FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. ‘Twonspay, June 20—6 P. M. ‘Whe variations in quotations for fancy stocks at the zet board to-day were somewhat larger than usual. ‘he advance in some was very decided, while in others ‘Me decline was equally #0. Ilinois Central Bonds ad- wanced X per cent; Delaware and Hudson, 1; Nisaragus , ‘Bransit, <; Cumberland Coal, %; New York Central Bailrood, %; Erie Railroad, %; Reading Railroad, %; ‘Hiudson Railroad, {. New Jersey Zime declined per gent; New Haven Railroad, 2};; Michigan Southern Rail- poed, 13; Northern Indiana Railroad, 2. ‘The Western allroad stocks are depreciating in market value more wepidly than we anticipated. We predicted a decline in the value of these securities, but must confess it has ‘taken place sooner, and to ® greater extent, than ex- pected. They have been, from the start, too much in- Gated, and the inflation has been sustained by artificial means entirely. By the payment of large dividends, Taken principally from their capitals, these com- panies bave been able to keep up their stocks md give them a good distribution. Most of ‘hem have been in the market up to this ime, negociating loans, and it was therefore necessary ‘to keep up their credit, which could not have been done more effectually than by paying heavy dividends. All the Deading railroad companies are still inwant of money, end their wants are not likely to ever cease. They have wsaieod all they could on direct loans, and are now forced ‘te keep their earnings and pay dividends in stock. This # the great difficulty. Thia continual increase of ca- pital is the cause of most of the depreciation in the market value of this kind of stock, and the time is not @er distant when the different companies will be un- ‘able to earn on an average three per cent per annum on their capitals. Many of them do not do much more thao fat now; with them the future is void of hope. Very fow ot the stocks of the Western railroad companies are mow at par, avd it will not be long before they all rule Delow that point. Those now selling above par are sus- ‘tained by fictitious means, ond as soon as that necessity eases, the stock must run rapidly down. We cannot make a single exception. The depreciation must be univer- ‘m}, and to some considerable extent. There is nota single ‘wad monopolizing any important section of country, which enables it to earn a large revenue, that can prevent for any length of time the construction of some competitor goad, which will, in dividing the business, make both'un- productive. There is no limit to this fatal influence. ‘We have it now in full operation in every part of New England, in New York, and in Ohio, and it i» rapidly spreading over the whole face of the country. It is a Blight upon this great interest, whatever it appears, and the only good derived from it is the reduced rates of sravel and transportation it brings about. Railroads will in all probability be as poor investments a few years Jeence as turnpikes are now. They will pass through the mame phases, and ultimately become as unproduc- Yiye to the stockholders. It is hardly possible to provide a substitute for railroads. They are without doubt perfect as a mode of transit, both for passengers and freight, and ali the lines constructed will no doubt be actively operated, if not for the benefit of stockholders wor bondholders, at all events for the benefit of the people atlarge. Stock investments of all kinds are more or less reearious, but in our opinion railroads are as much so ‘as any other on the list. They are subjected to so many ‘eontingencies, in the way of accidents, damages, &c., & , hat ‘those who depend upon their dividends for the smeans of living, frequently find themselves in embar- wassed circumstances. The New Haven Railroad is a con- @irmation of the truth of this statement. Three divi- ends have been passed in consequence of the Norwalk accident, and not a single train leaves the depot of any sompany without the possibility of something occurring to it that will wipe ont, in a moment, the next semi-an- wual dividend, and perhaps two or three more with it. After the adjournment of the board, the following pales of stocks were made at auction by A. H. Nicolay:— $600 Watertown, N. Y., Water Stock 7’, int. added.. 93 20,000 Toledo, Nor. & Clev RR, lst mortgage, do. 88 ch shares Grocers’ Steam Sugar Co. 100 do. Atlantic and Pacific RR.. 200 do. Hampshire Coal and Iron Co. ‘of Md, At the second board the market was not as buoyant, and clesed with a downward tendency. Erie fell off 3 per cent; New York Central Railroad, 3;; Reading Rail- zoad, }. Nicaragua advanced 1; Cumberland, 4. Tue Bauk of Commerce has declared a semi-annual A@ividend of four per cent; the Williamsburg City Fire Insurance Company, six per cent; the Panama Railroad, three and s half per cent, (the interest on the bonds ot ‘he company due July 1 will be paid on that day, at the office of the company in this city;) the United States In- wurance Company, eight per cent; the New England ‘Worsted Company, one dollar per share on the old, and ‘wo dollars per share on the new stock; the Rome Ex- ebange Bunk, five per cont; the Bank of the Metropolis, ‘Washington City, tour percent. