Obituary. MB. CHARLES 8. T. BURKE, AUTHOR AND COMEDIAN. Cuan.zs 8. T. Burke died at the Florence Hotel in this city on Friday night, aged thirty-twoyears. He fell victim to that terrible destroyer which cuts off s0 many of the brightest and the best of our countrymen— consumption. His mother, an eminent vocalist and ae died of the same disease, and ithad been gradually aes ae Burke for ten years previous to his death. ‘ta the death of Charles Burke, the American stage has Jost one of its brightest ornaments; his family, » much loved splative; and his friends will lament the loss of a generous; warm hearted, high minded gentleman. He ‘was born in the city of Philadelphia on the 27th March, 1822. ‘His mother died in 1830, leaving him to the care of hia stepfather, Mr. Joseph Jefferson, the actor, artist ‘and manager. Thus Mr. Burke was brought up in the society of the most prominent theatrical families in the United States—the Jeffersons and the Warrens. Mr. Burke “began at the beginning,” and when only three years of age he represented Cora’s child (Pizarro) on the stage of the Chesnut street theatre, Philadelphia He afterwards played at the old National theatre in this * elty, and at the Bowery, At an carly age he visited th Southern and Western cities, and made a good profes aianal stand, at ones. Returning to his native city, he ‘wan immediately engaged by Mr. Burton forthe Arch street thegtre. He made his first “hit” in a burlesque of ‘Gizelle,” we think. At this time, in the. same theatre were the three best comedians in the United States—Mr. Burten, Mr. Burke and Mr. Jos. Jefferson, Jr. ‘Mr. Burke’s style was not so rich and unctuous as that @ Mr. Burton; he had not the physical power to go through the amount of labor which that great arti«t performe; he had not the age and the stage experience of his manager, but he was still favorably compared | with him. Mr. Burke’s style was eminently quiet and artistic. He made his impressions upon his audiences as some artists paint pictures—by a succession of beautiful | Uttle touches, forming a grand and harmonious whule. He was not an actor of points—he wid not play one scene beautifully and another badly; but ke acted the whole part well, In this respect, and im that of originality of conception, the bost critics thought him unexcelled, and, with the exception of Berton, unapproached. He played all the legitimate low comedy parts—Frenchmen, Yankees, (the most natural ‘we have seen,) and what are called eccentric parte. He ‘wes a clever J ah & good singer, could execute a clever p= ry has written many pleasant ballads and rte career he came to New York, “Bier ta pret Nie eg mye hanfrau when that the Chatham — Many of our Steve wilh remember him at that and also at Burton’s theatre, where he played set ooanpormant to commence the season of 5051. \Bince that time, as Le ee would allow, he has played’ star engagements in various anerard ‘tewns throughout the United States. He arrived in New York about six weeks since, and died as above recorded. Yesterday his re- mains were conveyed toThiladelphia, Heleaves a widow, but OT gil 4 Nothin, to be added to this rather imperfect rketch of Mr. Burke, but a few words in relation to his private character. Noman couli have been more sine cerely loved by his professional brethren and his private friends. Profersional jealousy did not find a place in | any part of bis anatomy; he was warm im judicious praise of the efforts of his ‘brother actors; slow to con- | demn, and never without sound'cause. As an actor, he had reached the topmost round of the ladder. In all the relations of private life he was without fear and without reproach. The memory of such men can never die. Mortalitale relicta vivit immortalitate indulus. Police 1 Intelligence. Eztensive Larceny.—On Friday evening last a gentle- .man named Captain John James, at present stopping at the Irving House, was accosted by a handsome nymph of the pave named Ada Byron, who, taking his arm, walked with him along the street, and engaging him in conversation, managed to introcuce her hand into his pocket and abstract » pocketbook containing five twenty dollar gold pieces, two five dollar pieces, and two two dollar and fifty cent pieces, also acheck for $3,000, drawn in his favor by Page, Bacon & Co. of St. Louis, also a receipt for a horse that he had bought. The duped individual made application the next day at the Chief's office for an officer to find, if possible, the woman that had so_adroitly picked his pocket.
