ee SEARS CA cA AAI FINANCIAL AND COMMEP. cy AQ, | Common vr rm Poar or New Yous—Wamty Bron \ ——eeeee MONEY MARV. gr. SconQay, June 11—6 P. M. During the past week the stock market has not been @t all Weoyant. Railroad stocks have been steadily | gettting down, and al! speculation in them has disap- | peared. The bears have not been able to put oat con- | Tracts upon satisfactory terms, in consequence of the abeonce of buyers, and that class of securities is fast | Josing favor with speculators. There has for several years past been so much fnanciering in railroad bonds ‘and other evidences of indebtedness, that capitalists are sompletely disgusted, and show a disposition to abandon them altogether, and turn their atteution more to incor- porated companies, deriving their revenue from diferent sources. Competition in railroads is rapidly increasing, which, with the steady increase im cost, must ultimately | make them less productive, an‘ consequently less desir- able investments. The developements recently made ia Parker Vein coal stock are enough to deter outsiders from touching anything of that kind again; but fortunately | that company is, we believe, the exception, and | not the rule. It has been known for a long | time that the most desperate, ruinous financlering has eon practised in its management, and purchasers of the wtock have not been ignorant of the fact. Holders are mow waiting the movement of the new board of direc- tors, and no time should be lost in making public the actual condition of the company. We want the whole ntory—no patching up—that those interested may see what sort of « management the company has been under mince its organization. The difference between good and bed management is clearly illustrated in the Parker Vein Goal Company on one side and the Cumberland on the ether. While the first hes run down almost out of aight, ‘he other has been steadily advancing, and must soon weach higher points. Since the recent election of dires- tora for the ensuing year, the President of the company has put forth the following report. It ie brief and te the int -— a Orrrce oF CUMBERLAND Coat Co, Jone 5, 1854. To THE STOCKHOLDERS :—Since | aseumed the active du- ties of President of this company, Ihave made a state- ment of its financial condition, with a brief inventory of its working material, which is annexed, and have only to ‘add that Its position 'is materially strengthened, and its resources inereared frow actual business. ‘The business of the season opened flatteringly, with » pressing demand for our fuel at satisfactory profits. In the month of May, we brought to market 28,604 tons of coal, which is the Jargest month’s work yet done by this Com pony, and an increase of more than 11,000 tons, or sev: ‘enty per cent., over the corresponding month of last year. I shall rapidly increase this quantity; and may re- mark that, with the addition of a single locomotive and twelve iron cars, which are ordered, this Company will Be evabled, without any additional outlay, to mine and good to market irom 2, 800 ape tons per day, a0 soon ge the public works of Maryland, now being en! shall be perfected. er itcaaiee Tanticipate the period when the market will require ‘at amount from this Company. About two-thirds of ‘the coal has been trans) in the Company's vessels Quant. —— bbls... 960 and we have realized fair profits, not oaly on the coal, ‘dat on the transportation also. But the results I shall present at the semi-annual meeting will be more appro- priste and satiafactory. ‘The advantages possessed by this Company in owning Ate vessels and barges, enable it to fill orders with prompt- seas, and place it above dependence on transient vessels. ‘There is an increased energy in the management of ‘the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal—the result of an enlarging trade—which must prove highly beneficial to our inter- ests, and the interests of the coal-tield of Mar, Sach is the magnitude of onr enterprise that aides taken more time than was anticipated to complete the plans of its projectors. This delay has created disap- pointment; but a large proportion of our stockhoklers— ‘the early and earnest frieuds of the company—assured of the intrinsic value of its property and the certainty of ite developement, bave never been disheartened, In regretting the loss of time, we roust bear in mind that eur works are now complete, and tbat, nnlike other companies, our business may annually be largely in- ereased without corresponding expenditure. The wicdom of the proiectors of this enterprise is now rept, in thus anticipating the wants of the company, providing for the largest increased demand ever made upon one coal district. Various applications have been made for the privil ef mining coal from our lands on a rarely, which woul a at the rate of not less than 89, per acre for e great vein alone. Ihave felt it at duty to decline ‘these propositions, as realizing leas than the actual ‘value of the property. In view of the large coal estate ef the company, it may be advisable hi reaiter, on satis- Sactory terms, fo adopt this method of increasing ite revenue. This company i ig now earning a diyidond on its capital wtock, and no doubt exists as to its future Lag as ats. ‘All of which is respectfully subm by order of the stockholders. ANDREW MEHA President.
