[From the Philadelphia Bulletin, August 28 } Edward, alias Peter Crawford, better kaown as the Irieh Nigger, was taken before Mayor Conrad this morniag, on the charge of killing Francis Taum- bison, @ colored man, about seventeen years ago. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET, Tumspay, August 209—6 P. M. Quite an improvement in Erie Income and Convertibie bonds was realized at the first board to-day. Only a few small lots were sold }linois Central Bonés were in ac- tive demani, and prices fluctuated consideratly. But for the amount of these bonds pressing on the market, much higher rates would rule. They closed at an im- provement. Nicaragua Transit has been buoyant within the past day or two. but the advance has not brought out much stock. There are pumors of av arrangement with the Vanderbilt line, via Panama, but we believe nothing hae been definitely determined on. Erie Railroad stook is heavy at our quotations. The Harlem Company have oply received abgut sixty thousand dollars per annum from the New Haven Company, for not only the use of about twenty miles of road, but for an immense amount of labor. The useof the road alone is worth more than double what the New Haven Company pay, and in any new contract made the Harlem Company will derive some benefit from it. It would be better for the Harlem Com- pany to shut off the New Haven Iccomotives altogether, and not let them come below Williams’ Bridge. The Harlem Company could thus do all the business below that point, the New Haven Company psying so much for, each passenger taken from or brought to their cars. This isthe system adopted by the New Englard com- panies, and if the Harlem Company would adopt it, our streets would be relieved of a’ leas: one half of the long cars, which now interfere so much with the city travel. The New Haven Company have for years used the Har- Jem Company’s road, and have paid almost nothing for it. The rie Railroad Company have offered to mortgage to Mr. Vanderbilt, or any other man or st of men, the entire rolling property of the concern for their endorse- ment on sia hundred thousand dolisrs of the company’s paper, for the purpose of raising the money to. pay off the September interest on its bonds and that portion of the floating debt which is et present most troublesome. This offer has not yet been accepted, and nothing in rela- tion to the financial difficul'ies of the company has been Consummated. We doubt very much if Mr. Vanderbilt, or any other shrewd es pitalist, would take such secarity for such @ large sami, as the cars and locomotives would be useless anywhere else than on the Erie road. It fol- lows, as sure as day follows night, that whoever takes ruch @ mortgage would have to take the property. Mr. Venderbilt would be as good a man to take itasany otber we know of, for le cocld drive a pretty sharp bargain with the holders of the let mortgaze bonds, wh? ultimately will have to operate the road. Mr. Vander- Ut bee been called uyon for aid after every mem- ber of the board of directors, except Mr. Drew, declined to come unler any further responsibilit-, and if he backs out we really do not know what will be come of the once magnificent Erie Railroad Compiny. Where sre all the great financiers who used to congre- gate ip the director's room of this huge concern, and pat forth their edicts with all the pomposity of the Grand Mogul? Where are they now? We do not see them striding about the streets, annihilating all the little dears by @ look. Verily, their ocoupation is gone, and they have given place to a set ofjhungry creditors, who are anxious to get a portion of their claims before the substance is all swept away by some new Shylock. It is seen that their revenues from earnings have been Jargely overrated. It appears that the estimate for July was for $660,000, whereas the actual income amounted to only $414,444 35, showing a differesce of $135,556, This is the reason, doubtless, why some of the directors back- ed cut, and it is reason enowgh. We shail all of us soon be behind the scenes,{when we shall see the rough and rotten machinery which has solong moved this ponde- rous pile of liabilities.
