FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MOWEY MARKET. Faupay, May 26—6 P. M. ‘There was very active stock market this morning. ‘The bulls and dears have at last succeeded in getting up @ little excitement, and an extensive movement, in one of The leading fancies. Cumberland is #till the favorite, and ‘The bears begin to find the current setting against them ‘teo strong. There has been » great many purchases within a day or two past by the shorts, for delivery, and @large amount of stock has been withdrawn from the market. Erie Railroad has been quite active, but with a very different result. Reading Railroad and Nicaragua ransit have been in demand, but we have no particular ehange to report in market value. At the first board to- ay, Minois Central bonds advanced ¢ per cont; Nicara_ gua Transit, 4; Cumberland Coal, 3¢. Erie Railroad de- lined 4 por cent; Harlem, 4g. Theadvance and activity jo Cumberland have become more permanent than was geverally anticipated. The contest going on between the 4wo great parties has assumed a character and importance Mittle dreamed of, and it becomes the shorts to be wary, and look clotely to the result. In the face of the recent rapid advance, sellers continue plenty and put out contracts freely. There are invariably two sides to every question; and as we have heretofore given our ideas of the rise and progress of the movement going on, and attributed the eause of the improvement in prices to a successful cor- mer arranged bya clique of speculators, we now give a statement which has been furnished us by a party pret- ty well posted up about the company’s affairs, showing fhe probable result of the operationsin mining and ‘wansporting coal during the present seayon. We give it go as to post all parties interested up as thoroughly as possible, that both buyers and sellers may act under- standingly. If there is ground work to inflate prices upon, and the inflation is likely to be permanent, the Dears want to know it; and if the stock is a good pur- hase at present prices, the public generally want to know it; and so far as we are concerned we want to give alla fair chance, either to get into a good thing or to get out and keep out of a bad one. We give the annex- ed statement for just what it is worth, as a partial esti- mate, believing the data to be good:— Esnaarep Ner Eagnines oy tre Cumperianp Coat Com- PANY, 1864, ‘eld at Paltimore, previous to increase in price of coal, 91,000 tons, the actual profit on which $109,541 was. Fotimated profit to the ‘company, in transporting two-thirch of the above quantity......... $239,541 Since the present increase in price, the compan: have sold at Baltimore and Alexandria, 10, 8, at a profit of. 5 ted profit to the company In transporting two thirds of that quantity ........4 Ganndeensis Abi06 $269,041 200,000 tons, estimated product for the balance bes" the year, sold at present prices, will yield a profit of agente Profit on transportation by the ‘company ‘of two- MMR gehts ease seiens hese reac seve vees 287,000 epdenesa eee «$878,941 deduct 25 cents per ton on 200,000 tons. acdvieus Sages seseyeens1O/O00! $808,941 Interest on bonds $527,000 at 6 per cent $32,220 Dividend on capital $6,000,000 at 10 do,.500,000 Surplus January, 1855. . edie doang@@Tlial 2,822 shares of its own stock, the par value of which is $282,220, which, of course, cannot eee ate in the profits. "The above estimate is believed Bee correct, as 100,000 tons have already been sold, and the company’ expect to get out 300,000 tons. If they get out only 200,000 tons, or 100,000 tons more than is now bold, the result is only less the surplas. It wust be admitted that this is a very favorable exhibit, ‘and if realized will be most extraordinary. It is very easy to put figures on paper.and to show results that would make @ bear stand aghast, but it is another thing to show the reality. We have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the above calculation, and trust every item will be largely exceeded. We are informed that eighteen thousand shares of the stock of the Cumberland Company are held by original subscribers, and that purchases recently made have been on account of some of our largest and shrewd- nt capitali This shows their confidence; but we have known even our shrewdist capitalists so often mistaken, that their opinion would not have much weight with us. These capita generally, come in at a low stage ef prices, ond sell out at a moderate advance, Small Buyers are (he best, and any stock widely distrbuted is in a strong position. in view of the movements going on tm Cumberland, it would be wise for the bears to work out o it at the earliest possible moment. They have,we fear, c rnered themselves, and the first loss will be found the best. We shell look into this matter deeper, and analyze it more closely. At the adjournment of the Board, the following sales of stocks were made at auction by Simeon Draper:— $4,000 T $2,000 Canandaigua and } 7000 Great Western Railr v.10, (Ill) 100 shares City of Cairo stock, (Ill.). The warrants entered on the books of the Treasury De- partment, at Washington, on Wednesday, the 24th of May, were:— For the re’emption of stocks ......... For the payment of other Treasury debts. In mo case, however, is there being any profit, realized adequate to cost and trouble of preparing for the spring’s business, or to the expectations of the least sangaine importers, This is, doubtless, owing to the backwardness of the trade, which, added to the over-importation, and the ac cumulation of unpopular or inferior supplies, under- minded the confidence of facters, who, in their anxiety, pressed their goods upon the market and reduced their prices with such precipitancy, as to induce purchasers to act with caution and reserve, in the hope of being able to secure, later in the season, stocks on still more accom- modating terms. Hence the inordinate dulness and langor of the traffic at present, which features appertain more closely to the business in Contmental than in British goods, thongh in neither case are there any en- couraging symptoms. We learn from an article in the Western Railroad Reeord, that there are in Obio,at this time, 1,707 4 miles ot railroads completed in whole or in part, of which 357 miles have been opened since the Ist of Novembor last, These roads, when finished, will make 2,200 miles of completed railway, independent of double tracks. ‘The following roads are in progress, vis.:—Cincinnati and Marietta, 260 miles; Cincinnati and Dayton Short Line, 5244 miles; Cincinnati, Xenia and Cleveland Short Line, 2:0 miles; Clinton Line, between Tiffin and Pennsylvania State line; Tiffin and Fort Wayne, a prolongation of the Clinton Line; Pittsburg and Cincinnati Railroad, via Me- Connelsville. These comprehend about 600 miles, and will swell the aggregate to 2,800 miles. From a review of the receipts of these roads for 1858, it appears:— 1. That the aggregate cost of the roads is $20,105,787. 2. That the net receipts were 8% per cent on the entire cost. 8. That the net receipts are about 50 percent of the gross receipts. The present aggregate market value of the stocks of these roads is $18,986,000. This shows a market depre- ciation of $1,219,000, and at that the rate of interest paid by the net receipts is 93¢ per cent.