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of Tho United States for the port of New York, this day— June 2—were $110,170; the payments amounted to $108,664 17—Ieaving a balance on hand of $8,984,925 62. ‘The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, Washington, on Tuesday, the 27th inst., were:— ¥or the redemption of stocks....... For the payment of other treasury Wor the customs ..... For the War Department. For re. paying for the War Department, For the Navy Department....... For re paying for the Navy Department For the Interior Department... "The returvs for the last three days in June will sow very large redemption of government stocks. Tho Legislature of Connecticut has passed a now bank Dill, which is intended to restrict the practice herctofor so prevalent, on the part of the banks of that state, & Jouning their bills to parties for cireulation in the West- ern Btates. The following are its provisions :-— fection 1 provides, that after October 1 no bank shall Gireetly or indirectly pay more than four per cont for the Joan of money borrowed within the State or on deposit. ” 2. Banking associations formed under the act of 1862 are Prohibited taking » greater. rate of interest or di n incorporated banks are authorized to do. The penalty for each vi ation of the provisions of the act is not leas than $500—— to be recovered ona suit by the State attorneys in the different counties. The increase of capital consists of $9,300 addition k the Blaehstone Bank, 625,000 to that of the Urocers’ Be nk, end $11,084 to that of the National, he receipts of the Dorion aud bitenburg Relieoad (x Jor Moy, J mounted to $59,0% # as against $52,666 89 for the same month last year, showing an increase of $7,043 43. The recetpts of the finished portion of the Covington and Lexington Railroad, (65 miles from Covingtos to Cynthiana,) are now $600 per day. Itis expected that ‘the daily receipts will reach $1,000 when completed to Paris, which will be by the ist of August next, from whioh latter point to Lexington the line is already com- pleted and in operation. The Little Schuylkill road wil be opened by the. 4th of July, thus completing the line vo Philadelphia. The road from Catawissa westward to Williamsport, and | thence to Almira, will be opened about the same time. This completes the connection between the PhiladelpLia and the Erie road, and by the Canandaigua and Niagara Falls road with Canada. ‘The earnings of the Peru, Indianapolis and Madison Railroad Company for May, were $38,000, sgainst $26,000 in May last year. For the five months ending May 31, they were $137,053. The net earnings of: the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad Company for the year ending the 30th of June, | 1864, are equal to nine per cent on the eapital stock of | the company. The Board of Directors have declared a dividend of four per cent for the last six months, paya- ble at the office of the company at Indianapolis on the 25th of July next. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company gives notice that the drawbacks allowed by resolution of the 15th of Mareh last, upon tolls on the Lehigh Canal upon coal reaching tide, will be discontinued on and after the 3d proximo. The movements of ail the coal carrying compa- nies indicate the important fact to themselves ef as much business as they can do at high prices, and the equal'y interesting fact to the public that the prico of coal is not likely to be lower this year than it is at the present time. The Boston Journal faye: — Mining stocks are geverally very dull, but there was a slight improvement to-day in Copper Falls and Toltec, both advaneing 4 over prices of yesterday, and closing quite firm While the whoie market is under such de- pressing influences, from the unsettled state of foreign affairs, and from the unusual money stringency, we can- not expect to witness any marked improvement in copper stocks more than in other fancies; but during the whole pried of the downward movements, dating back some four montbs, it is a remarkable fact that the mines them- selves have been worked with unabated confidence, and those who have the best sources of information 5 in more encouraging terms than ever of their prospects as to eventual success, We this is remarkable, be- cavse it would not baye been surprising m times like these if some weak spots had appeared in s0 many new concerns; but so faras we are informed, the mines of nearly every company in the Lake Superior region organ- ized within the last two or three years, are operated a8 vigorously and as perseveringly as at the commence- ment. This indicates at least a strong degree of confi- dence on the part of those iaterested. Stock Exchange.
