The Sloo amendment, if introduced, will kill the treaty. That is an ascertained | fact, as more than six Senators who voted for the ratifl- cation will change their votes, should it be engrafted in the treaty. A large moneyed interest is brought to bear in the Stoo matter, and this accounts for the statements sent from here, that if it is recognized the treaty will pass. Depend upon it, the reverse is the fact. VETO OF THE INDIGENT ANE LAND BILL—DEATH OF AN EDITOR. Deak Sin—It is but a few months ago since in the edi- torial columns of your journal you denied the truth of the statement that the Spanish government in Cuba were about to introduce the appienticeship system in that island, and asserted that such statement was simply one of the modes through which ‘he Cuban Junta atiempied to create excitement in the popular mind of the countr: Nevertheless, to convince you that such a report was aly solutely well founded, I have the pleasure of forwarding to you herewith a copy of the Gaceta de la Habana, of the 21th inst., containing an authorized list of the dis- tribution of some six hundred apprentices, from which | you will see shat the colonial government of Cuba has initiated the system in all its villany. This afternoon, at three o'clock, the procession —composed of the church, the military and the people— passed through the principal streets, carrying lifo-sizo | representations of the dead Saviour, of the Virgin Mary, the Aposties, with banners, flags and church parapher- nalia, decorated most profusely and untastefully with tinsel ornaments. Profound quiet will reign until 10 o'clock to-morrow | morning, and then‘ to make upfor lost time, as well as to indicate great joy for the ascent to heaven—the most infernal din and noise ever heard begins—zans are fired, horns blowed, drams beat, bells that are sound and ro cracked (and the cracked ones are largely jority,) are—not rung—but hammored and pounded until they send forth such piteous pests Tordant sounds that would drive the “old Internal” self beyond the city gates, were he not so firmly and a0- curely domi led behind the altars in certain large e¢ uring this confusion. | Daring these rel during military, are attentive to to last these Sabbaths a sufficient through the remainder of the Even the interest previ States news has abated within the past two days: but still there is confidence expressed that the administration will act decisively and promptly upon the retura of the Madrid messenger. No one for a moment doubts the tion of the Spanish government, and the reply they will return, and no one doubts that if the administration fails to perform their promises, that the people wit! take their use in their own bands, maintain their rights, and vin- dicate American honor. President Pierce undoubtedly has been governed in his course by the combined wisdom of the Cabinet, and he has calculated to surprise the American people by a purchase of the Island of Cuba—relying upon the sagncity of M. Soule and the bubbling of the political eaaldron at Madrid. Let him at once dispel these hopes. Spain has no desire to sell, and she will only Inve him on from day to day to gain time to consummate her plans for the de- struction of the island under the secret English ¢ Even though Spain does apologize for the Black W: insult, will the United States permit this interference of Great Briiain and the establishment of a free black colony close upon her southern border for the ultimate destrac- tion and annoyance of Southern interests?
