We noticed briefly yesterday the fir at Nos. 68 and 70 Pino street, occupied by J. Ripley & Cameron, wool deal- ers, which took place on Saturcay afternoon. then we have learned further particulars. It seems that not more than twenty minutes previous to tho of the fire the porters had been up in the fourth loft, eol- lecting some samples, and had left the promises for their other store in Greenwich street. Mr. Cameron was about leaving the store, when some person in tho streot drew his attention to the smoke issuing out of the fourth story window. Mr. Cameron immediately ran up stairs, and from the third floor ko discovered the flames in the uprer loft, and the smoke was too denee to allow him to the loft of building 68 to the loft of 70, and the two, by tho time the Gremen arrived, were both in flames. These two lofts coatained principally flecces, and some sa- os of cotton, estimated to be worth some $8,000 or 10,000, all of which is considerably damaged, if not a totallors. The fire did not extend below the fourth loft. It was admirably extinguished by the firemon, The firm was insuzed on their stock to the amount of about $50,000. ‘They had $10,000 in the Howard Insurance Company, $10,000 in the Home, $5,000 in the Long Isla J, $7,000 in tho Hanover, $10,000 in tho Clinton, $5,600 in tbe Williamaburg City, and $10,000 in the Con tinental- As yet It has not been ascertained how the fire origi- nated. On Sunday morning, between and 10 o’elock, a fire was aiscovered in the provision store, No.17 Vrontetreet, occupicd by Randell Mc Donald. At first, the smoke was supposed to be only the ordioary issue from the smoke house, Tho alarm was given, and one of the assistant engineers, on entering the store, dliscoverod fame in one of the smoke houses not of the store, A stream of water was ordered in, and the fire was very soon oxtinguished. ‘The fire appears to have originated in consequence of too large a fie havirg been made under the smoke house, with dry hickory wood. ‘The wood used for smoking pur- poses should be green, in order to prevent it from blaz- ing.
