With but few unimportant exceptions, everything passed off ba woniously, The Whig General Committee met last evening and appointed this day week asthe time for hold ing the primary elections of that party. Tbo merit- of the various tallied of candidates for Mayor were freely discussed, but in the present foggy state of the political atmosphere, mere opinions are wortn Tess. In addition to our generally gratifying ac- counts «f a sutstantial home supply of bread and meat for the winter necessities of our twenty-five millions of people, there ave other good and positive causes for the late rapid run down in flour. The fine crops aod favorable barvests which they have had in Eng land, France, the Netherlands, aud Germany have superseded the auticipated opening fir exports of flour, dc, to those populous coua tries. They will not require an;thing in this line fr.m the Uniied States—they may poss bly Ye able to, export a little to us should New York prices at any time justify the cost of transportation and the duty. Next, there is probably a surplus of twelve or fifteen millions of bu-hels of wheat in the Canadas, awa ting tbe consummation of the reciprocity treaty, within striking distance of the northern extre- mity of our Erie canal. Then, again, they have had « tremendous wheat crop in California tho golden fields of that wonderful country produc- mg, in some instances, from fifty to sixty bushele to the acre. California, this year, is in fact an exporting State of breadstuffs, and will be enabled to make a handsome profit from shipments to the suffering people of Western Mexico. In a word, from all the lights before vg, there is not the slightest ground for alarm of famine prices for breadstufis and provisions in consequence of the late general drought. We would, however, in embracing this occasion to extend our thanks to all tho: gentiemen who have responded to our call in the premises, advise our readers in all quarters of tHe eountry that any further informstion which they may think fit to communicate to this office, concern. ing the drought and the crops of their respective localities, will be yet available for the general benefit of all classes and sections of the Union. We desire, especially, to hear from Indiana, Michigan, Llinois, Missouri, Wis- consin, Minnesota, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and the coast line of Southern Stater, extending from Albemarle Sound to tue Rio Grande. From several sources we are in umly expectation of minute and official re- ports of the crops, and their aggregate returns for the year, but we would not have this det or any intelligent farmer, of any State, frow rendering in the result: of his observations ani ostimates, Au aspiring youth in the household service of King George the Third, complained to his M-jesty one day of the smallness of his com. pensation for his services. “What do you get?” asked the king. “ Nothing but my victuals and clothes.” “That.” replied the old fogy, “is all T get.” And with the sovereign An can people, also, the first and last considerati is their “victuals and clothes.” We trust, therefore, that our farmers and planters, in ai) quarters of the Union, will fill up the breaks in our correspondence touching the year’s retnras «f our home supplies of breadstuifs and pro visions, and of cotton, that universal article of clothing, and our great staple of exportatiou. a vote of 14to4 ive hundred extra 6:11 —Sweepsta? ¢¢,,8100, mile heats, in harns:s. gala Saye Dav.
