Duke of Wurtemberg, as the future possible candidate for the Polish throne; and, in order to prepare hima favorable reception in the country, he gone! a marriage between him and the young Princess rin Czartoryaka, daughter of Prince Adam Czartorysii, Palatine General of the Russian lands, heir to the im- menee credit and fortunes of his father and uncle, In- direct insinuations, and apn autograph letter from King Frederick Il, decided the relatives of the Princess to accept the oer, which they regarded as the sure pleige of a clover relationship between) ruasia andPoland, thereby * securing the support of the former. The youthful princess was only fifteen years old when she devoted herself to this political marriage. Frederick William IL, King of Pruseia, obedient at first to the slow instinctive prompt- ings of his predecessor and to the influence of tle Cabi- net of St. James?s, offered to asrist energetically in the regeneration of Poland, concluded with this power a s0- lemn alliance, indnced the Republic to break with Rus- ait, and keptan army in readiness to defend his now atty. Not long after, however, forgetting in tenishing manner his sworn plighted faith, the Prussian army, destined to defend the cause which ‘the King had taneously embraced but a short timo before, joined the Ruxsian forces againat Poland. The Duke of Wur- temburg acquiesced in thia sudden veering of Prussian pobey, and asa consequence the happiness of his wife, the Princess, was annihilated for ever. Fate so willed it ‘that the only son of the Princess, Prince Adam of Wur- temburg, brought up abroad by his father, and a gene- ral in the Russian service, bore arms in 831 against Po- Mund. We may imagine the despair of his mother—a Po- Mah woman, a Czartoryska—when she heard whistling in the halle of Pulavi the Russian bullets that secompanied the attack made on the castle by adetachmeut belonging to the corps commanded by her own son. After the disasters of 1831 the Princess of Wurtem- withdrew into Gallicla, where she devoted herself entirely to the care of her aged mother, at the very mement that political storms were dispersing her nu- merous family, The death of this cherished mothe deprived her of all that Poland, in her state of op sion, had attractive or conaolatory for her. She hast- exed to Paris, and there lived the rest of her days with her brother, Prince Adam Czartoryaki. It was in his arms that she expired. ‘the Frincesa of Wartemberg has acquired a well deserved repute in Polish Hterature. In concert witts her mother, she published a book that has become ver} lar in’ Poland; it # the “Pilgrim of Dobromil”? Qrletgrzym w Dobra, & work im which tho hitory S Poland is related to children in the most caay and attractive manner. The incoss also successfull; easayed her pen in another kind of literature. A novel entitked “Malvina, or the Instinct of the Heart, obtained the honors of a French and a Russian trans- lation. It would be impossible to retrace hero the noble and zare qualities of the deceased laly. Gontleness, good- ness, sincere and profound devotion, and especially her charity, were all characteristic of her soul. ‘Though the daughter of one of Poland’s mightiest lords, the Princess of Wuriemberg was never enamored @f luxury. If she helped to iropair her fortune she did #0 by acts of beneficence. Notwithstanding the decrease of her revenue, she was still rich enoagh to found in Galicia, and amply endowed a convent for saeurs de cha- rié. Ehe wrote her own hand her will, in which she bequeathed to her brother by choice, Prince Adam Ceartoryski, the estates in Podolia, which are rightfully hers. . During her lifetime she had prepared in the cemetery of Montmorency a vault, where her mortal remains have been placed by the side of her adopted daughter, a few removed from tle tombs of friends devoted to her mily, those of General Kniaziewitz and Seuator J. Niemeowicz. y DEATH OF SAMUEL DANA, ESQ, OF BOSTON, Many of our mercantile readers will learn the death of this well known citizen with much regret, although it has been evident for many months that he was failing in beatth. His death took place last night, says the Horton Pranscript of the 18th inst., at his late residence in Bulfinch place, Mr. Dana was for many years, senior member of the firm of Dana, Fenno & Henihaw. He ‘was a man of sound and solid ; clear-xighted, and able, Asa man of business he was indefatizable, and fora long serien of years the house of which be was the head maintained a high Snaneial position, and we have often heard it stated that of the maay millions of dollars of ish and French exchange they nogoti- sted in Boston during a large number of years, not a single bill wax ever dishonored, to subject ihe bolder to Jess. Mr. Dana waa a thoroughly honest and upright wan, and the estimation in which be was held in our community was based upon the manly virtues of his character.
