Obituary. MR. CHARLES 8. T. BURKE, AUTHOR AND COMEDIAN. Cuan.es 8. T. Borne died at the Florence Hotel in this city on Friday night, aged thirty-two years. He fell victim to that terrible destroyer which cuts off s0 many. of the brightest and the best of our countrymen— consumption. His mother, an eminent vocalist and ae diedof the same disease, and ithad been gradually _Mr. Burke for ten years previous to his death. Ja the death of Charles Burke, the American stage has Jost one of its brightest ornaments; his family, a much loved relative; and his friends will lament the loss of a generous; warm hearted, high minded gentleman. He ‘was born in the city of Philadelphia on the 27th March, 1829. “His mother died in 1830, leaving him to the care of his stepfather, Mr. Joseph Jefferson, the actor, artist and manager. Thus Mr. Burke was brought up in the society of the most prominent theatrical @milics in the United States—the Jeffersons and the Warrens. Mr. Burke “began at the beginning,” and when only three years of age he represented Cora’s child (Pizarro) on the stage of the Chesnut street theatre, Philadelphia _ He afterwards played at the old National theatre in this ‘élty, and at the Bowery, At an early age he visited th Southern and Western cities, and made a good profes sienal stand, at ones. Returning to his native city, he was immediately engaged by Mr. Burton forthe Arch street thegtre. He made his first “hit” in a burlesque of “Gizelle,”” we think. At this time, in the. same theatre were the three best comedians in the United Statee—Mr. Burten, Mr. Burke and Mr, Jos, Jefferson, Jr. Mr. Burke’s style was not so rich and unctuous as that ‘ef Mr. Burton; be had not the physical power to go through the amount of labor which that great arti«t performa; he had not the age and the stage experience of his manager, but he was still favorably compared with him. Mr. Burke’s style was eminently quiet and artistic. He mado his impressions upon his audiences as some artists paint pictures—by ® succession of beautiful Uittle touches, forming a grand and harmonious whole. He waa not an actor of points—he wid not play one scene beautifully and another badly; but the acted the whole part well. In this respect, and in that of originality of conception, the bess critics thooght him unexcelied, and, with the exception of Borton, unapproached. He played all the legitimate low comedy parts—Frenchmen, Yankees, (the most natural swe have seen,) and what are called eccentric parts, He wass clover wor tite a good singer, could execute a clover ‘violin solo, snd has written many pleasant ballads and weveral After Fisitaded hia career he came to New York, ‘of 1848-9,) and was stage manager for Mr. | Seotren. when that gentleman directed the Chatham bag pated of our readers will remember bim at tiat also at Burton’s theatre, where he played a sak cnan gement to commence the season of 1850~'51, ance thet Sime, as frequently as his health would allow, he has played star engagements in various cities an mane, Chesnut street theatre, Philndel: i i fo eucageren quent ta, Now York wasia Athart of 1853, when he the Bowery theatre d ri gd Ue ‘weeks, Hoe then went t¢ Baltimore as manoger th, the smell of cam- Se St were em The rele } | since, \ friends. No man could have been more sin- loved by his professional brethren and his private al jealousy did not find a place in tomy; he was warm inejudicious praise of the efforts of his brother actors; slow to con- demn, and uever without sound'cause. As an actor, he had reached the topmost round of the ladder, In ail the relations of private life he was without fear and without reproach. The memory of such men can never die.
